It has but there are only 1 or 2 places showing this in 2D. 90% of the screens here only show 3D.

Notes:

Pre-selling for The Borrower Arrietty has now been released. Ticket sales so far have been robust.

Tron's IMAX sales have been pretty brisk too. Unfortunately, it has to deal with the mammoth Harry Potter so it has been reduced to midnight showings at the big IMAX theater and shared screen showtimes at the small theater.

Harry Potter watch: At this point, it looks like Harry Potter is going to pass 60,000 admissions with ease opening day.

Can it beat TS3's OW. That almost grossed 360K admissions right?

Nope, almost 375k admissions. (374,816 to be exact)

It'll be close but with the holidays coming up, I think more people will opt to see it later even with tough competition coming out the week after.

Also some Narnia news. It has apparently made $2.47m through Sunday (10 days of release). $1.258m OW.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader stormed past everyone and flew to #1. Fantasy flicks are very popular so it is no surprise that Narnia would do well. The opening is especially good when you consider that even without the 3D surcharge, it still would have beaten Prince Caspian's OW. It also had to deal with the backlash from the last movie so this opening far and away exceeded expectations. It should pass Prince Caspian by the end of the 2nd week, just before Harry Potter opens.

Bruce Lee had a good hold as good word of mouth has been spreading about the movie. It will pass $500,000.

The Next Three Days had a strong hold as The American did not incite many moviegoers.

Speaking of which, The American did just ok business as Clooney's starpower was a draw but mixed reviews and lack of advertising pushed this one to the backburner.

Revenge: A Love Story did poorly as the subject matter did not interest people who are getting into the holiday spirit.

The Social Network had a big drop due to losing screens to Narnia. Nonetheless, it will pass $500,000 and is a success here.

Police Dog Dream opened softly and intense competition from Narnia diluted its gross.

The Girl Who Played With Fire opened to about 60% of Dragon Tattoo's opening weekend gross on fewer screens. It's going to struggle getting past $70,000.

Skyline had a massive drop as horrid word-of-mouth kept people away. It's chances of 1m appear to have faded.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya had an excellent opening as many Japanese anime fans flocked to the special screenings of this movie.

Outside the top 10, The Cove had a very good drop unaffected by the Narnia craze.

Bolstered by strong reviews, The Concert had the best hold of the week and continued to do strong business over at the 2 locations.

At this point, Harry Potter 7 is running behind Toy Story 3 in admissions.

From that number alone, it looks disappointing but it should pick up as the weekend progresses. I thought the fanbase would watch it opening day but it looks like they are waiting for the weekend. Every holdover got crushed.

The Harry Potter and Narnia #'s look way off here. Harry Potter should be pummeling Narnia's 2nd weekend not being behind it. No way Narnia falls 98%. That is unheard of...even for terrible word-of-mouth films and Narnia has been having good word-of-mouth.

BOM's 2nd weekend numbers for Narnia doesn't look right either so I'm gonna hold off on posting it and wait for Variety's #s.

Weekend summary:

That number is pretty disappointing for Harry Potter, if true. It's behind Inception's first week. As it stands, a ticket to see Harry Potter is slightly more expensive than what Inception was charged but it won't make up much ground on Inception's OW gross.

This number would only be around $1.4-1.6m depending on exchange rates.

That is an unheard of drop for Narnia. This weekend's sales have been odd in general. I'm really surprised that Harry Potter has decreased 4 consecutive days and that Narnia fell 3,000 admissions from Fri. to Sat. Something is not right here.

Edit: Hong Kong blog reporting Harry Potter made around 2m and Narnia $2.95m (in 18 days). They predict that Harry Potter will pass $5m and Narnia beating Prince Caspian's total.

It was a bit foolish of me to ignore Gulliver's Travels during the preview for this week but it definitely has surprised me. I did not expect such brisk business and it being put in the largest screens has confirmed this.

