I could try to do something similar for German films in Japan, but no promises that I could find sufficient data. I don't know off the top of my head, but chances are it's just an unknown property in Japan. An unknown children's property must be the hardest sell out there for any market I would imagine, because young children aren't really going to look it up themselves, and their parents aren't going to take them to see something they're unfamiliar with. I don't recall Christopher Robin doing well either a few years back. Different than an animated Winnie the Pooh, of course, but more evidence that the property is unknown. |

Winnie the Pooh also bombed in the US and UK as well, markets where the character is arguably the most popular. I think the film just didn't look different enough from the TV series and direct-to-video movies to be worth the price of admission for most families. |

I'm taking a break from here and the internet starting next week for at least a month, so I'm going to continue to update and post various charts during this time. (Less to do when I come back.) If anyone is available or happen to live somewhere in the nearby area, I'm going to the Starwood Festival (40th anniversary) this year from July 13th-19th held at the Wisteria Campground and Event Site in Pomeroy, Ohio, a village about 2 hours southeast of Columbus. Pretty secluded and isolated location. Vaccines are strongly encouraged, COVID guidelines will still be in place for this year in enclosed areas, and it is only 18+ this year due to the pandemic. Besides the spiritual events, there's typically a lot of music, pyro displays (lots of fire in general), and there are hundreds of workshops present, so there is probably something to find interest in. The husband is also having a crystal workshop with a friend and will be handing out some free gifts to those that participate. And if none of that is of interest, there is also an Un-Birthday Mad Hatter Tea Party for everyone who doesn't have a birthday the day of, as well as an Alice in Wonderland themed Birthday Party for everyone who had a birthday the prior year. Both have been a lot of fun in the past. Starwood Festival Just shoot me a PM if interested in coming to meet up! (We'll pay and add you to the pod.) It's open to everyone, and everyone is open and nice. Just come knowing what you may see and not get offended. (Clothing is optional, for example, but few go nude, and skyclad rituals are usually at night/overnight, or in the early morning.) It's been a lot of fun in the past, and always nice to get away. |

I will definitely have fun. I've not just been burning out here in recent months (still enjoy being here, don't get me wrong), but just in general life, really. (Also note that "2 million is a long shot" is for the Oricon number; since they inherently undercount everything, I certainly wouldn't rule out a press release from Aniplex announcing 2 million shipped at some point. Because retailer returns aren't much of a thing in the JP DVD/BD market, you can for all intents and purposes treat shipped numbers as equivalent to sell-through, because Aniplex will be paid for them.) [And this is not actually relevant to this thread, but it is really funny how, even though physical media is on its way out, we have two historic exceptions to the rule happening at the same exact time. In addition to Kimetsu's huge numbers, the second season of Uma Musume is putting up the biggest numbers for a TV anime in history. Volume 1's first week was the biggest ever (112k), and its total is also the biggest ever (185k and counting). And Vol. 2 just came out and smashed Vol. 1's week one record (150k), though it'll obviously be more front-loaded than Vol. 1. If you're wondering, it's mostly driven by pack-in codes for the popular new mobile game. Even so, this is an absolutely mind-boggling number for a TV anime, and there have been many many shows with game codes and none ever came anywhere near this.] |

Alright, so today is my last day accessing the internet (and here) for at least 4 weeks. Thanks again for all the words above, and I wish everyone well! I did not get around to posting the past weekend actuals, so apologies, but here are a few notes for the top performers right now: -Evangelion is very likely to reach ¥10 billion now. It will end up earning ~90% of the combined grosses of the first three films (its three predecessors) in the Rebuild series. What an incredible accomplishment, and perfect way to send off this franchise. -Detective Conan has been holding very well lately (even increased this past weekend), so it's still got some gas left in the tank. ¥7.5 billion is lookin good now, which while below the last two films due to theater closures impacting it, is very impressive given said circumstances it's had to perform under. And being the 3rd biggest film in a franchise of 24 films is huge regardless. -Part one of the Rurouni Kenshin finale broke ¥4 billion on Monday, and just might manage to outgross 2014's The Legend Ends. Both of these milestones seemed impossible given its first 6 weeks "suffered" from theater closures, but its legs have been incredible. Still early to really project where Part 2 may end up since Part 1 is still bringing in a decent amount of fans. And note that COVID cases have been increasing in Tokyo again in recent days, which could hinder some of the July/August releases. Too early to say what will happen, just don't be too surprised if a delay or two occurs if things worsen and/or the government requests closures again. If anything, capacity restrictions and early closing hours in Tokyo will almost certainly be extended beyond their current July 12th deadline due to the safely concerns regarding the Olympics (and they'll likely reverse their decision to have some spectators back to having zero again now).
