Except that's not true. The 2nd-4th biggest films combined for more admissions than The Great Grandmaster yesterday (>11k vs. 10,900 for The Great Grandmaster). Today looks even worse.

FridayJanuary 31
RankMovieLWTWWKD % chgQD % chg
1The Great Grandmaster--9,606----
2Dolittle--5,619----

7Jojo Rabbit--1,414----
8Playing with Fire--1,345----
91917--1,288----
10Dark Waters--652----
The Great Grandmaster fell about -73% from Chinese New Year's Eve's admissions. Now Dolittle + All's Well Ends Well 2020 combined for more admissions than The Great Grandmaster today. Either way, The Great Grandmaster was close to tripling Dolittle's admissions last week and now can't even double Dolittle's admissions.

Ouch all around.

I said "more than the next three LNY films combined", which are All's Well, Ends Well 2020, Enter the Fat Dragon, and You Are the One.

The Grand Grandmaster is a fan-based LNY movie as I already explained in a previous post. Some frontloading is well expected.

lol

They are all CNY films including Dolittle and Spies in Disguise. And while some frontloadedness was expected, it doesn't explain its huge drop from Chinese New Year Day 1 -> Day 2's admissions and from Day 3's admissions to Day 4. It fell more than 10,000 admissions from the previous day on both Day 2 and Day 4 but on Day 3 it held pretty well, only down something like 1,500 admissions from Day 2. I'd argue that bad-mixed word of mouth among its target audience + coronavirus played more of an impact than it being frontloaded. I think the coronavirus only started to really affect admissions for most films on Day 4.

SaturdayFebruary 1
RankMovieLWTWWKD % chgQD % chg
1The Great Grandmaster62,0009,086-85.3%-5.4%
2Dolittle--6,098--+8.5%
3All's Well Ends Well 2020--4,696--+12.3%
4Enter the Fat Dragon--3,198--+19.9%
5Spies in Disguise--2,841---8.4%
6Jojo Rabbit--2,057--+45.5%
71917--1,543--+19.8%
8Playing with Fire--1,496--+11.2%
9You Are the One--1,412---1.7%
10Dark Waters--726--+11.3%
The Great Grandmaster continues its slide. A drop of 5% on a Saturday is extremely worrisome given that most films in the top 10 increased. I believe that is the first time that Enter the Fat Dragon has beaten Spies in Disguise in admissions.

Dolittle and Spies in Disguise were not tailored to Lunar New Year while the four Chinese-language movies were.

All other things equal, being a fan-based movie, The Grand Grandmaster was expected to be the most frontloaded of all.

Okay to good reception. Ticketing site Wmoov has it at 6.4/10. HKMovie6 score is 4.2/5. Both scores are lower than Spies in Disguise, which has 7.7/10 and 4.4/5 at respective sites.

I'd say that's a good opening for Birds of Prey considering that a lot of people are staying away from movie theaters + theater chains are slashing the 9/11 AM showtimes, 9:30 PM showtime, or even both for all films. Even though The Great Grandmaster is #2 in the table above, All's Well Ends Well 2020 was the #1 film on Tuesday over The Great Grandmaster which means All's Well Ends Well 2020 is likely #2 in pre-sales then The Great Grandmaster at #3 and Dolittle at #4.

Very good start for Birds of Prey. Another terrible hold for The Grand Grandmaster. Decent for All's Well Ends Well 2020 considering how these themed movies crash and burn right after Chinese New Year and the virus outbreak affecting admissions. Not great for Dolittle. Disastrous for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Birds of Prey increased just 1.3% from its Thursday admissions on Sunday suggesting that there was a big rush factor with this film. Word of mouth seems mixed with a 3.9/5 score from user reviews so far. Mediocre holds for Dolittle and All's Well Ends Well 2020 but Dolittle does pull ahead of The Grand Grandmaster for #2. I did notice that All's Well lost theaters on Saturday which contributed to its bigger decline week-to-week on Sunday than on Thursday or Friday. 1917 pulled out the best hold of the top 10 due to winning at the BAFTAs.

Post Re: HK 2/6 THU: Birds of Prey feasts on competition
The studio behind All's Well Ends Well 2020 owns the Cinema City theater chain. I see tickets sold for the movie were concentrated in the same theater chain. It's likely some rigging going on to make the numbers look good. Anyway, The Grand Grandmaster (HK$30m+) won the LNY battle by miles. Second place is Dolittle (HK$14m+).

Birds of Prey has crossed the HK$10 million threshold and is currently targeting HK$13m, about 55% of Shazam's total gross. Not bad considering the outbreak and how the movie underperformed in the US.

