Good start for Shan-Chi. It's not a big opening by any means, but it is Disney's first film to come in at #1 in Japan and also their biggest debut since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. (Mostly because theaters have boycotted their Disney+ releases.) And it's right in that standard opening range that most Marvel/DC films find themselves in, and that's pretty much where you'd want to be at given it's as normal as normal can be for the overall Marvel/DC superhero genre. It should be aiming for a total around ¥1.25 billion ($11/12 million) or a bit more, also around the standard finish that many Marvel/DC films wind up finishing.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission had a rough drop, but it also increased 86% last weekend, so this is actually pretty good--it's even on par with/higher than its third weekend gross. And given this hold, as well as the good dailies it had last week, the chances of it reaching ¥3 billion (~$30 million) are high now. Who'd have thought?

Belle continues to hold well, and is either just shy of or may have just surpassed director Mamoru Hosoada's previous highest grossing film, The Boy and the Beast. I have it just ¥20 million shy, so if accurate, it'll become Hosoda's #1 film on Monday or Tuesday.

F9 has been developing pretty solid legs, and whereas it had a 50/50 shot at outgrossing Furious 7 last week, I'd increase those odds by a considerable margin. Not going to call it a lock or guarantee quite yet, but it'll be surprising if it doesn't edge out F7 now to become the second biggest film in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Tokyo Revengers had a crazy good hold, perhaps from a final push, so to speak, from students going to see it as schools start back this week. As long as it doesn't see sharp declines from here as a result of this hold, it just might outgross part one of the Rurouni Kenshine finale to become Warner Bros.'s highest grossing film of 2021.

I'll expand on these films and add a couple more in the weekend analysis with tomorrow's Weekend Actuals.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (09/04-05)
I do want to share this now though so that it's not missed, perhaps, in the analysis of the Weekend Actuals tomorrow:

Shang-Chi actually fell below Black Widow's opening weekend with actuals, and just barely (a mere ¥1.8 million and 1,000 admissions). So, all the "biggest Disney debut since 2019" and "best DC/Marvel debut since Joker in 2019" being shared here (and on social media) was being stated too early. Looked that way with estimates, especially on Friday and Saturday, but the unusual Sunday decline (or not that unusual being the first Sunday before schools started back) prevented it from happening.

Black Widow still holds both those distinctions in the market for Disney. However, Shang-Chi is still Disney's first #1 debut in the market since 2019. (Black Widow debuted in third or fourth.)

The good news is that Shang-Chi is likely to outgross Black Widow though, because most theaters that have decided to show the Disney+ releases (like Black Widow) are still dropping them after just 5 weeks, so their runs are being cut short. Shang-Chi won't suffer from that.

>Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings debuted atop the weekend box-office, becoming Disney's first film since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to debut at #1 in Japan. However, it's not Disney's biggest opener since 2019, having just barely opened below Black Widow from earlier this year.

The latest entry in the the MCU sold a solid 140,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 779 screens, and 196,414 admissions over its first three-days in release. This debut is about inline with the standard or average Marvel/DC release when you exclude all the Spider-Man and Avengers related films. (Might seem odd to exclude them, but they, especially Spider-Man, perform significantly better than other Marvel/DC franchises.) Disney has yet to have a single film earn over ¥1 billion in Japan since the pandemic, setting them behind many other distributors in the market (I believe they're only around 7th or 8th biggest distributor right now), but Shang-Chi should become their first success since 2019 as it aims to finish a little above the milestone.

>My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission had a rough drop following its huge 86% increase last weekend, but its fifth weekend still nearly matched its third weekend before the 4DX expansion. It's grossed almost ¥1 billion more than either of its predecessors now, and is less than 20,000 admissions shy of 2 million.

>Belle held well again, and is now just ¥69 million away from outgrossing The Boy and the Beast, Mamoru Hosoda's previous highest grossing film. It'll take a few more days than I projected over the weekend, but it'll get there either before or over next weekend. Ultimately, it's on track to exceed the ¥6 billion mark.

