Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (06/11-12); Charts Update
Shochiku has had a great first half of the year. (Helps that Arashi has continued to earn money for them all year.) Their summer outlook looks pretty dismal if My Boyfriend in Orange would disappoint, but hopefully it does the opposite and can breakout a bit. But the first half has done so well, their overall year will look good no matter what now.

Toei, on the other hand, has had a rough first half of the year, but they just released Dragon Ball (so that'll be ¥2.5-3 billion). And better yet, they have One Piece in August, so that's a likely ¥5 billion+ for them. So, their summer/second half of 2022 is going to be quite strong.

And lastly, Toho's pretty stable. If Doraemon didn't disappoint, I think they'd be in the positive. Since Toho has a clear monopoly over the box office, the box office follows how well they do. They, however, don't have a major film this summer, which is unusual. Shinkai's new film would have been it, I think, if it had been ready in time. And while the box-office potential for Studio Ponoc's new film is questionable, it was moved out of July since it wasn't ready. So, their summer is going to look poor, but they have a strong fall/winter slate.

And speaking of One Piece... Oda is taking a one-month break to prepare for the FINAL arc to begin this summer. People have made jokes over the decades that it'd never end, but we're finally here. Now, this final arc will probably last 4-5 years, but it's crazy to think the manga is a month out from its final arc.

Going to be a real end of an era for both Shueisha and Toei Animation who have both relied on One Piece on a weekly basis for the past 25 years (so far). The manga is about to have over 500 million copies in circulation for Shueisha (that's more than Batman, and only behind Superman worldwide). And while TV ratings have gradually declined, it's always been a reliable weekly show for Toei (and since 2009, blockbuster films for them at the box-office).

Latest trailer for Film Red opening on August 6th:

And the film's theme song:

That OP film will overperform imo. There's a nice mix of popular singers and enough plotbait with the shank references (which will probably be minimal in the film but marketing goes a long way) for it to do 6b I think.

I'm optimistic about its potential, too.

-Perfect release date. ~4 weeks of Summer Vacation remaining + Obon Festival in its second week. And all the other big summer releases are opening in July, so the competition in August itself is light.
-Opening a few weeks after the manga enters its final arc.
-Shanks being featured; he's been a fan favorite for 25 years, yet he's had very little page/screen time.
-Music being a focal point. The single ("New Genesis" by Ado) was released just last week, so hard to get a read on how it's doing, but it does have a respectable amount of views already.

Can't really think of any negative factors. The manga sales have declined in recent years (at least physical sales), but they've also stabilized a bit and are still as big as/bigger than anything else out there per volume. This didn't stop the last film, Stampede, from outgrossing Film Gold though, so I don't think it'll be a negative factor here either.

This may not really impact the film's performance at all, but One Piece live-action Netflix show is scheduled to wrap on July 10th. I don't know if there'd be enough time for any footage or teasers to drop before Film Red opens, but it's possible which could create some additional buzz/interest with just regular folk.

I'd largely write this off as an upcoming flop from Netflix (One Piece... in live-action, really?), but I'll remain a bit hopeful because Oda has been involved, the casting (at least by appearance) has been on point, and the production team appears to have gone the extra-mile in set design and attention to detail. They're investing $100 million ($10m per episode) into it. So, it *seems* there is an effort here to make this work to the best of their ability. But One Piece in the live-action realm is still really hard to swallow.

I kinda want it to be good since it seems like a lot of care was poured into it, but it's really hard to see it. One Piece is like the opposite of what I think for live actions. Just doesn't fit.

This is a work in progress and I'd like to get Kanroji Mitsuri's eyes on it. Do attendance numbers exist for any of these outside of Shin Ultraman?

2) Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers (2008) - ¥838 Million
3) Ultraman Cosmos 2: The Blue Planet (2002) - ¥700 Million
4) Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends (2009) - ¥620 Million

6) Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey (2000) - ¥600 Million
7) Ultraman Saga (2012) - ¥579 Million
8) Ultraman Cosmos: First Contact (2001) - ¥500 Million
9) Ultraman Cosmos vs. Ultraman Justice: The Final Battle (2003) - ¥500 Million
10) Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial (2010) - ¥407 Million
11) Ultraman Gaia: The Battle in Hyperspace (1999) - ¥340 Million

⚪ Ultraman Orb The Movie (2017) : ¥200M

There isn't any accurate or recorded admission number, I have seen for Ultraman (I am saying that it doesn't exist) If I find any admission data, I will post it on the forum. Prior to that, Ultraman Films released between 2017-2021 made less than ¥100M (??). But, to be honest, I really had a hard time finding these numbers (I did find numbers for Bond Universe &It's Tough being a man, which was way easier as data was available in abundance) But, I will still be looking for more breakdown on Ultraman Numbers. Have a great day!

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest to 5 Billion
Estimating that Top Gun: Maverick is up to about ¥4.87 billion after Friday, its 22nd day in release, so it'll break ¥5 billion on Saturday, its 23rd day of release. This is far from any record or anything, but it's in very good company by just making the chart below (especially since it's on par with/pulled ahead of some of the films surrounding it on the chart on a weekly basis).

Also, this is the FIRST Hollywood film to reach ¥5 billion since 2019 (Star Wars IX). There have been eight Japanese films that have done so in all that time, but Hollywood has struggled in the market this decade, so this is a much bigger accomplishment (or will be tomorrow) for Hollywood than in years past.