Harry Potter will repeat a second week. However, with Arrietty looking very big, the weekend drop will be interesting to watch.

Tron is running at about 75% of Gulliver's Travels' pace. IMAX should help close the gap a bit though.

Megamind seems to me like it will do Despicable Me numbers.

Arrietty has been huge so far and it has done well in advanced ticketing. It'll be fascinating to see it's 2-day opening numbers.

Amazing for Gulliver's Travels. Very surprising that it overtook HP7 for #1. I thought it would do great but still under HP's numbers. As for HP7, the drop itself looks pretty bad but last weekend was somewhat deflated. Also in its favor is the amount of competition this week. You cannot have 3 pretty big films fighting for screens and get away with an increase or a slight drop from the previous week. Add in a 4th on Christmas Day and it's understandable that it would drop that much.

Tron did ok. It didn't exactly breakout nor flop. All in all it will be a success after its run is over. Marriage with a Liar opened good for what it was worth. It wasn't going to be a big blockbuster but it's not a disaster and opened with what some of the other HK films did on their OW's. Megamind's number looks pretty awful and with Arrietty taking screens away from it starting on Christmas Day, I'd say it's a pretty big flop. It doesn't look like it will match Despicable Me's OW.

Superb for Gulliver. It could end up being a close race between it and HP7 for bragging rights. That is a nice jump for Potter. Holidays helps longer movies so it's no surprise to see such a huge increase. Iffy drop for Tron. Megamind decreasing is terrible especially on a holiday. Typical drop for Marriage with a Liar.

Gulliver increases its lead over Harry Potter. It looks like Harry Potter winning a second weekend is in jeopardy. That is a frontloaded increase for Tron. It doesn't look that bad when compared to Megamind or Marriage With A Liar though.

Great for the top 2. Very good start for The Borrower Arrietty. It could pass 80k admissions in 2 days. Just ok for Tron. The good news is that it is still increasing. As for Megamind, Arrietty hurt it a lot. It'll be close to its Friday number which is not good. Reviews have been very good here, however, so word of mouth could help get people to see it.

That is amazing for Gulliver's Travels. Nice bump for Harry Potter. The Borrower Arrietty starts big. Decent increase for Tron. Megamind had a nice increase. Maybe word of mouth is starting to spread.

Well, almost all the films had a standard drop after the Christmas holiday. Arrietty had a great hold (due to several theaters giving it more showtimes and bumping other movies like Megamind/Tron to smaller screens).

Glad to see Arrietty becoming a hit in every market it's been released in so far.

5Megamind (3D Cantonese)--12542---21.7%

Excellent for Gulliver's Travels. Good increase for Harry Potter. Very nice for The Borrower Arrietty. Tron did decent and that is just bad for Megamind.

1Gulliver's Travels 3D--234054--

4The Borrower Arrietty (Cantonese)--70047--
5Megamind (3D Cantonese)--45804--

Gulliver's Travels 3D should land in the 1.8m-2.0m range, which would put it at #4, #3 or even #2 biggest OW of the year. The real kicker is that Harry Potter increased 20% this week, which would put it somewhere around 2.3m for the weekend but might lose the OW battle to Gulliver's Travels. Tron should be around $700,000 for the weekend. The Borrower Arrietty is nearing or will be at $500,000 in just 2 days. Megamind will be banking from $350,000-$400,000 this weekend.

Post Re: HK 2/24 THU: Oscar season continues. TW - BS vs. TG; BS
With 127 Hours officially opening on the 10th of this month, Oscar season has finally begun. This week, two contenders duke it out but one of them has been highly anticipated.

Black Swan is the biggest opener this week and already has over 500 likes on Facebook. True Grit is the other Oscar opener and is not expected to do well here. Rounding out the openers this week are Space Battleship Yamato and The Rite.