>F9 has developed good enough legs that its chance of outgrossing Furious 7 to become the second highest grossing film in the Fast and Furious franchise (after The Fate and th Furious) are pretty good. It may take just about its remaining time in theaters to get there, but I expect it'll manage this achievement.

>Tokyo Revengers held exceptionally well in its ninth weekend of release, and if it can keep this up, it could outgross Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final to become Warner Bros.'s highest grossing film of 2021. It's ¥202 million away from this goal, which is certainly doable if its weekends remain strong (weekdays will likely back off a bit now with schools back in session).

In case anyone missed the Demon Slayer news over the weekend, Mugen Train is scheduled to air on September 25th on Fuji TV, and Season 2 is set to premiere in October. If any soul remains in Japan who hasn't seen the movie, this primetime broadcast ahead of Season 2 will give them the opportunity (plus rack up massive ratings).

Season 2 begins where the movie left off, the movie acting as a bridge between Seasons 1 and 2. So check out the movie before watching Season 2 if you've already watched Season 1.

Season 2 will air at 11:15PM in a new block on Fuji TV. It will also be uncensored. There were concerns that airing in primetime on broadcast TV this time could result in some edits or censoring (Red Light District setting + a lot more blood and gore), so I'm presuming the later air time and being uncensored was the compromise. Since the episodes will both air and finish before midnight in this new block, it'll likely still draw a significant audience, while also being a bit of a warning to concerned parents.

No actual air date for Season 2 was announced, but more details (the release date) will be announced on September 25th when Mugen Train airs (likely all throughout its broadcast). But it's presumed to be October 3rd since Fuji TV's statement mentioned "every" Sunday in October. It's also revealed to air through their Winter schedule, meaning it'll be a two-cour season (24-26 episodes).

And for all us non-Japanese residents, Funimation has streaming rights to Season 2 and I'm guessing it'll be apart of their Fall/Winter simulcast schedule.

To me Fuji TV Press only really say that it start Fall/Winter so i wouldn't assume it is 2 cours yet or that it will air in October but they are obviously being vague till Sept 25.

Very curious to see the ratings. I wonder if it will make the weekly top 10 this time.

It's my favorite arc in the story that I've read up to (on volume 21/23, but it's certainty in the climax), so hoping it delivers.

(I'm pretty sure it will, just hoping it wasn't rushed to meet the unprecedented demand.)

And yes, the ratings will be fun to watch, especially the first episode as everyone is going to be tuning in to see what happened after the movie. October 11th is a holiday, so they may schedule the debut on October 10th so that school/work the next day won't be a concern.

Also interested to see the ratings the broadcast of Mugen Train pulls in on Sept. 25th. Really should be targeting close to/over 20%, at least, I'd think. The TV specials on season one last year were doing around 15% or so, if I recall correctly, so I'd set that as the minimum target.

I was doing some research for my grad school class on comparing several movies with extreme content different classification in several countries and when Japan came up like titles for example with extreme content like Hardcore Henry or Spiral have been in most countries restricted to those 18 and above but Japan gave them an R-15. Japan has the G,PG-12, R-15, and R-18 classification. The G, PG-12, and R-15 ratings have been used and been success at the box office but it seems like when seeing those release with an R-18 rating in theaters it is extremely rare and as I mentioned those with extreme content can still get an R-15. Is there a stigma surrounding the R-18 rating in Japan just like in the United States there is a stigma surrounding the NC-17 rating?

Yes.

R-15 is generally the highest rating you'll see a film receive. This rating is the equivalent of an R-18 rating in the U.S. Most R-18 rated films internationally will end up as R-15 rated films in Japan. Films with this rating have strong acts of violence, gore, language, and sexual content. And it varies by case, but bullying and suicides are a problem in Japan, so films depicting either of them in an extreme or glorifying way can often determine which rating they receive in the market too, even if other aspects (like those mentioned) are absent or minor.

