Not box-office related but worth sharing since Splatoon 3 (Switch game) broke a long-standing record in the Japan video game market, setting a new launch week sales record that could very well hold for years and years to come:

This is a ridiculous launch (three days in release).

Thanks for the info, Corpse! It's interesting to see how all these long-standing Japanese records have been breaking "recently" (Movies, manga, and now even video games).

Also, interesting that all those games are RPGs except for Splatoon (and maybe you could count Animal Crossing: New Horizons as non-RPG too I guess).

Splatoon and Animal Crossing are the only non-Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Monster Hunter titles on the list (even when expanded to the top 25+), the four pillars of Japan's video game industry, yes.

And yes, lots of records (either first week records or all-time records) being broken across nearly every medium over the past few years.

I just saw this:
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... nd/.189599

Is there a way for it to get to 10 weeks at #1?
What is the movie that would take OP Red out of #1?

I remember when Final Fantasy VII came out in the UK. It was huge, but nobody had ever heard of it before. So many people were perplexed. I don't believe any of the previous six came out in the UK. Maybe some people had bootlegs, but even then they were niche. So it was as if the series started with the seventh. I'm also not sure why only the seventh one came out in the UK and why it was massive and the previous six weren't.

What is the movie that would take OP Red out of #1?

Well, this article is wrong... it's been #1 for 6 consecutive weeks now, not 8. :mer:

As for what film could dethrone it... Uhh... nothing in September, so it'll get up to 9 consecutive weeks at #1. I also have doubts any of the openers in the first week of October will dethrone it, so I'd say 10 weeks at #1 looks pretty good (seventh most ever since 1998).

Don't want to project higher than this without seeing what sort of numbers it's doing at that point. The most likely candidate to dethrone it, however, *should* be the new Sword Art Online in the third weekend of October if nothing before then does so.

Monday is an actual again (reporting on certain milestones has allowed for a few Monday actuals!).

Under ¥1 billion away from the elusive ¥15 billion milestone after day 40, and with the next giveaway and Silver Week about to begin (Sept. 17th), in addition to two back-to-back 3-day holiday weekends (09/17-19 and 09/23-25), that milestone will be achieved pretty quickly.

I guess it depends on if Toei wants to mail that the goal. On its own, after Silver Week (assuming it's at ~¥15.5/16 billion come September 25th), it should be able to reach ¥17.5/18 billion from there if it played out normally in theaters. However, that could be extended if Toei does more giveaways.

That may not be an answer to your question, exactly, but it depends on how far Toei wants to take it. So... I'd say the odds are at least fair?

And this is sometimes the thing with runs in Japan. They can remain open-ended for months, with the final trajectory pretty unknown until relatively close to the actual finish.

Reposting this to show some great examples of what I mean.

Frozen's run was almost over at this point despite it still going strong. It only grossed ¥1.25 billion more after its sixteenth weekend above, and that was because Disney pulled the plug on its box-office run by releasing it early on home video. If Disney had delayed the home video release, it would have grossed significantly more (maybe ¥3-4 billion more as it just entered Summer Vacation) to likely become Hollywood's biggest film in Japan by overtaking Titanic. It was a really suspicious move by Disney, like they purposefully didn't want it to go any higher.

On the other end of this, it looked like Bohemian Rhapsody and Howl's Moving Castle were nearing the end of their runs, but both ended up grossing just as much as Frozen did after their sixteenth weekends, ¥1.20 billion and ¥1.31 billion, respectively, despite much lower weekend/weekly numbers at this point because their runs in theaters were very long (two and three times longer than Frozen). Bohemian Rhapsody, especially, was in theaters for a entire YEAR before it was released on home video in the market. And Howl's Moving Castle got an expansion many weeks/months later in its run to push it above Princess Mononoke.

So, it comes down sometimes to how far the studio or distributor want to push their films. If the only option to see a film is theatrically, their runs can be pushed really, really far.

Perhaps the most important weekend (since OW, at least) coming up to get a clearer picture of where it may be heading. Presales for Saturday are very strong (much higher than last week), as expected from the giveaway and start of a 3-day holiday weekend, so it looks good right now.

As long as it manages up to a 25/30% increase in its seventh weekend, it'll hit ¥15 billion on Monday, but the weekend increase *should* be higher than this. I think up to 50% can be expected, and the closer it gets to that mark, or higher obviously, the better its chances of hitting the Top 10 All-Time in the future.
