It's up to you guys to post the international numbers as they come in or are updated, and then I'll update the first post.

I also believe I'm missing some release dates, so let me know and I'll add them. Basically... post your knowledge, and I'll input it! :)

So it will pass The Eight Hundred eventually, but probably not by the end of the year without Chinese money? Hopefully the history books will give it the W anyways!

“#1 movie of year X” will usually mean release year rather than calendar gross.

Japan will most likely go around ¥36Bn i.e. $343mn Approx.

Taiwan is looking at $20mn range.
Hong Kong perhaps $7mn.

These 3 will give it $370mn / ¥38.6Bn.

That leaves about $83mn for taking the top spot of 2020 and about ¥9Bn for beating Spirited Away for Biggest Japanese film worldwide, roughly same amount for both benchmark.

Your Name did around $140mn, outside these three but that had a very big Korea and China ($109mn to be precise).

Taiwan numbers suggest a big China for Demon Slayer, but a Chinese expert said he is expecting $30-40mn, so I will hold my horse. Will depend a lot on Korea.

I though Your Name was the highest grossing japanese movie worldwide with 358m? Or are all the news wrong.

Also I believe it should make a pretty big number in China. It is by far the most popular anime on Bilibili. Its constantly on the front page and this is a must watch movie for anyone who wants to continue the story. In addition when the movie opened they did a promotion for the movie which included japanese, english and chinese voice actors for Tanjiro.

Yes, remember that the movie is a continuation of the story where season one of the anime concluded last year. It's not an original story that can be seen by non-anime viewers and/or non-manga readers. I mean, sure, someone could go see it blind, but they'd be massively confused I'd imagine.

I updated the first post with all the release dates and/or countries where it's been announced for. Let me know if I missed any. Also, no South Korea announcement? I thought I read it was playing there "soon" because of some controversy about them censoring Tanjiro's hanafuda earrings.

I don't really want to go around looking for new totals in all the markets it's playing in now every day, so I'll probably just update the total every Monday/Tuesday. However, if you guys post the most recent daily totals for the countries, I'll update the first post as they come in.

At end of last week,

Taiwan: Another great week. NT$99mn only down 31%, taking the total to NT$409mn or $14.3mn. 40% drops from here leads to NT$558mn or $19.5mn Approx, which will be straight out historic. A slightly better 35% holds will lead it to NT$592mn or $20.7mn, making it 15th highest grosser of all time beating Life of Pi.

Hong Kong: HK$18.35mn or $2.37mn Approx till Thursday. Okay performance so far but 2nd weekend drops aren't looking great. May be $5mn full run.

The worldwide gross will be $248.5-249mn with subject to estimates in Singapore.

That's rather unfortunate. Do PG13/R films often get rejected by them? I remember way back that it was often an issue, but just figured they'd moved a little past that in the last decade. Does China itself not produce PG13/R equivalent films?

So it is not getting released in China now? Or it would get later or they would censor it

No China release is super fucking lame.

Their random censorship must be frustrating for audiences.

Agreed given the popularity of the anime they could have easily decided to give it a higher rating like they did in Singapore and still release it for mature audience but then again they "think" animation is only for younger audience.