Thursday adm.February 24
RankTitleLWTW% chg
1Black Swan--14855--
2Sanctum 3D--10303--
3The Rite--6761--
4Space Battleship Yamato--5020--
5No Strings Attached--2480--

Great start for Black Swan. Not great for The Rite. It started out worse than Nightmare on Elm Street if memory serves me right.

After this week, we have another Oscar battle the following week. Take a look at the schedule:

3/3: The King's Speech vs. Biutiful (+ I Am Number Four, Season of the Witch)
3/10: The Fighter (+ World Invasion, Suddenly in Love)
3/17: (Unknown, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Special Screening), The Adjustment Bureau, Umizaru 3: The Last Message, Monsters, Rabbit Hole, Last Night)

The King's Speech has been holding special screenings for these 2 weeks (LW + TW) on the weekends and will be formally released next week. It will go up against Biutiful which should prove no contest. It will have to contend with I Am Number Four as well as the 2nd weekend of Black Swan to claim #1 though.

The following week will see The Fighter released. The Fighter won't do massive numbers but it will garner more eyeballs than True Grit.

HK loves its monsters. Great for Battle: LA. Unknown nips The King's Speech at the end to claim 2nd. It'll be pretty close between Unknown and TKS for #2. Yesterday, all of the top 3 movies were fighting for #1 so the race has not been decided just yet. It also looks like TKS will rebound from that horrible weekend drop (?) that it experienced last weekend. The Adjustment Bureau did slightly below average. Black Swan is starting to experience heavier drops.

Post Re: HK 3/31: Unprecedented 10 new releases hits theaters.
Many new releases coming out this Thursday. The list includes:

Sucker Punch
Don't Go Breaking My Heart
Gnomeo and Juliet
The Lincoln Lawyer
The Eagle
Sacrifice
Beastly
Inside Job
In A Better World
Exorcismus

In A Better World/Inside Job/Sacrifice are looking like arthouse/indie flicks.

Top 3 contenders for the weekend are the top 3 in the list. Don't Go Breaking My Heart had special previews last weekend so it could be a factor in determining who wins the weekend. Sucker Punch, however, has the upper hand with IMAX screens and should come out on top. Gnomeo will have to settle for 3rd.

Beastly and The Lincoln Lawyer will do a fair bit of business in their niche markets. The Eagle looks out of place and won't do well.

Post Re: HK Apr. 7-10: Rio gunning for #1; +Hanna, Limitless, B.
It's looking like Rio will dethrone Don't Go Breaking My Heart for #1 this week. It will only have one chance to do so because Rango opens next week.

Lots of animated films coming out this Easter season. We had Gnomeo & Juliet last week, Rio this week, Rango next week, Hop and Doraemon the week after.

Notes:

- New Broadway theater just opened April 1. This new theater offers twin seats in 3/6 auditoriums. Broadway's theater chain count is now up to 13.

- Japanese flicks are also coming out in bunches. Ayumi Hamasaki's concert tour opened last week; Umizaru 3 opens this week; Doraemon and Gantz will open two weeks from now.

What I really meant is that Rio will not be #1 next week and that it will be competing with Rango for screens as well as the other new releases.

Don't Go Breaking My Heart is doing really well. It will pass $1m by this week or next week. Rio is doing pretty good as well. It will not catch DGBMH in admissions but it will surpass it in gross. Limitless will beat out Unknown. Beastly is a beast (no pun intended) over here. It did 3x the business that Lincoln Lawyer did with the same amount of screens and had the highest PSA 2 weekends ago. It will probably pass $600,000 when all is said and done. Umizaru 3 had a good opening and is benefiting from the added 3D surcharge. It will definitely gross more than what Umizaru 2 did and has a slim chance of making more than Umizaru 2's total in 4 days.

Stay tuned because I'll have another update tomorrow. You might get a laugh or two out of it.

Post Re: HK 4/14: 3D porno Sex/Zen set to grab crown/eyes & headl
Let's deal with the trivial stuff first.