Fastest Films to ¥5 billion (Blockbuster Milestone):

4 days - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
9 days - Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021)
10 days - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
11 days - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

Free! - The Final Stage - Part 2's official twitter account announced that the film has surpassed 860 million yen with over 600,000 admissions. This puts it 4th overall in films animated by KyoAni and 3rd in films where KyoAni has led the production committee.

I know this thread cares more about other films, especially Western ones, but this is a really good showing for this title given it's lasted for 9 years.

It's an excellent result so far, and it'll likely be going above ¥1 billion since it's receiving a 4DX expansion in July. Honestly, after the first couple weeks, it looked like it was going to possibly fall short of Part 1 (or barely match it), but it's been putting up strong numbers over the past few weeks.

And yeah, the longevity of the franchise is notable. Its core fanbase might be relatively small versus some other franchises, but it's proven very loyal. Feel they can keep the franchise alive for longer still.

Free! and QQ fanbase are quite loyal (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.). Ultimatemegax, don't count me on that list. Believe me or not, I haven't watched any Potter Films and TLORs, one of the TLOR movies has win all the Oscar nominations it has got (I know it as general knowledge hehehe). QQ is delivering Violet Evergarden numbers will soon exceed ¥2.0B in later weeks.

BTW, LightYear will release in premium formats only for 2 weeks and As of June 15, DS:MOM had reached ¥2,143,790,000 / 1,399,293 visitors.

KyoAni fans (overall) are very loyal I think... My favorite franchise is Hibike! Euphonium but I really like Free! (because it's a KyoAni show and I practice swimming). The first part was available for a short time in France (2 days) in theaters, I hope it will be the same for the second part.

About another anime franchise, Corpse, do you have some information about the results of Takagi-san movie in the Japanese box office? Thanks,

Looks like Dragon Ball is dropping pretty harshly. It will be up to Sunday to soften the blow since it will likely increase on Saturday this time unlike last weekend.

Meanwhile TGM dropping around 22% week on week as of 5.30 pm.

Yeah Super Hero is down about 63.5%. Resurrection F dropped 60%.

Resurrection F then increased 24% on the Sunday so Super Hero needs to top that if it's gonna have a chance at a under 50% drop for the weekend.

The bad news for DBS is that Sunday increases, if they happen, have become much smaller than years past. Another sign that rural locations aren't performing as well anymore (change of demographics = less kids, teens, families every year). Hoping for the best, but I'd prepare for a drop around 55%.

And I'm definitely worried about Lightyear's potential now. Reviews are fine, but far from the expected Pixar magic. And its opening is looking to be pretty subdued in the US, meaning Disney is more likely to put it on Disney+ after 30-45 days. That could mean a Disney+ release before August, which is going to kill its box-office in Japan. Mid-July (start of Summer Vacation) through late-August (Obon Festival the second/third week) is the strongest five to six week period of the entire year, so missing out on that would be devastating.

So ¥3 billion obviously isn't happening is it?

Can ¥2.5 billion even still happen?

I'm confused on this too, on Tairo it's saying the estimated gross is "9億3200万円". Which I assumed was ¥932 million but when it's translated through Google it's ¥923 million.

Which is right?

As of June 18, 2022, it's ¥1077M per Mr. Taroi's estimate, he has added Sat's number so far.

LightYear isn't doing anything good in any of the Asian Countries. SK numbers which usually gives some hint on how JPN gonna react is just errrrr.... Hong Kong &Taiwan are at 2nd and 3rd respectively. While Thailand isn't even doing half of TS4.... If I am a bit of optimistic, outside South America, LightYear isn't doing well in any countries.

Following the conclusion of the beloved 1995 television show, the legendary project received new life as the Evangelion movie series. The theatrical film series began with 2007’s Evangelion: 1.11 You are (Not) Alone, followed by Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance from 2009, Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo (2012), and the franchise finale Evangelion : 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon A Time.

Last year, GKIDS released the original twenty-six episode television series, Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as the films Evangelion: Death (True) 2 and the End Of Evangelion on Blu-ray and digital download-to-own for the first time in North America. GKIDS also handles North American distribution for creator Hideaki Anno’s prior series, NADIA: The Secret of Blue Water.

“GKIDS is honored to represent the epic conclusion of a story over 25 years in the making,” said GKIDS President David Jesteadt. “Like with so many others, Evangelion was critical in expanding my idea of what animation could be, and I look forward to joining other fans in theaters to celebrate the end of the saga with Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon A Time.

Yeah, I'd be really surprised if DBS got to ¥3 billion. ¥2.5 billion can still be attained though. Even frontloaded films can double their two-week totals, which, based on some estimates, would be close to that mark.

The June release (though not their fault due to being hacked) really sucks. It's just a bad month, second only to October, and unless everything goes right, it's generally a graveyard for openers. One Piece being in August really complicated things for Toei, too, and sort of forced their hand further to go with June vs July/August. Maybe a mid-Sept release (to take advantage of the Silver Week holidays there, although this year they don't align for a full week holiday period) would have been better, but that's also an iffy spot because the weeks/months to follow are weak.

That April hack really screwed with it. That's not to say it would have done substantially more with a better release date, because this is a fanbase-driven film in the end, but better release dates optimize potential (probably ¥4 billion in this case) and can help bring in a small number of casual moviegoers too, whereas poor release dates largely eliminates more than a bare-minimum sort of performance.

¥932 million. You have to read this as "9*100,000,000 + 3,200*10,000" which equals ¥932 million.
