Huh it actually still increased on sunday, I guess giveaway effect was really low here? Interesting. Good for it I guess.

How much is a 4DX ticket compared to a standard one?

4DX tickets carry a ¥1200 surcharge in addition to whatever you payed for the admission. So, if you bought a general admission (¥1900), it'd be ¥4100 (the highest ticket possible except for premium/luxury box seating). If you're a college or high school student, it'd cost you ¥2700 instead (at most places). The cheapest option available would be ¥2200 (every admission is at least ¥1000).

Standard Tickets:
¥1900 - General
¥1500 - College
¥1000-1500 - High School Student
¥1200 - Seniors
¥1000 - Age 3 through Jr. High Student
¥1000 - Disabled

Premium Tickets:
¥2200-3100 - 4DX/MX4D (¥1200 surcharge)
¥1600-2500 - IMAX (¥600 surcharge)
¥1500-2400 - Dolby Cinema (¥500 surcharge)
¥1400-2300 - 3D (¥400 surcharge)
¥1200-2100 - Dolby ATMOS (¥200 surcharge)

Special Tickets:
¥4000-4900 - Premier Luxury Seating (¥3000 surcharge)
¥2000-2900 - Premier Box Seating (¥1000 surcharge)
¥1400 - Late-Showings (Showings after 8pm generally)
¥1200 - Discount Days (1st of the Month or Day of the Week/Month per chain)
¥1200 - Female Patrons on Wednesdays (Depending on location)

This is roughly what you see at most major chains.

Wouldn't it be 2200-3100 if it's a 1200 surcharge?

Actuals out yet?

Edit: Well I found this from Oricon

"Dragon Ball Super Super Hero" continued in 2nd place as in the previous week, mobilizing 166,000 people and raising revenue of 232 million yen in 2 days on Saturday and Sunday, and cumulative mobilization of 1.21 million people, exceeding 1.6 billion yen.

That's correct. Good -23% decline. ¥2.5 billion is probably back to being 50/50 (much more likely than after its second week). A lot depends on this current week now. The third weekend will likely see a pretty big drop, probably up to/over 40% I suspect, so getting as close to ¥2 billion by next Sunday (July 3rd) as it can is key because it'll begin to shred seating/showings when the many July releases roll out.

Top Gun: Maverick stands at ¥6,744,549,220 ($51.1 million) / 4,313,060 admissions after a ¥505,305,890 ($3.7 million) / 296,000 admissions (-15%) fifth weekend. I feel good that I predicted it practically dead-on (99.9%) this entire week. Being off by a decent bit in that fourth week did not feel good. ;-)

Shin Ultraman broke ¥4 billion (¥4,027,500,850) after seven weeks. It'll pass Spider-Man: No Way Home (¥4.17 billion) to climb one more spot up the 2022 Yearly Chart in a couple weeks.

Also, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween broke ¥9 billion (¥9,029,251,300) after its eleventh weekend. No admissions yet, but should be just shy of 6.5 million (~6.48 million). It's the third film in the franchise to reach this milestone, and it's probably locked to outgross Zero the Enforcer (¥9.18 billion) to become the second highest-grossing film in the franchise.

So not all actuals are released at once?

Or is there not going to be an actual for Super Hero?

It'll be released in ~10 hours from this post.

Select numbers (rounded if not an actual) are released Monday afternoon in Japan (for media outlets), but full actuals aren't until Tuesday morning.

EDIT: ¥1,639,203,960 ($12.2 million) is the actual for Super Hero (missed it) / 1.21 million admissions. The weekend figure will be released in ~10 hours, but it'll be between ¥231.5-232.4 million ($1.71 or 1.72 million) / 166,000 admissions since the reported figure for the media outlets was ¥232 million.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Summer 2022 (July/August) Release Sche
So, Top Gun: Maverick… is it going to reach ¥10 billion? The numbers suggest it's on track to do just that, and while I *believe* it will, I'm going to remain cautious and hold back on it still. Why? Well, it reminds me of Aladdin. Not a good comparison in terms of genre or anything, but they've behaved similarly (weekends) so far.

