I think that all the current releases should go to home media soon, but holding Trolls would have been a smart idea, it didn't need to go on demand.

Holy shit. God knows if there’s any going back to traditional windows after this.

Eek.

If they manage to make a profit with Trolls this way this could be a game changer but I guess we'll see how it is in the middle of April. I don't even think theaters will be open by that time.

Yeah Trolls didn't need to do this.

And as much as I'm dying to see Promising Young Woman I really hope it doesn't do this. It's Universal though so they might. I'd rather they move it to later in the year. Maybe release it in December with the same date as Bombshell. Then hopefully Carey Mulligan could get some awards love.

Oh so its a $20 rental. Ok, yeah, not gonna do that lol unless they do it for something really big in the near future.

I mean, I'll rent Trolls for $20, that's cheaper than going to the theater for 3 people.

Invisible Man would cost $20 if it were due to be released this week so this pricing is fine. I just wish we could get a better deal on digital rentals.

Edit didn’t realize it was $20. That sucks.

This is a smart move given the situation. This will definitely be a pathway for studios to test the home media option and shrinking release windows. It has already happened in India due to piracy, so I guess it was inevitable. This virus is going to kill box office in the long run.

Unfortunately this accelerates the demise of the theatrical experience to an extent.

It probably fits in with how we generally watch films - blockbusters within the 1st 2-3 weeks and smaller arthouse/awards films may hang around art house theatres (if they survive) a bit longer to catch somewhere down the line.

But sad nevertheless.

Birds of Prey and Gentlemen will also be available this Friday but to buy (at least according to Fandango)

At least The Gentlemen had a good run. Actually Birds had the time for a decent run but unfortunately failed prior to all this mess.

I wonder when we will see the first movie without a theatrical release on VOD.

It's gonna be Trolls. AMC just announced they're closing.

Well shit. I got to see that one before they pull it out of theaters here too

$20 for a group of 4+ is good value. 1-2 probably isn’t and 3 is borderline.

Which is where the price point should be in this model in the future. Attract the big groups of people who probably weren’t going to the theater anyways but would consider this. Make it high enough that solo or couples would still be incentivized to go to theater.

Making a movie VOD means it will be pirated and will kill many going to the theater to see it. Honestly the way things have been is the best way. And eventually things will go back to normal hopefully. No need for these higher priced movie rentals. Right now that's fine and a good idea but once things reopen this should absolutely stop.

That being said they should do this with My Spy. That won't be a big enough hit at the box office anyway. Antlers would be another good one.

GOOD MOVE FOR STUDIOS! BAD FOR THEATERS!

Most films after their first two weeks don’t make that much. Piracy effect is minimal on BO by then.

I guess the concern would be that if a pirate knows he can get it a few weeks from now, he won’t see it in theatres the opening weekend. Same argument against sending things to streaming after 2-3 weeks if you create the expectation that you just have to wait for it.

I think that the desire people will have to get out in a month or two when things reopen will be plenty to offset anyone who's like "wow, it was so convenient to watch new movies at home! Let's never go to a theater again!"

The trend will be for blockbuster movies to stay longer in cineplexes (6-8 weeks wide). Smaller/indie releases will get a two-week engagement to test for WOM. Theaters won't survive playing only "arthouse" movies any more except in big cities.

1-2 month shutdowns mean even June and July releases are in jeopardy.

Another month or so and this will become routine unless government forces on closure. It seemed that people got relaxed on the virus thing here in Singapore and were trying to go back to old lifestyle, then the number of cases increased last three days here and there are government notices for shutdowns for shops and malls now.

Add The Way Back though it will be available to buy instead of rent. Good for them. I hope the other studios do the same. Everything should be released other than the blockbusters.
