Oooooh :| so it's like an election. They choose to get a new leader if they want  and end up releasing MORE Hollywood movies

It's more akin to an inauguration than an election, as elections do not exist in China. All the workings of an "election" - if you want to call it that - have already taken place over the last months and years. Essentially purging the people that would oppose him. So this event is more just an opportunity to unveil his third term and to make some grand statements that state media can use to further brainwash the nation.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office

I think it's more than just Marvel. Any movie that makes the U.S. look good, heroic, strong, brave, "better than China", etc. seems to not be given a release. Thus, they allowed The Batman, which is all about chaos and crime; The Bad Guys and Minions: The Rise of Gru, which are about villains; and smaller films like The Mauritanian, which is about Guantanamo Bay; and Ambulance, which again shows the U.S. in a negative way, as a place where there's lots of crime. It's just that Marvel is very pro-U.S., very flag-waving and patriotic, that it just won't be allowed to be shown in China anymore as there's another cultural revolution taking place right now, albeit not as extreme as the previous one - but this one is at the foreign influence removal stage.

Devotion, for example, also will not be allowed to be shown in China, as well as Top Gun: Maverick, Lightyear, DC League of Super-Pets, etc. All make the U.S. look too good. It's an ideological thing, not a brand thing.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office

I wouldn't think that much. The first made over $200 million in China, and while I'm not an economist, I believe I've heard the Yuan is getting weaker and the Dollar is getting stronger, so that might also be a hurdle for it. I also wouldn't like to guess how much it could make. The Chinese economy just doesn't feel as strong as it was in 2010. But if it makes $200 million, I think we can be pleased.

I have not seen any signs that there will be government hurdles. Cameron and 20th Century have been courting the China side for a while now, and there isn't any on-the-nose 'America-Fuck-Yeah' sentiment in these movies, so I think there it might be free to perform. I mean, there's always going to be twisting the numbers if it is TOO popular, because China cannot and will not have an American film beating any local records or its local blockbuster for the year, so there's that. But as you said, if it's going to make a couple hundred million, I feel it will be allowed to make that.

If anything, the story is just the narrative that China wants - they probably feel like they are the pure, natural, downtrodden Na'vi natives just fighting for their sovereignty and place in the world, and the Unobtainium miners are the greedy bad Americans that want to colonize China. Of course, this isn't true, but on film this is why China will probably allow this movie to be released - to allow that anti-US sentiment to proliferate.

Yes, it is getting much worse, and to the point where China is heading towards being another North Korea. In 2019, there were 136 foreign imports released in China, and just 73 last year. So far this year there have only been 38 foreign movies released. They state that Hollywood needs to make "higher quality movies" and "respect the cultures, traditions, and interests of Chinese audiences", which all that translates to "Hollywood needs to let us dictate the content of their movies, and if they do not then they're not allowed to play in China".

Avatar: The Way of Water hasn't been given a license yet either, despite having passed all censors. There's still time, of course, but it's clearly political. I suspect there will be even less foreign movies allowed to play next year, maybe even zero (certainly zero blockbusters).

if Avatar 2 gets december release and good screen count for 3 weeks and there are no market limitations like COVID closures impact major BO markets, it can beat Endgame China . But there are too many ifs here. Let us see if it gets a release date and how the market is at that time before projecting it. Getting a release itself is not a lock in this environment. For all we know Zoe Saldana might have said something pro tibet and that is enough for this movie to be banned.