Both films had similar release dates (Top Gun end of May, Aladdin start of June), and their second-fifth weekend holds were outstanding. If you looked at Aladdin after week 5 while it was playing out (and eve now), you'd think it was going to finish higher than the ¥12.16 billion it finished with. Not that that's bad by any means, it's the complete opposite, it was incredible as was its overall run. It just began to fall fairly hard in July/August when all the competition began eating away at its seating/showings.

I don't think Top Gun will fall as hard as Aladdin did when it hit mid-July and onward, but it's certainly something to consider, because, as usual, mid-July through mid-August is very packed again this year.

Here are their weekend charts:

Aladdin (2019):
¥1.122 billion ($10.3 million), 0, ¥1.40 billion ($12.9 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥1.097 billion ($10.1 million), -02%, ¥3.58 billion ($33.0 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥995.9 million ($9.3 million), -09%, ¥5.52 billion ($50.9 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥879.2 million ($8.1 million), -12%, ¥7.22 billion ($66.6 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥698.9 million ($6.5 million), -20%, ¥8.56 billion ($79.0 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥491.1 million ($4.5 million), -30%, ¥9.58 billion ($88.3 million) - Aladdin (2019) *Mid-July; Heavy Competition Begins*
¥287.7 million ($2.7 million), -41%, ¥10.42 billion ($96.0 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥209.9 million ($1.9 million), -27%, ¥10.95 billion ($100.8 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥127.3 million ($1.2 million), -39%, ¥11.36 billion ($104.7 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥80.2 million ($754,000), -29%, ¥11.63 billion($107.1 million) - Aladdin (2019)
¥64.1 million ($602,000), -20%, ¥11.90 billion ($109.6 million) - Aladdin (2019)

Top Gun: Maverick:
¥824.7 million ($6.5 million), 0, ¥1.16 billion ($9.1 million) - Top Gun: Maverick (0222)
¥757.4 million ($5.8 million), -08%, ¥2.89 billion ($22.4 million) - Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
¥669.1 million ($5.0 million), -12%, ¥4.37 billion ($33.5 million) - Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
¥594.3 million ($4.5 million), -11%, ¥5.65 billion ($43.0 million) - Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
¥505.3 million ($3.7 million), -15%, ¥6.74 billion ($51.1 million) - Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

NOTE: This isn't to compare their earnings, just to see if Top Gun will follow a similar path in terms of its decline when it reaches mid-July since Aladdin had equally impressive holds until then with a similar release date. There are very few comparisons since May/June rarely see big films open in them.

Any Buzz for Lightyear in Japan?

What about the release window? I know the relationship between theattres and Disney has not been good.
With just 45 days the movie barely reaches the Obon festival by the end i think.
I just hope theuy can give it al least 60 days or so...

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Summer 2022 (July/August) Release Sche
Pixar is usually a safe bet to put up good numbers in Japan, but I'm not sure here. There is a lot riding on this one though. It's the FIRST Disney Animation film (Pixar or otherwise) to get a proper release in Japan since 2019. All their films since Frozen II either weren't released (Soul, Luca, Turning Red), or were boycotted (Onward, Raya, Encanto) by theaters either before/during their runs because they were on/went to Disney+.

The problem is that the release window will likely go off the US release, meaning it'd probably miss Obon Festival entirely (not to mention half of Summer Vacation). So a 45 day would cause it to miss basically 2/3 of Summer Vacation and all of Obon Festival. And even a 60 day window means it barely reaches Obon Festival and wouldn't benefit much from it, and then miss out on the final 2-3 weeks of Summer Vacation.

So, if it goes to Disney+ in 45/60 days from the US release, it'd only be playing for like 30/40 days in Japan (not nearly enough time, especially in summer) before theaters dropped it.

I'm hoping that they'll make an exception here and keep it off Disney+ until at least the end of August/beginning of September, but I don't see Disney keeping it off for that long (from the US date). We'll see how theaters react. Dr. Strange 2 was boycotted and dropped by theaters the weekend before it went on Disney+ last week, meaning theaters are still boycotting films that go to streaming (Disney+).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Summer 2022 (July/August) Release Sche
Personally... I think Disney, if they're going to be continuing to support Disney+ by releasing theatrical release on the platform after 45/60 days, should give up distribution rights of their films to a Japan distributor (probably Toho, as the biggest, which would create another subsidiary division like they did for Universal and Paramount which both sold their rights to Toho), because their current situation isn't working... at all.

