Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 2023 Charts (Finally) Updating.
Four 2022 releases, five including JJK0 from Dec. 2021 for a 12-month period, made the list (12+ weeks in the Top 5) above... Pretty insane stat.

Hello Corpse, Glad to see you back. Do you know why the re-release of Titanic ended so fast in Japan ? Plus the numbers for the last few days were huge with a full re-release how much do you think that re-release would have added to the total ?

It was a limited 2-week (14-day) re-release. Its opening weekend wasn't anything special, but boy did it put up some nice numbers after that, and then in its second weekend (increased over 100%!).

The biggest numbers came from its last 4 weekdays though where it nearly DOUBLED its 10-day total.

It's hard to say what a multi-month re-release would have done. I can see where the 2-week run was an incentive for moviegoers to come out ASAP, and this was seen especially in its final days before it ended (last 4 days almost as big as its first 10 days). A regular run would stretched out the business more.

This 25th Anniversary re-release outgrossed the 2012 re-release despite the limited 2-week run. Or, maybe because OF the limited 2-week run if you're on the side of that being a factor in bringing out fans.

Hi Corpse,

Just a minor correction to the charts. According to its official account, Lonely Castle in the Mirror has topped 1 billion yen:

https://twitter.com/kagami_eiga/status/ ... HVf4nzgtog

It’s a small victory for independent animation in Japan. Also, is this the first Keiichi Hara film to make a billion?

Thanks! Fixed. If I missed anything else, let me know.

If you exclude the Crayon Shin-chan films he directed 1997-2002, then it's Keiichi Hara's first film to earn ¥1 billion. I was thinking Miss Hokusai (2015) may have just gotten to the mark, I seem to recall it had some buzz at the time, but I don't see it listed.

And yes, it's not easy getting to ¥1 billion for such a film. Great accomplishment.

Biggest 10th-13th Weekends updated with The First Slam Dunk on them. Didn't realize it had the second biggest 13th weekend ever this past week! Yeah, it has Friday included since Japan moved to 3-day weekends this year, so there's that to consider.

I'll do the Biggest 14th-16th Weekends with Suzume appearing on those later today,

Corpse may I ask, did Oricon chart website just change from top 200 to top 50 for free users?

I assume you're talking about the single (or album?) ranking.
I don't think it's a recent change? It's been a top 50 for as long as I can remember, though admittedly I don't check these rankings often, especially on the free website.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: March 2023 Release Schedule
Super packed March. Nothing really jumps out as a major performer (like ¥4/5 billion, or more), but with so many releases, it should be a pretty strong month.

I assume that Shin Kamen Rider (*probably* the biggest film of the month) was already set for a Saturday release before the change to 3-day weekends at the start of the year. It might be one of the last Saturday openers we see. Frontloaded, or potentially frontloaded, films generally open on Saturday since Friday burns off some weekend demand and lowered their opening weekends. But, with Friday now being included in the weekend earnings, that shouldn't be a factor moving forward.

My Happy Marriage is the most popular romance manga ongoing right now, anime coming in summer as well. Not sure what the LA will do but maybe look out for that one.

Thanks for the info. Being a romance film with a built-in base released just before Spring Break will go a long way at the box office. It's a popular spot for romance films.

Early/Mid-July aside, Early/Mid-March is the best spot for a film that attracts children/families, as well as teens/young adults (primary romance film audience). (Basically any film where the audience comprises of those that'll be out of school for the holidays.) They get the almost two-week boost of Spring Break from ~March 20th into the first couple days of April, and then are usually able to thrive again when Golden Week begins on April 29th.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: March 2023 Release Schedule
Doraemon 42 is looking to open higher than, perhaps, the past four films since 2020. It almost certainly will since Japan has moved to 3-day weekends now, but even Saturday/Sunday might be enough to outopen the most recent films. It won't be a huge jump or return to the franchise highs, but any increase would be welcomed since the franchise has been on a bit of a downward trend. Thinking... ~¥500-500 million ($3.7-4 million) OW.

Everywhere Everything All at Once is doing decent business, I think. Third or fourth place debut, depending on what happens tomorrow. Thinking ~¥175 million ($1.3 million) OW. If it does well at the Oscars (Best Picture), it could have a nice run and reach ¥1 billion (~$7.5/8 million) or more. Japan being its #1 international market is all but locked up either way though.
