Two of the Top 10 Highest Grossing Film in Japan Box Office 2021 has got released approval in Mainland China. They have been successfully reviewed by CFA. The two films are Hideaki Anno's Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time and recently released Mamoru Hosoda's Belle. At present, no confirmed release date has been announced. I study to find that the film will release between November 2021-March 2022. I hope a greater success in Mainland more than Japan.

Douban Ratings:
Evangelion 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time: 9.2 (45,505)
Belle: 6.9 (551)

Demon Slayer Mugen Train which was approved back at late Jan 2021 and Theatrical Release plans got scrapped out in March 2021, will no longer have any hopes for Mainland release. Fate Franchise will continue to have VOD release and will avoid any theatrical engagement there.

However, in case of Demon Slayer, there is a good news that recappping episodes of "Mugen Train" Arc will be released in Mainland China starting from October 11, 2021 and "Entertainment District" Arc will be released from December 16, 2021 in the platform "Bilibili".

Belle has terrible ratings in Douban or in other words, less anticipating fans. However, I have to say that EVA has higher ratings than Demon Slayer Mugen Train in the same period (8.6). Although, neither of the films are released in China, but fanbase and ratings speaks louder how the film are been pirated through out China.

Corpse, any estimate for EVA and Belle in Late Fall 2021 release? I am thinking about $30-40M+ for EVA and $3-5M for Belle?

Do you mean predictions for how they'll perform in China? I honestly don't know. I would imagine Evangelion will likely eclipse any previous film since it's been such a long wait and is the finale of the entire franchise (see how much it jumped in Japan). And looking at the rating you posted above (and the number of reviews), I would guess it's a pretty well-known franchise in China, especially given it's from the 90s.

Belle will presumably perform much weaker. I don't really think Hosoda/Studio Chizu are too well known outside of Japan at the moment, so I'd anticipate a gross of something similar, perhaps a little higher, than Hosoda's past couple films?

Also to add to what you can and cannot post that Jack posted, there isn't really any rules or limits here. However, if you post official photos of something (in this thread, specifically), just be sure to link the source/copyright holders above/below it. Years and years back (with the original owner of the site) there were some issues here over this, and while I don't think that'd ever really happen today (our forum has grown significantly smaller), better safe than sorry.

I only ask that you not update the charts that I do on a weekly basis (you've seen them by now). Feel free to post newly released numbers and everything, that's more than welcomed and encouraged (like you did for Detective Conan and Rurouni Kenshin this week), just don't copy/paste my charts and update them. And like they do at Box Office Theory (or did, I haven't gone there in awhile), I don't mind if others copy/paste the charts and such from here somewhere else. But if you do, I'd like you to mention my thread and our forum.

This thread, in particular, continues to see an upward trend in traffic, and I appreciate that many are either finding it now (like last year when Demon Slayer broke the box office and we were shared on Reddit) or are still visiting it years and years later.

This thread had a record 898,000 views in 2020, up from the previous record of 629,000 views in 2019. And 2021? It's already at 853,000 views, so it's going to break the 2020 record with ease. We're going to shatter 1 million views for 2021 because the thread is adding tens of thousands of views a week (33,000 since Friday!) right now. (We're also 7 pages shy of adding 100 new pages this year!)

A lot of former lurkers (some longtime!) have joined over the past year and are still active (thank you!), but there are certainly many more out there that I'd encourage again to join. :)

Note: Entry determined by widest day of a film's opening weekend (typically Saturday).

I have no proof since this list is from 2015 onward (and the last film was in 2015, so only one other film to compare it to), but this is very likely the widest 007 releases ever in the market since the franchise isn't big enough in Japan to demand anything more. Or, it's at least the widest 007 release since the early 1960s.

No Time to Die is also the widest imported release in the market since Star Wars IX back in 2019, and the 6th widest release overall since 2019.

So it certainly has the seating and showtimes to post an impressive opening, so let's see if audiences come out. Remember, the 007 franchise isn't particularly big in Japan, so don't expect anything crazy. But with it being a "finale light" as Craig's last film, it could see a bit of a bump in the market above the franchise average.

Going to plug my TCG Storefront at TCGplayer. Tomorrow, for 6 hours only, the site is having their biggest customer incentive event in their history by giving back 15% in store credit on any amount of money spent during the event. So any Pokémon card collectors here (have a couple Magic cards left too), or reading/lurking, consider checking the event (and my store!) out!

