I didn't follow it as closely for those two films :) , but it's definitely doing at least as well as those were, and this is on a non-summer Monday, a much worse day than when the other two opened (a summer Wednesday and Nov Friday respectively).

OK, finally has some real midnight number: 4m yuan, surpassing TF2's record of 3.5m.

The weekend pattern is similar to U.S., as most have both Saturday and Sunday off. On Tuesday films will see a surge in admissions but a dip in gross since all admissions are half price. The reported gross are normally for the entire week, although the 3-day weekend numbers do get reported sometimes for the bigger films as well.

xiayun,
can you confirm if the below post in bom is accurate?

I've seen it for the first time last night, it was of cource full, and the tickets of tonight were also sold out at yestaday.

And I love this movie! Definitly I would see it for more than two other times.

That's just a speculation after the first day and has been reported around Chinese websites since last night. Basically the article says it'll break 100m yuan by Wednesday and 250m yuan for the whole week, but there is no real post-Monday data yet.

do you think that is overly optimistic. that seem way more than even tf2 ow and i would think tf2 would have had at least same hype level considering it was a sequel to a highly successful movie.

Not necessarily. It earned 31m yuan ($4.5m) without midnight on Monday, normally the slowest day of the week, so I could see all 7 days above 30m yuan, with Sat and Sun touching 40m, even with the enormous hype it had to start with. Also theaters are putting up more 3D screens and shifting more screens to it in general even as the film is being shown. That being said, I do want to wait to see at least Tuesday's number before going too far, although I'm not sure if the daily figures are going to be reported as quickly as it did yesterday.

OK, look like we have some rumored Tuesday number: 45m yuan ($6.6m). That'd be out-of-this-world good.

Wow cool. 120M that would be a big boost to the overseas total. If it even comes near to that mark China would be the next biggest market after US. Go China

If it keeps this up, it'll certainly challenge the final number Avatar puts up in France and Russia, which I believe will be among the Top 3 for it (excluding the US).

xiayun,

How does China compare to the larger European markets, how does its growth compare to Russia's surge in admissions/revenue, and how long till it surpasses Japan as the biggest Asian market for Hollywood films?

Also, how high do you think China's box office could potentially go? 2009 was up 50% over 2008 according to your blog, and Titanic's 11 year record was broken 3 times this year (with Avatar potentially doubling it). It's pretty clear that the market over there is booming, with no real sign of it cooling down soon.

Do you think that it could eventually rival the USA?

Of course it will

But we shouldn't think of China as a market that will be dominated by American films, they have their own industry.

India would be a better comparison. Except China has the potential to be a market bigger in size than the US and European markets. But there has to be more cinema infrastructure and more importantly, a reduction in piracy and bootlegging. But that's a problem across Asia.

Would it be less of a guarantee if I clarified that I meant whether China will ever rival the USA when it comes to the grosses of Hollywood films? ;)

I don't think of China as a market that will be dominated by American films, but I don't think India's the best comparison either, considering how massive Bollywood is over there. I'm looking more at how Japan was a few years ago, with huge national productions with Hollywood films also performing at high levels with some regularity (and in Titanic's case, holding onto the top slot of highest grossing films for a while).

The way Avatar is poised to just... explode in China, way beyond what any local film has done, indicates that there really isn't much of a comparison between China and either India OR Japan though. It's definitely the most interesting international market to follow right now (sorry, Russia!), that's for sure.

:whaa:

just when you think all reports in internet are overly optimistic, avatar exceed even those expectations. 120m is just crazy. i thought 100m in china would not happen until tf3.

may be italy would join the party and we would see avatar cruise past titanic over there and make 100m. :ninja:

Russia will surprise you all, damn capitalist bastards! So what if China becomes #1 international market? Hollywood would only get a fraction of that pie - and this will never change. CIS is much more attractive in a way that it's open. And we are rising!