*Demon Slayer: Mugen Train was given the R-15 rating for example. There is a lot of blood and violence and such, sure, but there was no sexual content or language. But the suicide moments, even if it was someone taking their life (repeatedly) in a dream scenario, certainly was a big reason it earned the R-15 rating. Not that the rating hurt it in anyway, the franchise and film still transcended demographics to appeal to all age-groups, from daycare children to seniors.

R-18 is basically comparable to NC-17 in the U.S. This rating is usually found on films with extreme sexual content you could likely label as porn by most standards. And films with overly grotesque acts of violence and gore. You don't really see any wide releases, or even limited releases, released with this rating. IF a film would earn this rating, chances are high some changes will be made to get it down to R-15. Not to say R-18 films aren't released, but they'll usually only be in a handful of theaters and not intended to find box office success or anything. A filmmaker or studio isn't making an R-18 rated film with the hopes it'll make them rich.

Also, I don't know the films you mentioned, but I'm betting they have nudity. Nudity tends to earn films higher ratings in most markets versus Japan. Japan is largely fine with nudity, as it's often part of their customs and ways, and just showing naked people on film isn't going to cause hardly any of them to bat an eye. It's not weird or "wrong" for them to be naked around each other, including strangers, in many settings. It's just normal. There are plenty of G/PG-12 films with nudity. Many people in other markets, Western markets in particular, are taken aback by a bare chest or butt or, the horror, genitals, like it's a forbidden image that has to be covered up because...?

It's when sexual acts and whatnot begin where Japan gets more restrictive. Nudity itself is mostly whatever and isn't going to have too much of an impact on a film's rating depending on the context.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission is having a third giveaway this weekend (a "making of" book of the movie) to the first 300,000 moviegoers.

It's very likely to reclaim the #1 spot this weekend (could be on track for almost a 100% increase, or more), its sixth weekend in release, and this event has locked up reaching the ¥3 billion milestone (~$30 million) and then some. It's far exceeded expectations, and who knows, it may end up grossing nearly double its two predecessors combined.

Silver Week is next week too, so that'll help it (and everything else) climb a bit higher still. 2021 isn't one of the years where the days align to allow a 5-day consecutive holiday break, but that weekend and two of the weekdays (national holidays) will be pretty strong.

3 billion is definitely happening now as the new giveaway has given quite the bump. It'll probably also help take out the previous 500k giveaway which is still in theaters for a big chunk, though now I doubt they'll be able to churn out the new 300k giveaway lol. But I guess they don't really care, I assume this giveaway is just to secure 3 billion and it'll achieve that much for sure.

What's interesting to me is 11:15 PM is still considered primetime for Japanese TV?

It isn't. The season 1 rebroadcasts are at 7PM though, while the Mugen Train movie broadcast is at 9PM, and that's what corpse is referring to.

Today, the first part of the five recapped movies broad cast on Fuji TV again. Ufotable surprised viewers with an extra scene at the end of the movie. The new content came from information in the Official Fanbook 1. It is just extra information, not a real spoiler though, so you can feel free to watch it. People went crazy about it on social media hours ago. Viewer ratings will be definitely higher tomorrow when the 2nd part premieres.
https://youtu.be/Jay0H0kFeeE

Here is the English translation for this extra content (from the fanbook) if you don't know Japanese: https://shishi-tls.tumblr.com/post/1893 ... rets-giyuu

On the other hand, Ufotable foreshadows a detail, which only occurs very late in the series. This part is spoiler so I will not discuss. It is funny that they tried to hide Akaza until the last minute but foreshadowed this detail :funny: .

Thanks again, mark!

Working on the Weekend Estimates for this weekend now. They'll be up in a half hour or so.