My Storefront
My Feedback (100%!)

I had several hundred cards listed last month, but someone bought a lot of my stock a couple weeks ago so it's a bit low right now (55 cards, I think). However, I just listed several of the rarest Pokémon cards out there (pictures included) tonight in the shop for the special event.

*End Plug*

The State of Emergency has been lifted in every prefecture beginning this weekend, marking the first time since April that no prefecture has been under an SOE!

So all theaters in the formally affected prefectures (which reached either 19 or 21 out of the 47), can stay open after 8pm again. These restrictions have never really greatly impacted the box office, as theaters have countered this a bit by giving films more showings throughout the morning and day to compensate, but some films naturally perform better in the evening and night, so some opening weekends have been limited.

Couldn't tell too much of how this has affected the films in release since Friday was hit with a typhoon, which basically canceled the discount day and renewed evening/night shows, but this weekend should see some big pattern changes. I did notice that most films were way down in the morning/afternoon yesterday versus last week, but quickly recovered come the evening and night with those showings now back (some huge 30-40% swings). So I would expect to see most films being way down in the morning/afternoon for the next 6 days, but recover a ton come the evening/night.

I don't have much time today to really discuss this weekend, but I'll be back later tonight.

I'm estimating that No Time to Die opened around:

~65-70% higher than Casino Royale
~20-25% higher than Spectre
~About on par with Skyfall.
~20-25% lower than Quantum of Solace

QoS recorded the biggest OW in the franchie's history (and only entry to open above ¥500 million), but it had disastrous, near all-time worse legs ever (for a major wide release) due to toxic WOM (a horrid 3.45 multiplier) and is the lowest grossing Daniel Craig film by a considerable amount. It opened more than 2x CR, but finished below it. I believe QoS even grossed less than one or two Bronsan films.

Interestingly, Spectre has the lowest opening weekend of the last 4 films (now 5 films), but it went on to become the highest-grossing with ¥2.96 billion. So the highest opener became the lowest grossing, and the lowest opener became the highest grossing! I'll post the Daniel Craig 007 Box Office History tomorrow.

NTTD is doing extremely well. Belle MX4D is very late. It may/might not revived the screens, lowering my estimates to ¥6.5 billion

Unless there is some sort of giveaway attached to the 4D showings, I don't expect them to do very well at all. But even then, Belle isn't a film that would normally benefit from these showings as I don't think Hosoda or Studio Chizu has a significant enough fanbase to really support them.

Belle is dropping naturally now that we've moved into Fall, and it's already been out for 3 months. Some films receive a 4D expansion weeks (or a month or two) after they open, but not 4 months later... It will probably be at the very bottom of the top 10, but likely outside of the top 10, before the 4D expansion in a few weeks.

Do you have a source for the 4D expansion? I don't have any reason to doubt you, it's just a very unusual decision.

The latest I can recall a film receiving a 4DX/MX4D expansion was Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer back in 2018, which received it 6 months after it opened (its 28th week in release) and for 3-weeks only (it concluded its entire run after that third week). But this was the first Detective Conan film to get these showings, and one of the earliest in general outside of more specific or designed films to have them. So understandable that it expanded to them really late.

Plus, Detective Conan has enough of a core fanbase that would come out again in another format despite the high ticket prices where it made sense. Zero the Enforcer had been well out of the Top 10 for months at that point, and was only in a few theaters at the time, but it managed to resurface back inside the Top 10 for all 3 of its 3 week 4D run.

Not expecting Belle to perform as well with its 4 month post-opening 4D expansion, but we'll see what happens.

Corpse, I totally agree with you.
So far, sadly, we still do not have any films at 5, 8, 9 billion. I do not think we will have any. (Year is already ending per Oricon/Eiren)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: James Bond Box Office History
James Bond (Daniel Craig) - Box Office History (2006-2021)

OPENINGS:
¥585.5 million ($6.57 million) / 433,000 admissions - 007: Quantum of Solace (2009)
¥454.6 million ($5.56 million) / 398,754 admissions - 007: Skyfall (2012)
¥430.7 million ($3.88 million) / 281,676 admissions - 007: No Time to Die (2021)
¥362.2 million ($2.95 million) / 262,663 admissions - 007: Spectre (2015)
¥270.5 million ($2.34 million) / 212,335 admissions - 007: Casino Royale (2006)

