Thank you Charlie.

It's amazing that a non-American anime film can reach $500 million without the release in mainland China these days. Even Hollywood blockbuster movies still heavily rely on that market.

Has anyone mentioned that DS (2,068,163 admissions) passed SOUL (2,047,878) and is now the biggest movie of the year in SK?

Not yet! I think it was said before that DS passed Soul's gross in SK but not in admissions

According to Kobiz, it's passed Soul in admissions as well.

Honestly, I wouldn't count on it keeping that title for long. Fast 9 is already a contender, and I'm sure there will be others.
Still, pretty cool

Is there something I'm missing about why Demon Slayer jumped over 100% from last Saturday despite The Conjuring 2 and F9 and Cruella all being in theaters?

From Deadline

"And, we are hearing that Demon Slayer – Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train has indeed passed the $500M global mark, but are still waiting on those pesky official figures to attribute a precise number. The Sony Pictures Releasing International cume is $3.1M of the total, hailing from 719 screens in two markets. In Russia, Demon Slayer ranks as the highest grossing anime film ever and the top Japanese production with $1.7M."

From Forbes

"Demon Slayer, which has passed $500 million worldwide in exchange-rate-adjusted global grosses and remains by far the biggest global earner of 2020, will have $47.7 million tomorrow."

I don't know if it will ever go wide - it's been on 21 screens in its third weekend. Every week in June a couple more theaters will open, but all the major theater chains and most other theaters will re-open July 1st - and the distributors have slated 20 movies (!) to open on July 1st...

Funimation is streaming the movie starting the same day as the digital release. Seems like iQiYI at least is also streaming it for free in Southeast Asia.

Now with the physical home release in Japan this week and digital release around the world next week, the only record, which Mugen Train is unable to achieve, is from the mainland China market.

Well, at least, the movie accomplished its tasks to become the first non-American highest grossing movie in a year after a century.

I'm a bit satisfied Japan managed to snatch that achievement away from China at the last sec. Feels right after decades of being the strongest foreign market (China will have its chance again in the future, I'm sure).

Honestly it's not impossible that nothing this year tops Hi, Mom's $841 million worldwide total (ETA: wait, Spider-Man 3.5 probably will, n/m).

Yeah Chinese movies have a big handicap that they don't do anything outside domestic BO but that will eventually change and they start getting ahead of American movies in WW total.
