Maybe the shopkeeper because humour is involved, but generally I do not think Chinese being in movies makes any difference to Chinese people's preference of one movie over another. I am certain the Malaysian crash site made zero impact.

They only got put up yesterday, but this poster is on every group of bus billboards I see. It is a striking image. I like the colour tone of this campaign. Would've worked so well in the summer.

At "my" cinema, this had 39 showtimes on Friday, I just went to the 9pm one, it was about 75% full.

If ever wanted a more stark example of culture difference, check out The Grinch.

China: struggling to reach $3 million
America: aiming for $300 million

Creed II will be released on 4th January! The first Creed wasn't released here at all so it will be interesting to see how well this one does. I'm guessing not very well. Boxing isn't popular here and neither are black people.

Well I can't imagine the Grinch brand being that popular or even known much especially with it so connected to Christmas. One of the evil holidays.

I like how blunt you are sometimes.

Yeah, but seemingly everything the US likes China also does, so for The Grinch to be shunned so much is surprising, and Christmas is celebrated here, like, everywhere has Christmas decorations, but it's so superficial and not in any sense a true celebration of Christmas. It's seen more as an excuse to make things glittery.

With five new releases in the last few days, Aquaman has slowed down. Still at $255m, so will probably finish with $265-270m. We have 3 days holiday for NY. Spider-Verse is fucked, though, and will probably struggle to reach $50m total. It's a shame because it's a much, much better movie than DC's latest debacle.

Creed II and Bumblebee are out on 4th January.

Day 1

Creed II bombed with just $600k. Won't even out-gross Escape Plan 2.

Bumblebee hit almost $17 million.

No trouble getting good seats for Creed II this weekend then.

Woopie-do!

So it's out-grossed Venom. And Spider-Verse is at $57m. Still shit.

After 2 days

Creed II is up to .... wait for it ... a whopping $1.3 million! :tears:

Bumblebee is up to $40 million.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office

There actually does seem to be a reasonable crowd in some of the Creed II showings I checked this weekend...however it just hardly has any showings at all. It's got just 2 to maybe at most 4 showings per cinema a day and that's with only 2 days in release. The cinemas are just not warming to it, and it shows that they generally just only allow for one foreign film to flourish, and in that case Bumblebee is Tencent backed so it's no surprise there.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office

Tencent backed or not, Transformers is just on a whole different level of popularity here compared to anything else, especially a boxing movie where the first wasn't shown and has a black lead. But you're right about showtimes. On its third day Creed II only had 18k showings, whereas Bumblebee had 164k. But that's not the reason it's doing poorly. It's per screen average is just $23, whereas Bumblebee's is $119, and that's even with Creed II enjoying a far cheaper average ticket price.

Doesn't China usually release a bunch of big movies around this time?

Yeah, but nothing noteworthy. By which I mean nothing foreign and nothing like last year. The Wandering Earth has made $287 million, Crazy Alien has made $207 million, and Pegasus has made $150 million. I guess these totals won't be too far from their final totals as most people are back to work now.

Lol, The Wandering Earth is going to do 600M at least

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office

Honestly, I haven't been checking the China box office at all recently. I just glanced at the most recent totals when I saw Flava's post. If it's going to do $600 million, then great. And oops. ;)