Sonic the Hedgehog outopened The Gentlemen by a small margin, HK$230k (3,800 tickets sold on OD) for Sonic vs HK$220k (3,200 tickets) for The Gents. The re-release of Parasite has earned over HK$1.2m so far since January. Total gross now stands at HK$16m.

That the epidemic subsided is very good news. Maybe face masks did the work. Nearly everyone masked up in January ignoring advice from the government and WHO that masks are not effective. The anti-authoritarian protests might have helped too (unwittingly) as the city saw lower number of travelers from China, where the pandemic started. There are testing and tracing, and strict quarantine measures for people arriving. Now everyone hopes for a vaccine to come within a year or two.

The riots and protests are a double-edged sword. They may have scared away some travelers but if there's a surge in the number of cases, it may also be the trigger that causes numerous clusters to materialize.

One great thing the protests did was putting pressure on the government that was always slow to act and had to copy the protestors' messaging. The District Councils, dominated by the pro-democracy camp since they won overwhelmingly last November, were the first to offer free masks to the elderly and medical workers. A strike organized by medical staff and supported by the protestors had forced the HK Chief Executive to significantly cut down visitors from China and mandate a 14-day quarantine for arrivals.

Movie theaters are re-opening today in HK after 42 days of closure.

This weekend is seeing 7 new releases vying for attention. Trolls World Tour will hit the big screen (finally!). Another notable release is Tora-san, Wish You Were Here, the 50th film of a long running series from Japan. Horror films (Invisible Man, The Platform, The Hunt) did relatively well before theater closure. There will be two new offerings this weekend: Taiwan's The Bridge Curse and Germany's Heilstätten. Bloodshot's debut weekend was cut short because of the shutdown. Now it is getting a second chance.

Many theaters are offering discount on tickets and concessions. 50% off and BOGO are most common.

Those are the same people that threatened to strike because of coronavirus. Using all sorts of excuses like coronavirus is dangerous or the lack of PPE even though they had weeks of PPE available, they took an oath to save lives. Not to mention some of their members would refuse to provide service if you don't sympathize with the riots/protest movement.

Spreading disinformation does not help. The HK Chief Executive herself admitted there was shortage of surgical masks and other protective gear. Over 10,000 medical workers joined the strike. They enjoyed wide public support. 61% of HongKongers surveyed supported it while 31% opposed it. 75% disapproved of the government's handling of the outbreak while 11% approved of it. Refusal of medical service was some made up smear.

People remain cautious when it comes to moviegoing. Saturday numbers do not appear to show much improvement over the month of March:

Sat, May 9 - 22,000 tickets sold (#1 The Bridge Curse)
Sat, March 28 (6pm closing) - 10,000 (#1 Bloodshot)
Sat, March 21 - 19,000 (#1 The Hunt)
Sat, March 14 - 30,000 (#1 The Battle of Jangsari)
Sat, March 7 - 33,000 (#1 The Call of the Wild)
Sat, February 29 - 28,000 (#1 The Invisible Man)

Admissions for Saturday, May 9
1. (NEW) The Bridge Curse (Taiwan) - 4,700
2. Bloodshot - 4,600
3. (NEW) A Good Doctor (France) - 2,200
4. (NEW) Trolls World Tour - 2,100
5. (NEW) Heilstätten (Germany) - 1,200
6. Happy Old Year (Thailand) - 1,100
7. (Re-issue) Better Days (HK/China) - 900
8. (NEW) Kamen Rider Reiwa: The First Generation (Japan) - 900
9. Mr. Zoo : The Missing VIP (South Korea) - 700
10. (NEW) Tora-san, Wish You Were Here (Japan) - 600

Trolls World Tour was unable to deliver a happy tune. It seems families largely avoided cinemas.

Horror movies continued to outpace other genres at the box office during the pandemic following the successes of The Invisible Man, The Platform, and The Hunt. The Bridge Curse continued the trend.

The new Digimon movie brought some good news on the box office front last weekend. But everyone in HK is talking about an existential crisis facing them. This could spell the end of "one country, two systems", a legal principle that sets HK apart from the rest of China in regards to individual liberty, economic freedom, and political autonomy.

Movie theaters are closing again for at least 7 days, starting Wednesday.

Infection trend is on the upswing. This past week saw new confirmed cases go up from 83 (Jun 30 - Jul 6) to 236 (Jul 7 - Jul 13). Percentage wise, it was up 184% week to week. Hong Kong has a population of 7.3 million, comparable to the state of Arizona.
