After "the time after Titanic" and "the time after Avatar" I prepared "the time after Avengers: Endgame".

Out of 40 listed countries, Avengers was already passed in 19 countries, 13x by The Lion King, 4x by Toy Story 4 and once each by Aladdin and a local production...*

http://www.insidekino.com/BO/Avengers.htm

*to be precise: In three countries Avengers was passed by more than one movie...

Honestly crazy to see how many markets in which it's already been surpassed.

Nice, Avatar running the table in Europe / Oceania lol.

If only US / UK had delivered comparably.

Mark, also was wondering are the admissions for US based on ATP or other source?

The percentage lead in admissions over #2 for Demon Slayer in Japan and Avatar in Australia lol (I realize it's probably closer in the latter with 3D surcharge).

Copying Mr. R's post from the politics forum here

Quote:
A few words about Russian movie market.
• All the majors have cut ties with Russia. 2022 box-office was down 42% to 24 billion RUR (but going down since 2019’ 56 B RUR). Last year cinemas struggled due to lack of content, they say about 10% of them were shut down.
• 2022 entire total was passed in 6 months, so far 2023 is +64% with clear untapped demand for bigger hits. It surely is outperforming pre-war 2021’ 41 B RUR.
• Noticeably not enough domestic blockbusters, but in 1-2 years there will be plenty. Family films, animation and comedies currently dominate. Local phenomenon Cheburashka sold 22.3 m tickets Vs Avatar’s record 13.5 m in 2009, more than doubled grosses of the previous Russian record holders. Vyzov (the one filmed in space) has 6.3 m tickets so far and an enormous staying power.
• Since early 2023 they are showing US blockbusters unofficially (but legally, just not paying US companies anymore), masked as Russian shorts, which is <10% of the box-office. Avatar 2 grossed over $20 m, but they say it’s over $50 m with illegal showings.
• There’s still big official releases John Wick 4 (2.4 m tickets), Operation Fortune (1.8 m), Amazing Maurice (1.2 m), The Covenant, Jeanne du Barry, Hypnotic, Plane being the biggest grossers, and a lot of second-rate genre films such as The Black Demon. Last pre-war official US blockbusters were Uncharted (5.4 m tickets) and Death on a Nile (2 m).
• That being said, the market relies on new domestic productions and US/EU films. No re-releases of the previous Russian hits, very few Asian imports (2 Jackie Chan films and some animation).
• Online cinemas rose 5-17% to 63-68 billion RUR in 2022, depending on the source. They would lose most of western hits, but still expect 10-20% growth this year. Local online content (series mostly) is inexpensive and is on the rise. Netflix was 8% of the market, Ukrainian Megogo was 6%, so nobody cared about them leaving. Major TV channels are focused on local content for many years anyway.
• Current trend is that intellectual rights on all Western property will be ignored by the state either officially by law or unofficially. Local torrent Kinozal was unblocked after 8 years (biggest ones are still blocked).
• Biggest local distributor developed its own IMAX format.

Thanks. To add and update,
- online theaters earned 35 B RUR in 6 months, +37% to last year. That's 50% higher than regular theaters
- Kinopoisk leads with 34% market share (up from 23%). The site used to be Russian IMDB basically
- licensing of original content brought 9 B RUR, +50%
- about 50% of major US titles are gone
- original productions rose from 74 films and series in 2021 to 89 in 2022, all platforms plan to multiply their production
- also worth noting that the biggest platforms are owned by huge media and telecom conglomerates, Yandex, Rostelecom, Megafon, MTS, Gazprom Media, VGTRK, so money is not a problem. The problem was competition from Hollywood titles, which is now gone.

I just realised how badly Indy 5 did worldwide. By the end of the year it won't even be in the top 15. It was out-grossed by Meg 2: The Trench, lol. That was unforeseeable before it opened.

And I know Dead Reckoning disappointed but it still saved face internationally, and will make $200m more than Indy 5 worldwide. It is shocking how much Indy 5 failed. To go from $790m to $382m is nosedive/cliff territory.

IJ5 probably suffered from a Matrix 4 type scenario. Such a reviled predecessor that even with a huge amount of time passed couldn't recapture the magic of the original.

130.6M global for Freddy driven by massive openings in Latam.

As they markets get larger and larger, really feel horror could become a very lucrative box office play globally.

From a Google search it looks like these are the top 4 horror films of all time globally.

1 It $701,842,551 2017
2 The Sixth Sense $672,806,292
3 I Am Legend $585,349,010
4 World War Z $540,007,876
5 It Chapter Two $473,093,228

Only 4 movies to do $500M+ worldwide in the genre.

$110M global opening for Marvels.

$455 million global opening for Captain Marvel in 2019 (24.2%)

Global performance is even worse than the overall bad domestic performance.

Even Alice 2 retained 29.2% of Alice 2010's global total. It's looking like Marvels may have even WORSE retention. It really is un unprecedented collapse of a $1B+ predecessor to miss $300M.

Some updates as Mother Russia enters its biggest holiday season.
Box-office is currently up +68% to 2022, and has just passed pre-war 2021 YTD. Biggest hits so far:
1. Cheburashka 22.3 m tickets
2. Wish of the Fairy Fish 8.3 m, and counting. Based on a Russian fairy tale.
3. Vyzov 6.7 m
4. Ladybug & Cat Noir 3.2 m. French animation, official release.
5. Baba Yaga saves the World 2.4 m. Based on Russian fairy tales.

December brings 2 local franchises, Christmas Trees 10 and 12th installment in Three Heroes animated series from Melnitsa studio (that one adopted the Marvel approach years before Marvel, back in 2004, and it still works). The Boy and the Heron was officially released this weekend, and looks like it's gonna be pretty big, with some potential for Top 20.

2024 will start with two big blockbusters, The Bremen Musicians (an all-star remake of the Soviet cartoon musical that continues the megatrend of fairy tale adaptations and combines it with another megatrend of Soviet nostalgia) and Kholop 2 (aka Son of a Rich 2, sequel to the biggest Russian hit of 3 years before Cheburashka, with 12 m tickets).

First months actually look better than 2023 - we're getting Bulgakov's Master and Margarita adaptation (one of the most beloved books and a huge budget), Ice 3 in February (2 previous films brought 6.3 m each), The Flying Ship in March (another all-star fairy tale adaptation and a remake of a Soviet animated musical), 100 Years Ahead (Soviet young adult sci-fi adaptation and a remake of a hugely popular 1980s TV series). So far Russia is doing pretty great without Hollywood (I hope it never comes back to our theaters).
