Is it possible for Demon Slayer to cross 40B threshold at the end of golden shower week?

May 10th, Rengoku's birthday could be the day it is announced that it has passed 40B as it is the next monday after Golden Week. Would be pretty fitting if it happened.

Apparently covid cases are once again rising quite quickly in Japan. What are the odds of additional restrictions being reimplemented ? Of theaters being closed ?

It'll be something to keep an eye on, since any restrictions will be implemented before Golden Week for sure, but until anything happens, we just wait.

Osaka has requested a new state of emergency as they're experiencing the worst of the fourth wave. The governor has also requested stricter measures this time, such as store closures and online classes resuming again, which would be similar to last April. Besides the early closures of certain businesses (like restaurants, bars, etc.), nothing has been closed since a full year ago in Japan.

Tokyo's governor is also expected to request a new state of emergency, although the details of it are unknown at this time.

It's important to note that aside from the initial state of emergency last April, the other states of emergency haven't been nationwide (just in the prefectures mostly affected) and have been sort of a quasi-state of emergency. No businesses have been closed since last April/May, and the only restrictions have been early closures (8/9pm) and some capacity limits.

I wouldn't anticipate theaters to close, though some of the earlier restrictions from last year (50% capacity restriction and no concessions allowed) could be something we see in the coming weeks. If any theaters close, I currently only see it being a possibility in Osaka given the governor's stricter requests made yesterday. Theaters in Osaka have already taken the steps in preparation of restrictions being implemented there by suspending reservations beginning on April 22nd and postponing the weekend scheduling in case they need to make adjustments.

And the Tokyo Olympics are only 3 months away. Tokyo and the Japanese government are in a peculiar situation now. Do they go the strict route and request closures for a month or so? Or do they implement another quasi-state of emergency with the usual early closures and capacity limits?

How will the public react? Nothing has been closed in Tokyo or any parts of Japan since early last May. Remember that suicide killed 6x more people than COVID last year in Japan, and was the first time in seven years suicides increased. 2020 had 20,919 suicide deaths, and just 3,460 COVID deaths. But Japan has also never really had any major COVID outbreaks, if you will, that could potentially lead to more deaths.

We just have to see what's decided when the time comes.

187-Day Cumulative Total: ¥39,731,939,300 ($379.78 million) / 28,769,250 Admissions *est.*

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

Last week's weekdays have been adjusted upward (+¥10 million and 5,000 admissions) to account for the higher actual total versus estimated total. Last week's weekdays (4/12-16) accounted for almost 92% of the prior weekend's (4/10-11) earnings.

Also note that its share of rural showings versus urban showings went way up as of Friday (since it was hit harder in the urban prefectures in terms of seating/showings), meaning the usual locations won't be accounting for as much of its total from this point forward, so it should be coming in decently higher than they suggest. This was already true last week (being off ~¥2 billion and 1,000 on average each day), so it could be even more true this week. We'll see.

One quick question Corpse
What's the shortest run of Detective Conan movie and what is it's longest run?
And how will this new movie fare to the longest running Conan movie?

Kinda wanna see how much does longevity of each Detective Conan change throughout the years.

They regularly average between a 5-6 multiplier (usually on the lower end), except the last two films got a 6.4 and 7.1 due to expanding to premium formats later in their runs that brought back the core fans for repeat viewings. They tend to mostly wrap up in mid/late-July.

It's probably safe to predict the average 5-5.5x for this one since it's already on all premium formats, which would get it to ¥9-9.5 billion. ¥9.371 billion is needed to break the franchise record. However, this one could go above that average and climb closer to 6x or a little higher if there is enough of a chance of reaching ¥10 billion (6.2x is needed for that) for Toho to push it there. Also, it helps that there's little competition compared to past films in the franchise (lack of Hollywood releases to compete for its screens, especially premium ones).

And this is presuming theaters more or less operate normally (with just minor restrictions) during its run.

From my estimation after emergency declaration, DS is likely to pass ¥40B within May 9 rather than May 5 (the end of Golden Week). But studio can prematurely announce the number and celebrate just in time for May 10 (Rengoku'a birthday).

I think that's higher that what was expected right? Esp. with the opening weekend of DS? I'm trying to look for Corpse compilation of the block busters legs but couldn't pinpoint the exact page

About 6.5 is the average in the market, so it's well beyond that. A handful of films (like 4-5) a year manage to get from 10-12, but 12 or higher is more difficult and might have one or two films get there a year, which is why I made 12 the cutoff point on the best multipliers list I have.

Also, achieving a 10+ multiplier usually requires a prime release date in March, April, July, August, December, and sometimes November. It's tough to get that high outside of those 6 months, so if a film released in one of the other 6 off-season months does go above 10 (and especially 12), it's even more notable. And in Demon Slayer's case, October is the worst month of the year at the Japan box office. It's over 2-3 months away from any holiday period, and only has 2 or 3 individual holidays to take advantage of before New Year.

I remember thinking in first weekend that it will probably leg around 6-7x like Yo Kai Watch movie. Boy I was so wrong.

Fortunately realised that soon enough, but even then the eventual rise from ¥30B closing to actually hitting ¥40B itself is pretty legendary.

Here's the rough guide:

15x (Phenomenal)
10x (Excellent)
8x (Great)
7x (Good)
6x (Acceptable)
5x (Mediocre)
4x (Poor)
3x (Awful)

This won't apply for every film, but think of it as a general guide. A long-running franchise film (Doraemon, Detective Conan, Pokemon), for example, isn't going to pull a 15, 10, and 8 is usually out of range as well. But that doesn't mean their legs are bad or anything. Most franchise films have traditional release dates (Doraemon in March, Detective Conan in April, etc.) and a predetermined audience that come out for them during the same times that results in them having pretty similar legs. The films that do get above 10, above 12, above 15, etc., is a result of bringing in a significant amount of casual moviegoers, either assisted by a holiday period and/or just natural interest.

And sometimes you'll get that one film every few years that gets up to/over 20x (and sometimes higher, like 25/30x), but most years won't have a film reach 20. And I've never seen a wide release that earns close to or over ¥1 billion have a multiplier under 3. I'm sure it happens with some small, low-grossing niche films, but it's a very rare occurrence. Even the Girls und Panzer film in release right now is on track to hit 4 (or at least come close).
