For a few directors, yeah, I'd come out blind.

For the poll, I feel like the most important promotional material in present age is the reception, either from critic's reviews (Rotten Tomatoes/MetaCritic) or verified audience score (CinemaScore/...) or awards (from organizations or film festivals), I can risk watch some movies without watching any trailer if I know beforehand that it has good ratings, or an award-winning kind.

Now back to Box-Office, the First Slam Dunk now has 10 million admissions!
And Top Gun Maverick somehow push itself to 13.72 billion yen much quicker than 13.71 milestone.

Yes for directors if they have consistently good movies like for example Tarantino. For international release like US for example "How Do You Live" obviously would course have to have additional marketing more than a poster. I love the fact that Slam Dunk has hit 10 million.

And yeah! Big milestone for Slam Dunk. 10 million admissions! It took literally half a year (in the top 10 again this weekend too, week 27), but it wasn't really even seen as a possible result for the first couple/few months of release, so better late than never! The last 3 months of its release have been way more impressive than the first 3 months.

I think it hit the mark on Saturday (Day 183), but let me double check before I add it to the chart.

And correct, Top Gun: Maverick got another update this week. I assume it must have been at like ¥13.715-13.719 billion last week or something to get that ¥13.72 billion update this week. And it celebrated its full year in theaters last week too.

That is so absurd. I was going to assume it was a typo, then saw it mentioned again in an article this week. Princess Mononoke sounds like it was their most profitable film, and then they used the money from it on Spirited Away's marketing.

And it honestly seems like Ghibli was always on the cusp of being one film away from having to shutter their film production department until they did after 2013. The ¥1 billion budgets for the early 90s films was very high and a risk themselves. It's still risky to give films a ¥1 billion budget today. If one or both didn't perform well, that certainly would have hit the studio hard and possibly complicated Princess Mononoke's production.

And spending ¥10 billion on marketing for Spirited Away??? Combined with the budget, they made very little profit on it despite it being the biggest film of all-time from 2001-2020. In fact, it probably barely broke even!

Looking back, it seemed that almost all their films, despite most of them grossing a LOT (Miyazaki especially) were just barely breaking even or pulling a small profit due to high budgets and/or marketing until they began losing a lot of money and closed their film production.

In short: Studio Ghibli never really operated from a business/profit aspect in mind. They were taking it one film at a time, basically, and any one film had the potential to end them until the box back-to-back losses from Tales of Princess Kaguya and Wind Rises did in 2013.

Eh... the first one didn't even gross ¥1 billion (just 1/4 of the lowest grossing live-action films). Maybe it found an audience on home video, but I have doubts since that's tough for a Western comic book movie which already have their relatively niche established audience set in stone already.

Perhaps the big box office results in the US and in other markets can help generate some interest in Across the Spider-Verse, or at least get fans of Spider-Man (Peter Parker's version) himself (by far the most popular and most successful comic book hero / film franchise in Japan) to come out, but I wouldn't expect it to do live-action Spider-Man numbers for instance.

Hoping that it can cross ¥1 billion, and then we'll see what happens from there.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Spider Man Box Office History
Here is Spider-Man's BO History. Some important notes here:

>Spider-Man (2002) is now the ONLY Western comic book movie in Japan's Top 100 Grossing Films. It currently ranks #92, so should stay there for a couple/few more years, but it'll be bumped out relatively soon.

>The Original Trilogy remain the ONLY Western comic book movies to ever open above ¥1 billion in Japan. To this day, Spider-Man (2002) still holds the record for Biggest OW for a Western cbm in revenue, while Spider-Man 3 (2007) holds the admissions record.

>The OT also still hold the Top 3 spots on the Highest-Grossing Western comic book movie chart. And like the OW charts, the original holds the top spot in revenue, while the third holds the top spot in admissions.

Spider-Man Box Office History (2002-):

OPENINGS:
¥1.226 billion ($9.6 million) / 855,000 - Spider-Man (2002)
¥1.208 billion ($10.1 million) / 921,314 - Spider-Man 3 (2007)
¥1.084 billion ($10.0 million) / 800,000 - Spider-Man 2 (2004)
¥905.0 million ($7.9 million) / 584,000 - Spider-Man: No Way Home (2022)
¥698.6 million ($6.5 million) / 460,340 - Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
¥580.9 million ($7.4 million) / 426,160 - The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

In response to the poll, I've been to a sneak preview a few times. It's kind of fun to go into a film as a complete surprise.

I kind of did see a film without knowing the plot or cast and having not seen trailers or photos...just a poster, and it was Drive, which is a fucking masterpiece. So yeah I'm down for that. It certainly reduces expectations, but with regards to the poll what would you be seeing the film based on? It's basically a pot luck screening? Don't know if I'd pay for that, to be honest.

Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) is releasing his final film, "How Do You Live?", next month, and he's not releasing any information on it besides the title. No plot summary, no trailers, no images, no posters*, no casting, nada. The only thing we have on it is a teaser poster* released last year that gives nothing away.

This is all we've gotten and all we'll get. The title also gives nothing away. It's based on a book from the 1930s (at least taking its title), but Miyazaki has said it's nothing like the book now. I think he just look its question of a title and/or theme and made a film based on that.

Any idea if the three SPIDER-MAN movies cut together from the TV series made it to theaters in Japan as well? The three movies did okay in Germany back in 1978-81...

Well, in that case then yes I would go and see a film like that - you have a poster, you know the director, and you know the studio. That's kind of enough for me depending on whether I liked the director's previous work. But then only a reputable director would even attempt this.

I watch Across the Spider-Verse and I'm quite optimistic that it'll break a billion barrier in Japan, which is quite an easy thing to do, even if Into the Spider-Verse failed at that.
