We'll just have to wait and see. It looked like it might be stabilizing after last year's film (still broke the record in revenue, but missed in admissions), but then this year's film shattered that idea when it earned the second biggest OW (2-day and 3-day) ever in history and surpassed ¥10 billion in just 23 days. The franchise was slowly growing in the mid 2010s before it saw a big jump in 2016, then another big jump in 2018, and once more this year (2023). The jump this year is more significant, of course, since it's the first to do over ¥10 billion, and not just a little more, but instead on track to reach ¥13 billion. That's pretty insane. And the fact these films were doing close to ¥10 billion since 2018 every year, and is now well above that mark, is, well, unprecedented, of course, for an annual franchise. It's about to become unprecedented for any franchise when a couple more films get added to the list.

Crazy how it's going to more than triple the gross of the Conan film that came 10 years before it (over 3.5x if it finishes at ¥13 billion). I wonder what was responsible for the sudden explosion of interest over these years. I don't recall anything particularly eventful about this year's Conan versus the previous ones either.

If it happens, it's very, very interesting. Nothing spent on marketing, no footage at all, zero images, cast unknown, nothing of any sort. It'll need to rely solely on Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki's name. I'd like to see what happens.

Funny you posted that because I was just thinking this morning how we have nothing but a 6 month old teaser poster, no trailers or clips, and not even any cast members revealed, for his final film which opens in 6 weeks. Now it's confirmed that's the intent. They won't be releasing anything(even saying it's not like the book) and have audiences go in totally blind with a teaser poster and title only. Very interesting. I don't know if it'll create a bigger opening since no one knows anything about it, literally, and will want to be the first to know, or if people will hold off to see what others say first.

I highly doubt about that, first of all, it's not Ghibli's official account, and if we look into the past, the Wind Rises released its first teaser trailer less than a month before release date. As of now we're still more than a month away from How do you live? release date, we could get new promotional materials in the upcoming weeks.

I am seeing more reports that Miyazaki has indeed decided to NOT release any images or footage of his final film. Moviegoers will have to go into it with no preconceptions. I really like this idea. Sometimes we go into films "blind" to a point when we don't look up trailers and avoid them on social media, but how often do we go without even seeing a poster of something? I don't know what this will do for the box office, I can see it benefitting it (creating more interest to see what his final film even is) or potentially harming it (going to a movie with literally zero information could be too much for some, like families). We'll know in 6 weeks!

It's not too uncommon for films to wrap up production ~4-6 weeks before release in Japan, and then we get a trailer, new posters/images, etc., in that short window, so it could have just been the case again here (pookpooi was correct with this happening to The Wind Rises back in 2013). But now we know it's just because Miyazaki doesn't want audiences to go into his final with preconceptions beforehand. You have his name and the title of the movie (which doesn't follow the book apparently either lol) and that's it! Go see it! This is a good question to ask in a Poll I think. Give me a few.

POLL added. Question: Would you pay to see a theatrical film with NO plot, trailers, images, posters, casting, etc., revealed beforehand? All you have to go on is the title of the movie and its director.
