3/13/20

1. On My Block (series)
2. Spenser Confidential (movie, this was #1 yesterday)
3. Love Is Blind (series)
4. Trials of Gabriel Fernandez (limited series)
5. Dirty Money (series)
6. The Angry Birds 2 (movie)
7. Space Jam (movie)
8. Paradise PD (series)
9. Outbreak (movie)
10. Freaks (movie)

Surprised Outbreak isn't higher. Space Jam obviously works well for families missing basketball.

I hope D+ does this too. Would be fascinating to get more data about the entertainment Americans turn to in times of crisis.

Yeah they started this here last week. It's totally useless for me because Chinese people use Netflix for Korean drama or local content. Hardly any English TV series goes in that list unless they were already popular like Friends or HIMYM. BBT isn't very popular here.

Interesting to see non-fictions like Trials of Gabriel Fernandez and Dirty Money getting high view counts.

Crash Landing on You is probably among the top there, right? HIMYM is quite popular among Hong Kong viewers. Friends, not so much.

Yes Crash Landing on You has been in top 10 for last few days and peaked at #1 a couple of times.

For some reason Life As We Know It (that’s the Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel romcom, not the Angelina Jolie blonde movie) has been in the top ten the last few days.

Blonde Angelina was really cute and the only time she ever pulled off a girl next door look.

On r/netflix there’s some threads tracking it

Sure but

A) You could say the same about Disney and their box office numbers. But we don’t cause it would ruin the illusion.

B) It’s just another form of marketing. They could lie to promote their new material but they don’t have to. Nobody here has gone “Oh I gots to watch these spanish soap operas since they are doing so well on netflix”

C) We aren’t gonna have real box office for awhile and this is the next best thing!

Basically the same today with a little bit of shuffle in bottom half. I thought there would be more variance with everybody staying home.

We really need a genuine Nielsen agency for the streaming platforms. It’s annoying cause that has its own issues but it’s better than just trusting the sources themselves.

Nielson has a system with audio recognition ability in people’s phones basically acting like Nielson boxes. The results look trustworthy, unfortunately they are REALLY slow and inconsistent releasing them.

I still don’t trust that system. They need the providers to buy-in and work with them.

It’s flawed but for the same ways as putting in a Nielson box. Asking someone to put a chip in their phone instead of their TV is not really that different.

A running list I was keeping a while back (views are the first three days):

Bird Box - 26 million
Stranger Things Season 2 - 15.8 million
The Irishman - 13.2 million
Bright - 11 million
El Camino - 6.5 million
Lost in Space Season 1 - 6.3 million
13 Reasons Why Season 2 - 6.1 million
Orange is the New Black Season 6 - 5.3 million
Disenchantment Season 1 - 4.4 million
The Crown Season 2 - 3 million
House of Cards Season 6 - 2.9 million
GLOW Season 2 - 1.3 million

Seems like it passes the sniff test. There was an article that came out where a Netflix exec said it was a battle to the last minute to renew GLOW, admitting that the ratings were bad but they kept it for the reviews. So this would support the above numbers. Back when an independent company (Symphony) came up with the system I noticed they had low numbers for Bloodline and then it then went on to make news by being one of Netflix’s first cancellations, so that made me trust it a bit more.

Well that list needs to be redone. Didn't Murder Mystery do 30 million in it's first weekend.

I can’t find Nielson officially releasing numbers on Murder Mystery, the 30 million number came from Netflix who can’t be trusted. But I would guess it did pretty good.

Agreed I don't believe these Top 10 thought of them as another marketing ploy. There have been numbers here and there but there should be a ratings system in place to measure by now but I guess that won't go well with streaming sites.