No major wide openers this weekend, studios opting to release their films over next week's 3-day holiday weekend and Silver Week holiday period instead, so look for the box office to liven up again soon.

>My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission took advantage of the slower weekend, increasing something around 70% or so thanks to its third giveaway event that began on Saturday. This is its second weekend at #1, the first being back in its fourth weekend when it received its 4DX/second giveaway promotion. The third MHA film is very close to the ¥3 billion milestone now, and will exceed the mark in a couple/few days. With the upcoming holiday weekend/week, it's going to receive a bit more of a bump to boost its total, and could wind up reaching ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million). If it would manage to reach ¥3.55 billion, it'll have outgrossed the combined totals of its two predecessors. Pretty crazy result here.

>Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings looks to have enjoyed a decent enough, though not very good hold, on the slightly better end of most Marvel/DC films in their second weekends. Its weekdays left a lot to be desired though, so while this second weekend is decent, it's still showing clear signs of natural frontloading that almost all Marvel/DC films experience. It's going to outgross Black Window at least, likely over Silver Week next week and become Disney's first film to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. (Hint: Keep your films off same-day Disney+, Disney!)

>Belle enjoyed its usual strong hold, this one being a bit better than its average drop, too. It outgrossed The Boy and the Beast to become director Mamoru Hosoda's highest grossing film ahead of its ninth weekend, and is about to exceed the ¥6 billion (~$55 million) milestone now. The biggest film of the summer has yet to leave the weekend top 3. It'll enjoy a healthy Silver Week I'm sure, and then just from playing naturally from there, should be able to finish near the ¥6.5 billion (~$60 million) mark.

>F9: The Fast Saga held very well too, and as a result (as well as nice weekdays), has guaranteed that it'll outgross Furious 7 to become the second highest grossing film in the entire Fast & Furious film franchise. I'm estimating it's right about ¥100 million away from surpassing the seventh film after Sunday, so expect it to achieve this goal either over next weekend, or next week's holiday Monday. It'll still have a bit in the tank from there, too, so could end up finishing with ¥3.7 billion (~$34/35 million) or so, which would be just 9% shy of The Fate of the Furious, the highest grossing film in the franchise.

>The Woman of S.R.I. didn't have a spectacular second weekend or anything, so I normally wouldn't mention a film in this scenario, however... It had monstrous weekdays which were more than double its opening weekend. This means it's skewing pretty much exclusively to an adult audience (30-55 or so) and likely females (from its strength on Wednesday). So its weekends aren't going to account for much of its total, so if its weekdays continue to earn around double or more than its weekends, there is a slight chance it could approach/reach the ¥1 billion milestone. I wouldn't expect it to, but it's not impossible.

>Kagyua-sama: Love is War held great in its fourth weekend, renewing its hopes at reaching/exceeding the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone after it was looking pretty unlikely. And it probably wouldn't get there normally, but Silver Week should go a long way in helping it get there next week.

>Tokyo Revengers continues to post incredible holds late in its run. It's around ¥100 million away from outgrossing Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final to become Warner Bros.'s highest grossing film of the year, which it should achieve over the Silver Week holiday period next week. Can it make a play at ¥4.5 billion (~$41 million)? Possibly. Great run ever since it opened, and has certainly assured that more films will be greenlit to continue adapting the manga/anime for the future.

The bottom of the Top 10 is pretty contested this weekend, so don't be surprised if it looks different with actuals tomorrow. I'm pretty confident that The Method of Repulsing the Dove took 9th, but 10th place could go to Old (which I'm currently estimating), Crayon Shin-chan (single-digit hold this weekend!), or possibly the newest The Prince of Tennis film which held excellent as well (maybe single-digit hold), though being more limited than the others puts it a a slight disadvantage still I think. We'll see tomorrow.

Hi Corpse! A question for you: in your opinion, has Evangelion secured its #1 spot for 2021 or do you think it's possible for another movie to outgross it before the end of the year?