Sunday adm.April 10
RankTitleLWTWWKD % chgQD % chg
1Rio (3D Cantonese)--19543--+29.3%
2Don't Go Breaking My Heart--17401---14.2%

4Beastly--8140---32.1%
5Umizaru 3: The Last Message--6233---6.0%

Great increase for Rio. Good for Don't Go Breaking My Heart.

Now, onto the main attraction.

The April 14 weekend is set to be a big one and not because of the release of Scream 4. The world's first second 3D erotic film, Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy (肉蒲團之極樂寶鑑), comes to the big screen. Before proceeding, I advise you to read the links below before going any further.

Sex & Zen - Hollywood Reporter

Sex & Zen - Ticket sales

The film, Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, is the heavily anticipated remake of the 1991 hit Sex and Zen. That film grossed 18.4m HKD (about $2.36m US). Both films are based on the Chinese erotic novel called The Carnal Prayer Mat.

The 2011 movie has both Chinese and Japanese people in it so crossover appeal is expected.

Ticket sales so far have been going through the roof from the 70% or so locations that have started pre-selling. It has already sold at least 5,000 tickets so far and will be the runaway winner the coming week. Apparently, the film is banned in China so lots of people from mainland China will flock this way or to Taiwan to catch it.

Some theaters have been doing amazing business that they had to give it another screen. That is very rare.

Even some morning shows have been doing brisk business.

Notice how some front row seats have been bought? Very unusual as it's the seats in the back that are usually reserved first. Nothing like an erotic film...

Also, some places have performed rather interestingly. Typically the 7 or 8 pm time is usually the one to fill up first but for this movie, in some cases, the 10pm show is the fastest showtime to achieve it.

Even in some places where pre-selling is not expected, this has bucked the trend. Another amazing feat.

Some places as well have decided to give it special screenings for ladies only. So far, ticket sales have been amazing. Talk about sexist...where is the guys' night out screening?

As for my prediction, this will make it past 2m with a slim chance of catching TS3's OW. 90% of the 70-75% locations that have released advanced ticketing so far are doing great. It remains to be seen, however, if the other 25-30% will actually show the film or if they're being stingy with advanced ticketing.

No word yet if theaters will include free tissues/showers with the 3D ticket price.

Scream 4 also hits theaters this week but will fight to grab the remaining screens leftover by the holdovers. HK loves horror movies but the attention is simply all on Sex & Ren. It's hard to make any predictions at this point with no references of previous Scream films or any indications from screen allocations but I will say that it will be a modest success and grab $300,000 this week.

Rango also opens but it will be on a special day (Saturday). It will have to contend with Rio as well as Sex & Ren for any screens but reviews have been good. It could take home about $100,000-$150,000 in 2 days.

Mr and Mrs. Single is also coming out on Thursday. It stars Eason Chan and Rene Liu. HK loves romance movies so I wouldn't be surprised to see it pull out $80,000 this weekend.

I Saw The Devil won't do much. It's a Korean film but will suffer at the hands of Sex and Zen. $5,000-$15,000 is my guess.

Post Re: HK 4/14: 3D porno Sex/Zen set to grab crown/eyes & headl
Update: Spillover effect is occurring at theaters here. The 7/8 pm and 10 pm showtimes (and even midnights at quite a few theaters) are filling up so quickly that now it is spilling over to the 5/6 pm showtime.

This has caused headaches for theaters. Some have not posted their Thursday schedules yet or have been holding back screens. Others have had to give less screens to Sex & Zen for the 7 PM showtime because of their commitment to show other movies like Scream 4 and Mr. and Mrs. Single. Instead, Sex & Zen has gotten more 10 PM showtimes and even has 3 Thursday midnight showings at 1 location.

With Rango coming out on Saturday and strong holdovers in Rio, Don't Go Breaking My Heart and Limitless, it is virtually one big mess. Saturday and Sunday will be really interesting to watch.
