>Suzume delivers a massive second weekend, the tenth biggest ever, selling an additional 829,000 admissions over the weekend, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 2,995,808 after ten days. Everything is pointing to a long run, especially after the Wednesday it just had (its biggest single day yet!), so I think we can up the goal to ¥15 billion / 11 million admissions. Now, this goal will likely go unchanged for most of its run, but let's go ahead and aim really high vs likely edging it up from ¥12b to ¥13b, etc.

>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever saw a huge decline in its second weekend, but this is just routine for Marvel/DC films in the market. Let's keep the goal at ¥1.5 billion, but I'm not expecting it to get there.

>One Piece Film Red might be slowing down after sixteen weeks, but I haven't checked if Toei has more planned for it yet. If they don't, it should finish around ~¥18.6/18.7 billion and ~13.5 million admissions.

None of the openers performed well, as expected for this time of year, so if anyone is curious on any of them let me know and I can share their admissions. Just know they're largely disappointments. (November is *usually* a dumping month.)

After doing some research, it appears that Suzume set a new Wednesday record! This puts it comfortably above ¥5 billion on its 13th day in release, too. I'm estimating a whopping ~¥725 million ($5.2 million) and ~555,000 admissions for the day (its 13th day in release).

Its second Wednesday is its biggest single day to date, and it beat Demon Slayer's first Wednesday (~¥635m / 505,000 admissions) record.

And it got to the milestone one day before Shinkai's two previous films, Weathering With You and Your Name. (both at 14 days). So, certainly looking good!

I was a little iffy doing a Daily Tracker here. It's a huge film, obviously, and locked in reaching the ¥10 billion milestone after its opening weekend, but it was too early to say how much higher it could go. Well, given the solid dailies, great second weekend hold, and that second Wednesday (clearly shows a LOT of interest when people are able to see it, like on a holiday), I think the film has earned itself the status of being closely tracked. I don't know if it'll reach ¥15 billion, too early, but I'm pretty confident it'll at least get closer to that milestone than ¥10 billion.

Also! That massive second Wednesday set an all new Wednesday record.

This film is going to be really, really big when the New Year holiday period rolls around based on that Wednesday too (its only holiday until New Year). If you recall, Your Name. (which opened in August back in 2016), had a huge New Year boost since its release date had limited holidays until that point. So, despite being out for 4 months, it did huge numbers (returning to #1) over its first major holiday frame since many more people finally had a chance to see it (a lot of Japanese only have free time during holidays).

Does the World Cup have any impact on the Japanese box office like it does in Europe and South America? Japan could potentially go quite far this time around, given their performance against Germany.

I've never noticed it in recent years, but if Japan has a strong team and can go far, I suppose it could have a bit of an impact.

However, I don't even recall anything with the Olympics last year. So I wouldn't expect anything really noticeable unless they make it to the finals, perhaps.

It's funny you mentioned this now because I just finished reading how the uniforms for Japan's team were created in collaboration with the author of Blue Lock (soccer manga/anime).

Corpse you mentioned in this forum that Japan aging population has an effect on the box office of kid/family films like for example of the Doraemon movies. This year latest entry in the series grossed ¥2.69 billion, but will each future Doraemon movie decline even further and because of that is there a possibility that years in the future one of them would gross below ¥1 billion and thus no more Doraemon movies being made?

With XMAS coming, Is it too early to call 20B for Suzume?

It's something to keep an eye on in the coming years. If if fell below ¥1 billion, there'd be a major problem. They're relatively cheap at least, but I don't know if it'd be worth if if grosses dipped below ¥2 billion. Now, Crayon Shin-chan hovers around this mark and has survived all this time. So, there may be a lower threshold to fall below.

Pokemon isn't releasing films anymore as grosses declined, presumably, below what they considered profitable. But more companies are involved here and were splitting the earnings. Will we see more in the future? Maybe, but the films almost exclusively appealed to young children which are disappearing. It won't be easy to revive with the core audience shrinking.

Speaking of Pokemon... A record (many in fact) was just broken involving the new games. I'll share more later.

I think it's well too early, but if someone wants to predict it early and celebrate if it gets there, be my guest! LOL.

I'm sticking around ¥15 billion. What a crazy 12 months it's been.

