So do ticket price averages change or does Mimorin cover a small portion over time? Because based on what I and Tairo calculated it should have been around ¥1.22 billion.

Weekdays usually have lower share% from mimorin compared to weekend iirc. Also in general nothing guarantees the usual % will be identical every weekend/weekday, mimorin is just to estimate, don't expect it to translate to actuals with 100% accuracy.

This is really, REALLY good for Top Gun: Maverick. It's doing better outside the usual locations now, and its average ticket price grew quite a bit. The weekdays, in particular, are outstanding; they were 1% higher than its third weekend in revenue (and 7% in admissions), while its admissions were down about 26% at the usual locations. That's a major, MAJOR swing (34%), and huge gains from rural locations to turn this into an increase.

This changes things. Reaching rural audiences is often difficult, but when a film does, it can propel them quite high (as we just saw this week). For the full week, it was down like ~21% at the usual locations (largely urban theaters) in admissions, but nationwide it was just 14%. Rural locations only account for about 20% of the nation's theaters, but they came out big, really, really, big this past week to bring that down so much.

If it behaves like it did last week over the weekdays, then Monday is probably up. Mon-Fri was down 26% at the usual locations (admissions) versus the third weekend, but nationwide they were up 7% (25-30% of the market, largely rural locations, caused a whopping 34% swing into the positive). So, being down 11% at the usual locations on Monday may suggest an increase nationwide. We'll need to see if last week was an outlier though since the previous weeks were more in-line with the usual location figures.

If it does a ¥1 billion (or more) this week, and is up to ¥6.7/6.8 billion as of June 26th, ¥10 billion will become more likely than not.

Here is the weekend/weekday breakdown:

WEEKDAYS:
¥332 million (Friday, OD)
¥975 million
¥815 million
¥678 million

WEEKENDS:
¥825 million (Sat-Sun, OW)
¥757 million
¥669 million
¥594 million

It's an outstanding 50.4% to 49.6% ratio after the fourth weekend. I mentioned after its first week (where it was 47:53) that the closer you get to a 50:50 ratio, the more likely you are to have a very long run in the market because you're attracting most (all) demos that allow every day of the week to thrive. Women/Seniors support the weekdays, while Men/Families support the weekends.

If that ratio swings too much in favor of the weekends or weekdays, it usually means at least one key demographic is lacking and/or little (or no) casual appeal.

Well... it's basically 50:50 after four weeks, so expect much, much more to come. I want to predict it'll exceed ¥10 billion, but I still want to be cautious just because of how crowded the market becomes after July 15th. I doubt anything really takes it audience away, but the screen/showtime counts are likely to suffer. We'll see though.

Works that opened new this weekend, will get Weekend actuals on Wed (06:00/06:30/09:00) in Local Time. Corpse will update charts once all Weekend numbers are out. So, probably waiting until tomorrow.

I still usually do it on Monday. Sometimes the weekend (Sat-Sun) figures are delayed for smaller openers, but their 3-day (if they opened on Fri.) are released and isn't really worth delaying them a full day because of them. I was just busy last night, and will have them up shortly.

>Top Gun: Maverick reclaims the top spot after narrowly losing it last weekend (by 0.001%), dropping a phenomenal 11% again, selling 353,900 admissions to brings it four-week admissions up to 3,641,051. But while its weekends have been amazing, its weekdays have, perhaps, been even more so as they currently make up 50% of the overall total. And... it's the FIRST Hollywood release to achieve blockbuster status since 2019! There's really no reason to doubt its potential at this point, as it's proven it's going to have a very long run in the market. To be "safe", I'd expect a finish between ¥8.5-9.5 billion (that's giving it weekly 20-25% declines), but there's a real chance now that it could make a run at ¥10 billion+ ($75 million+).

>Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero fell hard in its sophomore frame, and fell a bit shy of doubling its opening weekend after its second week. Its two-week admissions are up to 947,690. So, not a good sign for its legs, but we already knew it was going to be frontloaded (frontloaded franchise + June release date). ¥2.5 billion becomes the goal here, but it will need to deliver a strong hold in its third weekend (anything more than 30% will be concerning) to get there. A 30% (or better) third weekend hold seems unlikely, but it is receiving it 4DX expansion in its third weekend which should make it doable.

>Shin Ultraman held decently following its strong hold last weekend (when it received it 4DX expansion), and will likely break ¥4 billion next weekend. Admissions have reached 2,572,376 after six weeks. I would expect a finish around ¥4.3/4.4 billion ($33-35 million) and near 3 million admissions.

>The Hound of Baskervilles: Sherlock the Movie is estimated for the weekend frame (EDIT: Actual updated above), but its 3-day total above is the actual (where it sold 103,507 admissions across 334 screens). If its opening weekend comes in above ¥100 million, I'll edit this post and add it to the 2022 Opening Weekend Chart tomorrow.

>The Pass: The Last Days of the Samurai sold 92,121 admissions over its 3-day on 341 screens.

>Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween is still holding quite well, and might hit ¥9 billion next weekend. From there, it's pretty likely to surpass Zero the Enforcer (¥9.18 billion) to become the second highest-grossing film in the long-running franchise. Can it challenge The Fist of Blue Sapphire (¥9.37 billion)? Probably not, but the opportunity is there if Toho wants to give it the franchise record. It might not even need some sort of giveaway or a return to a premium format, either. They could try letting it play all throughout the summer and Obon Festival and see what happens.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Summer 2022 (July/August) Release Sche
July is pretty crowded as usual. 14 wide releases, 9 of which are opening in over 300 theaters (roughly the equivalent of 3,000 in the U.S.), and 6 of those will be competing for the premium formats. So, I assume they didn't do it for that reason.

Mid-July through late-August are the strongest six weeks at the box-office, so studios pack these months.

And One Piece (same distributor) is releasing the first week of August (and Kamen Rider in July, and Haw in August), which was probably too close for Toei to have considered it. The major distributors in Japan have their own theater chains. Toho has many theaters and operate the busiest chain in the country, so they can release a bunch of their own films near one another just fine. But for Toei, for example, which has fewer theaters, they'd have to cut into their own films, losing pure profit, if they scheduled too many close together.

No. It's pretty rare for a film to get an official update during the weekdays.

Corpse,
Is there a chance for TGM to hit 10B Yen or is that still unlikely.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Summer 2022 (July/August) Release Sche
Probably 50/50.

It's hard to really find any comparisons. Most of the "best" ones (similar fourth weekend/four week total) either entered a holiday frame before their fourth weekend (thus already boosting their numbers), or were about to enter a holiday period (thus haven't received a boost to their numbers yet). It's very rare for films to reach ¥10 billion with no major holiday support, which Top Gun: Maverick does not really have given its release date. Summer Vacation will begin in its eighth weekend, but it shouldn't be a film that benefits much from that (mostly younger-skewing films do or films with some sort of family/kid/teen appeal). And then it'll have Obon Festival in its twelfth weekend which will benefit it, but given how far that's away, it's hard to say what sort of impact it'll have.

So in short, it'll have received very little holiday support (almost none) during most of its run. And if it gets to ¥10 billion like this, it'll be damn impressive. Of the 39 ¥10 billion earners, only 6 films (Demon Slayer, Your Name., Aladdin (2019), The Matrix Reloaded, Pirates 3, and Bayside Shakedown) have reached that milestone without a major holiday period (New Year, Spring Break, Golden Week, Obon Festival) within the first 60 days of their release.