This would prevent their films from going to Disney+ in Japan while they're in theaters because Japanese distributors don't release films on streaming while they're still in theaters, and theaters boycott those (basically just Disney) that practice it. This is how Universal and Paramount films are performing well in the market--they don't go to streaming since Toho (though their subsidiary distributors) releases them.

I say this because every other studio except Disney is doing perfectly fine in Japan, and have been doing fine since 2020. It's exclusively a Disney problem. Disney is the only one that continues to struggle, and it's so bad, that they're one of the weakest distributors in the market now (they've been in like ~7th place since 2020) after being second only to Toho for over a decade. I can't imagine they're making any (theatrical) profit in the market now. Only 2 (TWO!) of their films have earned more than ¥1 billion in 2.5 years.

Disney, aside from Warner Bros. and Sony (but both WB and Sony have a Japanese film studio/industry that makes local films and also releases Hollywood films, so they don't really count), is the only Western distributor that still releases their own films in Japan. Universal films are handled by Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) and Paramount films are handled by Towa Pictures (another subsidiary of Toho), as mentioned above. And independent distributors like Gaga, Nikkatsu, etc. handle smaller Hollywood/imported films by smaller distributors.

All the openers (four in the Top 10 this weekend) still have outstanding weekend actuals (Sat-Sun), so I'm going to hold off until tomorrow for them. I usually don't mind posting them on Monday if one or two films are pending, but 40% of the Top 10 is a little much.

I already have everything prepared to post, so it won't take long tomorrow.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (06/25-26)
Going ahead and posting this since Baby Broker's (rounded) weekend actual came in and was the only opener above ¥100 million to make it onto the 2022 charts.

Weekend Actuals (06/25-26)
01 (01) ¥505,305,890 ($3.74 million), -15%, ¥6,744,549,220 ($51.1 million), Top Gun: Maverick (Towa Pictures) WK5

03 (---) ¥122,000,000 ($901,000), 0, ¥169,350,650 ($1.3 million), Baby Broker (Gaga) NEW
04 (03) ¥x98,232,800 ($730,000), -26%, ¥4,027,500,850 ($31.1 million), Shin Ultraman (Toho) WK7
05 (---) ¥x85,000,000 ($632,000), 0, ¥100,263,960 ($0.7 million), Anpanman: Dororin and the Transforming Carnival (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) NEW
06 (04) ¥x69,574,500 ($517,000, -39%, ¥1,776,392,600 ($13.7 million), The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie (Pony Canyon) WK6
07 (---) ¥x65,000,000 ($480,000), 0, ¥x97,374,480 ($0.7 million), The Lost City (Towa Pictures) NEW
08 (---) ¥x65,000,000 ($480,000), 0, ¥x98,990,480 ($0.7 million), Fullmetal Alchemist: The Last Transmutation (Warner Bros.) NEW
09 (05) ¥x61,025,800 ($453,000), -39%, ¥322,051,300 ($2.4 million), The Hound of Baskervilles: Sherlock the Movie (Toho) WK2
10 (08) ¥x54,626,750 ($406,000), -22%, ¥9,029,251,300 ($70.3 million), Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween (Toho) WK11

>Top Gun: Maverick easily holds onto the top spot in its fifth weekend, giving it four non-consecutive weeks at #1 now. It has sold 4,313,060 admissions after five weeks, adding another 296,000 over the weekend frame. It looks like it's on pace to reach the ¥10 billion mark, and I think it will, but I don't want to predict it yet because if it finishes with ¥9 billion+, it might look "disappointing" when it's the complete opposite.

The reason I'm cautious is because there are some example of films (Aladdin being the biggest example) opening in late May/early June having stellar holds for the first five or six weeks, but once they reach July, especially mid-July, they begin to drop harder. We might be seeing the first signs of this now as the dailies are down 20-30% so far this week on Monday/Tuesday, which have been its biggest declines over the weekdays so far. If it drops 25-30% this upcoming weekend too, that'd put ¥10 billion in doubt. So, we'll still need to wait and see for a bit to get a clearer picture on where it may wind up.

>Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero enjoyed a good third weekend hold thanks to its 4DX/MX4D expansion and giveaway event. It's sold 1.21 million admissions after three weeks in release. The goal remains ¥2.5 billion, and if it can avoid a 40%+ drop this upcoming weekend, I think there's at least a fair chance it can get there.

>Baby Broker debuted in third place, selling 86,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 316 screens, and 122,636 admissions over its first three-days in release. Not exactly exciting, but Gaga getting a film above ¥100 million over the weekend (and ¥169 million over the three-day) is pretty good.

>Shin Ultraman continues to hold pretty well lately, and broke the ¥4 billion mark over its seventh weekend while admissions reached 2,696,807. It's a lock to outgross Spider-Man: No Way Home (¥4.17 billion) now to crack the Top 5 of 2022, and while it probably won't stay there very long when some of July/August releases knock it out, it's in a good position to stay in the Top 10 of 2022 I believe. Expect a finish around ¥4.3/4.4 billion.

>Anpanman: Dororin and the Transforming Carnival, the 33rd film in the franchise, rounds out the Top 5 in its debut. Its weekend figure is an estimate, but it sold 83,365 admissions over its first three-days to just crack ¥100 million over its 3-day. Eiga reports its 3-day is 43% better than last year's film, so nice recovery there.

>The Lost City and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Last Transmutation are both estimated for the weekend, but their 3-day totals above are accurate. The former sold 72,739 admissions in its first three days on 327 screens, while the latter sold 72,504 admissions on 346 screens. The Lost City is only ranked higher since it took 7th in admissions over the weekend frame. I'll update both films tomorrow.

>Finally, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween managed to hold onto the Top 10, achieving an eleventh weekend there. Its admissions are up to 6,478,540. Its late legs have been quite notable, and as mentioned, it's on track to outgross Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (¥9.18 billion) to become the second highest grossing film in the franchise.

Such a downward trend. A clear sign that Japan does not care for Hollywood Godzilla productions, lol.

I want to wait another day (at least ~12 hours) to check sales before saying Lightyear is going to bomb, but it's looking awfully likely.

Theaters have given it their biggest screen(s) and it has a lot of showings, as you'd expect for a major Disney/Pixar release, so they they could be spread out, but I don't even think that's the case as pretty much every showing I checked at many of the busiest locations for Friday and Saturday only have 10-20 (or a little more) seats sold right now.

Very dire sign for Disney animation in the market, which used to be their strongest (or one of them). This is their first proper theatrical release since 2019 (everything else wasn't released or faced boycotts due to Disney+). Could be another Brave. And if that happens, Disney's 2022 will be their third consecutive dead year in Japan with zero hits.

Hi. So I've come across this which is of interest.

https://i.imgur.com/gWooj7U.jpeg

It's a brochure for Path to Power it seems that includes a bunch of information. Apparently the #1 and #2 in the green box says that movies 1-16 have sold 50 million tickets and earned ¥40 billion.

It then lists all the movies with numbers for 4 bullet points which appears to be

Release date
Net gross
Ticket sales
Home video sales

Now that net gross matches what they have on Eiren but to an extent.

http://www.eiren.org/toukei/1991.html

Lord Slug and Cooler's Revenge are listed there at making ¥1.3 billion and ¥1.4 billion which the brochure says. Next year The Return of Cooler is the same but then there's a difference with Super Android 13 where Eiren has it at ¥1.5 billion but the brochure says ¥1.45 billion.

However for the 1993 films Eiren has the Broly and Bojack movies at ¥1.37 billion and ¥1.31 billion while the brochure instead has them at ¥1.45 billion and ¥1.35 billion which is more.

Broly Second Coming is the same. Bio-Broly a bit higher on the brochure. Fusion Reborn a bit lower on the brochure. Wrath of the Dragon is on the brochure at ¥1 billion but isn't mentioned on Eiren.

So I'm wondering which is the right figure here and why there's a disparity between the two when it was the same for the first few movies.

Considering its performance in the rest of the world I guess it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if Japan added to the pile of countries where the film bombed. A shame, but alas...

JJK 0 is apparently already at 50K attendance in India, this is pretty big for non English foreign movies. https://animehunch.com/jujutsu-kaisen-0 ... -releases/