So... 3 months ago, Splatoon 3 destroyed the first week sales record in Japan, and now Pokemon Scarlet/Violet just destroyed that record! The first games to ever sell over 3 million copies in one week (3 days) and 4 million happened in the same year, barely 3 months apart.

And not only that... It sold over 10 million copies in 3 days worldwide, making it the biggest worldwide launch in history for Nintendo and any exclusive console release.

:yummy:

The way the record has changed hands this gen is insane. It only changed hands twice in 20 years but now it has changed 3 times in the span of 3 years lmao.

Also, nutty wed for Suzume (OP really made use of it as well). Would be cool to still have some competition for #1 this year after all that has happened.

Won't Slam dunk and Avatar compete for seats against Suzume? If Suzume does well against them then I think 20B is possible. Will be hard to do with the competition and lack of holidays though.

Yeah, and that's one of the big questions when trying to determine where it could be headed.

Slam Dunk won't be as big of an impact since it's Toei, and Toho Cinemas will likely still favor Suzume over it, or at least keep it playing on plenty of bigger screens.

Avatar 2 will likely take most/all the biggest screens when it opens, not to mention most/all the premium formats. And if it ends up being an uber-blockbuster, Suzume probably won't be able to recover them, at least not for the New Year holiday frame.

But there's a lot of guessing here. I don't think anyone really knows what Slam Dunk is going to do. Its status as one of the biggest, most popular manga series ever is clear, but will it translate to a blockbuster at the box office? Is there still concern that the film uses CGI, which many fans typically dismiss? On an unfortunate "plus side", I read one of the voice actors passed away last week. I could see such a thing bringing out the fans to pay respects of sorts.

And Avatar 2... while I'm optimistic, there's some potential negatives that could bring it down. The first film was largely a product of the times. Its opening weekend was pretty meh. Not bad, just not really special that the next Cameron film after *the* Titanic should have achieved. But then WOM spread about this amazing new, revolutionary 3D theatrical experience and legs were massive as a result. But when the next major 3D film opened (Alice in Wonderland), it collapsed and ended its run shortly after since there was little/no interest to see it anymore, with interest moving to Alice instead (which was huge in Japan, again, due to the must-see 3D factor that year and a couple thereafter).

The sequel doesn't have this "must-see new experience" going for it. The only reason to see it is if you enjoyed the first one or if you're looking for something to catch over the holidays. And I don't get the feeling that Avatar is especially beloved in the market. Not to say it's disliked, I just haven't seen evidence it left its mark on audiences based on nothing-to-brag-about home video sales and TV broadcast ratings.

But there might be enough of a "craving" to see a huge, big budget Hollywood blockbuster. Top Gun: Maverick aside, Hollywood hasn't had a single blockbuster in Japan since 2019. I can see it capturing enough people looking for SOMETHING, ANYTHING, from Hollywood that isn't another niche superhero film or Disney film they can stream in a couple months. (Speaking of... Disney better keep it off Disney+ for several months. Ideally, they'd wait until April.)

This got way longer than I anticipated...

In short: Suzume should be fine either way. If Slam Dunk and/or Avatar 2 don't meet expectations, then it'll have higher potential by keeping the bigger and/or premium screens. But if one or both meet/exceed expectations, it should still be fine since business will just be spread out a bit more, IMO. If someone is interested in Suzume, they're not choosing any of its competition to see instead.

I am not sure why I am saying this but if Avatar 2 can not gross more than 2x of Top Gun Maverick (assuming ¥13.5B closing) i.e. ¥27B then Avatar 2 should not release in Japan at all.. because at 1st, USD Total will be hellish depressing and I just do not want to see it falling behind Avatar (2009) Total atleast in USD to call it a victory...

My inner sense says that IMAX/4DX/MX4D will have a historically the biggest share in Weekend box office!! How should we forecast for weekend since Premium format will heavily dominate!!

That's one of the old voice actors though, he's not involved in the film which replaced all of them (!!). Speaking of, this seems to be very controversial and response seemed to be pretty harsh on twitter to me. Maybe means nothing, but it sort of surprised me as jp fans tend to be a lot more mellow on twitter from what I've seen, it's pretty rare to see announcements met like that.
