Post The Meg- What Went Right?
It’s Warner Bros. Biggest opening of the year. One of the biggest original horror/thriller openings. And similar films haven’t opened to half as much. And Statham isn’t a draw. And it was dumped in August. And it was sold as a B movie. Why did the Meg open to 44.5m?

I can’t figure it out. And it even had a good multiple! Will almost certainly close over 100m domestic.

I am pretty much flabbergasted. I thought Flav'd was joking when he asked if it was left out of the August poll cause it's going to win

I think people were craving for shark movies given the success of last year's 47 Meters Down. I still don't understand how Meg opened this big. Probably the family support but HUGE opening.

Let's not forget The Shallows from 2016--I thought the success of that one (17/55DOM/119WW) contributed to 47 Meters Down becoming a theatrical release instead Netflix/DTV/whatever.

Absolutely! The Shallows contributed as well.

I'm pretty surprised by it's opening, thought it'd do high teens. Happy for Statham.

A premise with universal appeal. That’s what it comes down to.

Marketing was decent but WB didn’t even release a second trailer so I wouldn’t say it was stellar.

Yes marketing was pretty poor for this. I think there was a chance of bigger opening (like $70m+) if it was marketed well.

Sharks are the ultimate summertime monster. People have been waiting for a non-sequel blockbuster and Skyscraper just wasn't hitting it. August is when audiences want movies that don't take themselves too seriously. It was just a matter of time before Statham fronted a big one. People needed to see what happened to the dog.

It wasn't dumped. It had significant marketing push.

This was promoted heavily all throughout Shark Week. They found their target and hit it hard.

I take back what I said about not releasing a second trailer. WB’s head of marketing said it was very deliberate decision as a second trailer would “only reach 10-15% of the intended audience”. They played this one just right.

Obviously the marketing wasn't poor. If it was, it wouldn't have opened to $44 million.

This is up there for me with Black Panther and A Quiet Place for jaw drop shocks OW this year. The opening day wasn't the most impressive part compared to that Sat. hold on what easily could have been a rush out.

Clearly shows how underutilized August is. It can easily launch big films and audiences clearly responded well.

Everyone who saw the trailer knew it was stupid. People were just in the mood for stupid. Especially with the end of summer looming. It had been several weeks since the last stupid summer movie (Jurassic World 2). This was the last hurrah.

Of course if the legs are atrocious then this is all a moot point.

1. Last big "Summer" Film
2. Appealed to families somehow. The Thursday IMAX 7PM had lots of families.
3. Trailer was cute/hokey/fun

Also, isn't it the ONLY true summer film...as in, beaches, water, excitement, but elevated to blockbuster by a huge fucking shark and a few stars, plus it looks like a hell of a ride.

Seems like people really love shark movies these days. I am just noticing that this is the third time that I have at least severely underestimated one of these movies.

Shark movies are hot and we're a nation content with debt. IMAX ticket price, no problem with that Mastercard.

shark movies as a genre is also underutilized and a few good-to-decent theatrical entries in the past few years made this look even better.

Meg 2 isn't too far out. The first one was surprisingly quite leggy from opening day to its total run with a 3.15 multiplier. Can this pull $200M+ from the good reception of the original and mindless fun it provides? August is also generous for this type of film.