And here is how the opening weekend admissions compare when Friday and previews are included: (You're welcome, mark. :mer: )

Full Opening Weekend Admissions (Friday and/or previews included):
433,000 (3-day plus 3-days of previews)- Quantum of Solace
421,995 (3-day) - No Time to Die
398,754 (2-day) - Skyfall (opened on the traditional Saturday)
346,701 (3-day) - Spectre
309,000 (3-day) - Casino Royale

TOTALS:
¥2.96 billion ($24.5 million) / 2.25 million admissions - 007: Spectre (2015)
¥2.75 billion ($31.6 million) / 2.20 million admissions - 007: Skyfall (2012)
¥2.21 billion ($18.5 million) / 1.76 million admissions - 007: Casino Royale (2006)
¥1.98 billion ($21.1 million) / 1.55 million admissions - 007: Quantum of Solace (2009)

Note: Quantum of Solace had previews included (¥271,555,100) in its opening weekend. (This was common practice between 2000-2009.) Previews haven't been included in opening weekends since Eiren ruled against them in 2010 (studios, mostly Warner Bros., were abusing them and fudging the weekend rankings), and for the past 10+ years, films don't really receive previews anymore.

October is the weakest month in Japan (ironic, I know, since Demon Slayer totally obliterated every record last year), so this is really good for No Time to Die to post this number for the time of year.

>007: No Time to Die got October off to a strong start, earning the 9th Biggest Opening Weekend for the month of October on record. The final Daniel Craig entry in the James Bond franchise sold 281,676 admissions over the weekend frame across 762 screens, and sold 421,995 admissions since Friday (discount day). The weekend itself was the third highest among the Daniel Craig 007 films, while the 3-day total was the second highest (or even the highest if you exclude Quantum of Solance's previews).

So not really a breakout above the franchise's standard debuts, but it was right around the series' best openings. It'll be trying to outgross Spectre to become Daniel Craig's highest grossing 007 film, but that'll be a bit difficult since Spectre had great legs. I'm going to predict it'll behave more closely to Skyfall, and since its opening was comparable, I'm expecting it'll finish with around the same total of ¥2.75 billion (~$25 million) or so. But again, it *could* have better legs than Skyfall and worse legs than Spectre and become the highest grossing Craig release. We'll probably have a good idea after next week.

>Masquerade Night is performing well as expected and is still aiming for a total around ¥4 billion (~$36 million). ¥3.5 billion (~$32 million) is about locked up, but that extra ¥500 million will require a couple better holds over the next week or two. It has a spot in the Top 10 of 2021 pretty much guaranteed either way though, so another big win for Toho.

>In the Wake debuted in third place, selling 95,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 348 screens, and sold 139,338 admissions since Friday (a discount day). This is more or less a standard opening for an average film this time of year, so nothing to really discuss here. It'll be on track for around ¥750 million ($6.5-7 million) or so with a standard performance.

>The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It managed to debut inside the Top 5, a rare feat for an imported horror film. Granted, it only did so since the bottom half of the Top 10 is pretty weak right now, but impressive accomplishment either way. The film sold 43,982 admissions over its first three days of release on 275 screens.

>Belle is starting to slow down now that we're a couple weeks into the Fall season. Achieving 12 weeks in the Top 10 (after being in the Top 3 for 10 weeks and Top 4 for 11 weeks) is very impressive though, and it'll probably add at least one more week to that total. It has an unusually late--very, very late--4DX expansion in a few weeks, so we'll have to see what that does for it, but right now, expect a total around ¥6.5 billion (~$59/60 million).

>My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission is holding on much better than I would have expected now that we're in October, perhaps due to the last remaining fans who haven't gotten ahold of the giveaways from earlier in its run. The third film in the MHA franchise has now earned 92.6% of the combined grosses of its two predecessors.

Is it just me, but it feels so strange to see a big movie open day-and-date with Europe and ahead of the U.S. release...

Indeed. The last one I can remember is Spider-Man: Homecoming, but I think it opened in Japan ahead of both Europe and the U.S.. The last one before it... The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I think! :funny:

I do not like any marvels other than SpiderMan. I guess it's Sony. BTW, I never expected Endgame to perform so low here. If I am not wrong, James Cameron's Titanic once became the all time highest grossing film until Spirited Away dethroned.

I was expecting something like 10-15 billion yen for Endgame. Well, it never happened
