Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (06/09-11); Chart Updated
Spider-Verse 2 behaved just like a normal CBM with its daily patterns, but it's still a very nice jump over the original (+70-80% over the 3-day). Just not as high as I was expecting when I was checking the presales ahead of the weekend, that's my bad. I should have factored in how the fewer number of showings/seats than a bigger tentpole normally receives would, naturally, make the showings it had look busier.

Estimating between ¥425-450 million ($3-3.2 million) for it, which should be enough to debut at #1 I think. If it continues to behave like a regular CBM, it'll be aiming for ¥1.5 billion ($11 million), which would be an 80% increase or so over the original. And that's fine... but I'm hoping it can expand a bit more with casual moviegoers and get closer to ¥2 billion.

The Little Mermaid is very close though, as I'm estimating its second weekend is around ¥415-420 million ($3 million). And as mentioned, this is a hefty drop around 40%. Second weekend holds are usually some of the best in a film's run in Japan, so definitely not good news. But this also isn't shocking, unfortunately. Disney films have become some of the most frontloaded in Japan, which can also be linked to Disney+. The most interested turn out to see them in the first week or two, but then they kinda collapse afterward as everyone else is perfectly fine waiting a few months to stream them. Disney hasn't had a blockbuster in almost 4 years now, and they also haven't had a leggy film either.

The Flash debuts in fourth place it appears, as Mario looks to have placed third. Estimating around ¥240 million ($1.7 million) for it opening weekend. Will probably fight to finish with ¥700 million ($5 million).

Rock bottom for Disney would be if Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3 miss ¥5 billion as well. That would be truly dire. But maybe they have enough time to turn things around by then.

Frozen is so huge in Japan I wouldn't worry about that. Also Toy Story 5. And Zootopia 2. It's all the other movies that I'm concerned about.

The Little Mermaid isn't going to come close to ¥5 billion after that poor second weekend hold, and if it doesn't recover almost immediately, is probably going to top out around ¥3 billion... The opening weekend was decent, but the total is looking to be borderline disastrous.

That's another thing... Some Disney films have managed decent/good openings, but their legs have been very poor (among the worst in the market now) and they end up with a disappointing/bomb-worthy total. As I said the other day (and many times before), it's like those with the most interest are mostly coming out for the opening weekend/week, but few others are interested afterward and repeats are basically non-existent, so they drop and drop and end their runs in under two months now.

This is, once again, a Disney exclusive problem in Japan, and it's gotta be because of Disney+.

If the big sequels mentioned above opened today, I don't think they'd avoid the same fate every Disney film is facing in the market right now. Their release dates are still unknown, I think, and probably a minimum of 2+ years away, so there's time to change their strategy in the market. They've gone 3.5 years (going to be 4 years+ if Indiana Jones also fails) so far without any hits though... can they go another 2 or 3 years before those films open?

The Japan box-office can still do well with Disney falling off like this, local films make up 60/65% or more of its business, but Disney faltering also keeps it from achieving the heights of the past since Disney was the second biggest distributor for over a decade and has since fallen out of the top 5 (7th I believe) for what's about to be four-consecutive years.

But I don't expect Little Mermaid to be top the chart for 2 weekends, there's a life under the sea after all. And I just check Japan release schedule for this upcoming weekend and it might have a chance to top that too.

The best solution is probably just to explicitly advertise the Disney+ date for movies far in advance (online, on the app, etc) so people aren't left wondering if they should just wait it out. If they see "Coming to Disney+ next year!", I think that would attract a good number of those subscribers back into theaters. But as mentioned before, it would have to be something like a year or more because Japanese audiences do not mind waiting a long time to see a movie in theaters.

Somehow, I doubt many people would cancel Disney+ because of this. They still get to see new movies for free, but they will have to wait until the theatrical run is long over. The initial transition might be a bit rough, but there would still be a new movie dropping on Disney+ every few months once they built up a backlog of new releases.

I just notice that a lot of people watching Black Clover movie, which streaming in Netflix simultaneously with release in Japanese cinema, however it failed to enter the weekend's top ten chart. That means profitability is not measured by box office number anymore. A movie can still be successful even if no one go to the theater to watch it.

I notice that Grand Cinema Sunshine in Toshima Tokyo, which has Japan's biggest IMAX, usually shows subtitled shows, not dubbed shows. Even for Spider-Verse.

Maybe I'll give the place a visit I see Tokyo.

Where is its profitability coming from? Because it's certainly not from Netflix which just paid the flat licensing fee and that's it. All this says is that people would rather watch it for free at home then buy it in theaters.

After seeing Elemental, I'm reasonably confident it will succeed in Japan.

It's showing signs of breaking out in South Korea, which is a good sign. And in my opinion the movie hits some of the same notes as Zootopia, which was also a big hit in Japan.

I'm not so sure. The issue isn't a sudden lack of interest in Disney films in recent years, it's that the majority of audiences in Japan now prefer to wait and watch for free on Disney+. Unless the WOM is so good that it screams must-see in theaters, I think Elemental will still struggle to hit ¥5 billion.

According to some they are dropping Elemental on D+ as early as by September. A August release for Elemental won't help and most probably will be in par with LightYear numbers or best with Encanto. Usually shouldn't keep hopes at all as all of the Disney Release are just disappointing.

Even if that is so it's going to have a full month to make money. I think it's more likely to make more than Encanto ($6.7 million) on its opening weekend than not beat it at all.

Lightyear made $9.0 million in Japan... don't know how the exchange rate works out for that though.

Anyways, it will easily, easily pass both hurdles. I'm genuinely curious if it will best ¥5.0 billion.
