Super Mario is doing super well! You can go back over the past several pages to see various stats. In short, it's performance so far is better than any Hollywood film in history and in the top 3/4 overall at this point in its run. Now, its weekdays post holidays have been pretty weak and will probably allow more and more films catch up to it over time (weekdays are just as important as weekends in Japan, with that split being close to 50:50 for the all-time biggest films in the market, which is why skewing too young can be a hindrance), but we need to see what its weekends are like before projecting what sort of gross it could really be aiming for. ***** Update: Thursday came in lower than Tuesday, which isn't unusual (they're the two weakest days of the week), so the hat giveaway at select Toho Cinemas didn't have an impact. So, predicting it hits 5 million admissions on Friday. There's a small chance it still did on Thursday, but Friday looks almost certain to be the day after the Thursday admissions. If Toei makes an announcement, they'll probably just hold off until after the weekend. So, two questions now: -Will it be able to catch up to Suzume (currently at ¥14.61 billion as of Sunday) and become the #2 film of 2022? -Will it be able to reach ¥15 billion? If it plays normally from here on out, it shouldn't be able to do either. But it's been super leggy the past couple months and Toei will almost certainly do the final day announcement with a final giveaway in the near future (maybe June?). This doesn't lock up ¥15 billion, but it makes it a possibility until that actual final day comes and goes. And 10 million admissions was a question a week or so ago, but I believe it's in position now to reach that milestone on its own. |

Always appreciate when you share older numbers! Also... just a heads up. Weekend drops will be horrendous. Since last Friday was a holiday, this Friday is going to be down like 75-90% across the board. And since last Saturday and Sunday were boosted a bit for being a last weekend of a holiday period, I wouldn't be surprised by drops up to/over 50% there too. Sooo... everything is very likely dropping over 50% (maybe 60%+) this weekend. |

If mario drops 50% on satsun then 15b will be very hard with this holiday slate I think. Even with very good drops a 13b finish would be far more likely. So it would need to have fantastic drops for 15b. |

It's not a two-way race, it's a three-way race between Suzume, Slam Dunk, and Mario. For now my prediction is Suzume, followed by Slam Dunk, followed by Mario, but since I say it's a race, any of them still have a chance of winning. |

And having One Piece Film Red almost hit ¥20 billion in 2022 further shows how strong the box office is right now. All that said, it would be very nice if Mario can do it so Hollywood doesn't go 10 years without a ¥15 billion film. I don't see anything on Hollywood's calendar for the rest of 2023 or 2024 that has any real chance. But then again, many ¥15 billion films are unpredictable and aren't considered likely candidates. |

The good news is that it has a high start so it can afford to bleed out. Still that would be an amazing result relative to pre release expectations. And I guess gives us a baseline of how much GW can frontload a film if it only hits like, 12-13b or so. |

I know it's annoying that I'm putting the estimate for Mario's third weekend just shy of ¥1 billion, but that's what I'm just getting with the avg. ticket price dropping some. It's so close though that it could have gotten there, but better to be "surprised" if it cracked it vs estimating right on the mark and it ends up being ¥980/990 million or something. And the drop obviously looks terrible, but remember it increased 34% in its second weekend due to Golden Week. A big drop was expected, and it looks even bigger here since Japan is on 3-day weekends now and Friday was down almost 90% since last Friday was a holiday, while Sat/Sun were down a little over 40% (41/42% or so). So with weekends being 3-day now, this ~60% drop looks especially bad since Friday is included. Golden Week gave it a huge total right out of the gate, so its three-week total is still the third highest ever, and the highest ever for a Hollywood film. It's going to lose a lot of ground over the next week or two though since it's having weak weekdays, and ¥15 billion is probably unlikely, but the film exceeding ¥10 billion is going to be very impressive, and the higher it goes from there (¥12/13 billion looks likely to me) just adds to the impressiveness. And I'm estimating Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine missed the Biggest Fifth Weekend Chart (which I have a ¥500 million cutoff for) with around ¥450 million. I'm estimating this will bring its five-week total up to around ¥11.06 billion ($82.2 million) / 7.82 million admissions. Based on its post-GW numbers, it's likely heading for ~¥12.5-13 billion ($93-97 million) / 8.8-9.2 million admissions. Now, this doesn't included any late farewell event Toho may do for it. They've had one for the last few films (except 2021) which gave them a final little bump, so this range could be a little higher if Toho does something. |

Since "The First Slam Dunk" is a a success it makes me wonder if they will possibly do more with the "Slam Dunk" franchise since the box office numbers and admissions proves it's big. Could it make them want to possibly make a sequel, Make a new manga and even anime series? |

Inoue isn't even working on the series he does have ongoing and there is below 0 chance he's ever letting someone else continue one of his series. |

There's clearly still big demand for Slam Dunk after all this time. It's a shame Inoue, who I presume has full control of it, doesn't allow more to be done with the property. |

Yep! Very nice. The weekend top 10 figures haven't been released yet but I think pretty much all the totals/admissions for everything playing has been, so I'll begin updating the charts here soon. The only ones that I'll hold off on/can't update yet are various Biggest Weekend Charts that will be needing updated. |
