Fast X is taking Franchise OD Record but that's still a decrease in USD looks like Forex won't help and Critics here believe that the content really support to be good enough for ¥4.0B+ Final

Have not been in this thread in years, nice to see its still going.
Dissapointing numbers for Avatar, im suprised.
Great for slam dunk, i remember the old anime well, probably the best basketball series ever, happy to see its still very popular 30 years later.

I'm thinking Cinderella numbers (¥6 billion) or maybe even lower due to lack of a major star like Emma Watson for BatB and Will Smith for Aladdin.

I'm keeping expectations pretty low. Disney's record is heavily against it and if Avatar 2 couldn't succeed (73% decline), I don't have high hopes for The Little Mermaid. It also doesn't have any big names (for the market) attached.

We've been talking about Disney's epic and abrupt collapse in Japan for years now, and whether or not they can recover because surely something in all this time (3+ years) would have found success, right? But it's been disappointment and bombs one after the other.

The live-action remakes have been very successful in Japan, with Beauty, Aladdin, and Alice all earning over ¥10 billion and being Disney's biggest films after Frozen and Frozen II.

Cinderella didn't do as well presumably because it wasn't a musical and had no 3D release (although the format was well past its prime then), but it also didn't have any big names attached. And The Lion King didn't do much higher, probably due to talking animals being the cast (most animated films with only animals struggle).

On paper, no big name attached aside, The Little Mermaid *should* be a ¥10 billion contender. It's quintessential Disney. But with audiences abandoning them at the box office, half that would be big success for the studio these days. They haven't had a single ¥5 billion earner since 2019.

If Avatar 2 had released before Disney+ and the pandemic, do you think it would have been a ¥10 billion potential film? Or was it always destined to drop hard like Alice to Alice 2 after the 3D fad was over? But unlike Alice 2 which dropped hard everywhere, Japan is the sole outlier for Avatar 2.

And if anyone is thinking Beauty and the Beast had no big names, it may sound odd, but Emma Watson definitely qualified.

The early Harry Potter films remain some of the biggest films in Japan 20 years later, and if you look at all the charts I post, you'll see the first three films (especially 1 and 2) ranked very high on a lot of them. In fact, for Hollywood films only, they still hold some records.

I don't know how high the Harry Potter films still rank in markets like the UK and Germany, but their popularity in Japan at least is sometimes forgotten I think. The Fantastic Beasts films remained strong in Japan (the first one outgrossed HP7 even), and FB3 outgrossed No Way Home and Avatar 2! Lol.

Emma Watson didn't make Harry Potter famous, of course, but being in Hollywood's biggest franchise in Japan to this day, went a long, long way. Beauty and the Beast would have still been big, but it's easy to say it was as big as it was because of Watson being so recognizable with audiences.

I believe a decline was always going to happen. Maybe not as much, but ¥10 billion was going to be tough regardless. I don't think Avatar 2 could have more than doubled its gross if it released before 2020.

3D was largely a fad between 2009-2013, with films in 2010-2011 in particular having 75-85% 3D shares. Then it began to decline heavily in 2012 (50% was hard to hit), then again in 2013 when 25% was difficult, and finally it died out from 2014 onward.

3D was a novelty, really, and Avatar was the one that started it. Avatar's home video sales and TV ratings were a big sign it didn't leave much of an impression on audiences too.

So Avatar 2 had a lot against it already, and when you add in Disney failing in the market because of Disney+, it basically ensured an even bigger decline.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Though I wonder if Disney+ actually made a difference in the end since Avatar 2 is going to end up having an almost 6 month window before debuting on the streaming platform.

It had to have made some kind of difference since every Disney release has disappointed since it launched. It's the one thing they all have it common.

Maybe if Disney advertised it would be exclusive in theaters for 6 months, then maybe that could have helped a bit, but I don't recall them making any such announcement. And in a backloaded market like Japan, where many are fine waiting weeks or months to see a movie, Disney+ just has that much more of a negative impact on movies there since the wait isn't a factor for many.

Disney films have also become frontloaded in the market, which I believe is because those with the most interest still largely come out in the first couple weeks, but after that, there's few moviegoers to bring in since they're fine waiting for Disney+. This causes them to have hefty drops, lose screens/showings faster, and ultimately play out much faster than they did it the past. Avatar 2 may have had a 6 month window, but its run was largely exhausted by the end of February.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Charts Updating
Some Weekend Numbers (05/19-21):
¥992.4 million ($7.2 million), 0, ¥0.99 million ($7.2 million) - Fast X (Toho-Towa) NEW
¥742.8 million ($5.4 million), -30%, ¥9.14 billion ($66.9 million) - The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Toho-Towa) WK4
¥327.0 million ($2.4 million), -34%, ¥11.74 billion ($87.3 million) - Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine (Toho) WK6
¥229.0 million ($1.7 million), -29%, ¥3.48 billion ($25.7 million) - Tokyo MER: Mobile Emergency Room (Toho) WK4

Other Updated Totals:
¥14.71 billion ($107.9 million) - Suzume (Toho) WK28
¥14.21 billion ($106.8 million) - The First Slam Dunk (Toei) WK25

Admissions:
~11.09 million - Suzume (Toho) WK28
~9.87 million - The First Slam Dunk (Toei) WK25
8.27 million - Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine (Toho) WK6
6.43 million - The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Toho-Towa) WK4
2.63 million - Tokyo MER: Mobile Emergency Room (Toho) WK4
646,000 - Fast X (Toho-Towa) NEW

NOTES:

-Fast X had a strong start. Kanroji mentioned that someone, the distributor maybe, is expecting ¥4 billion and... that looks reasonable. ¥3.5 billion is more likely I think, but either result puts it near the top of the franchise (Fast 7 and Fast 8 being in that range too).

-Super Mario is still doing well, though the weak weekdays (only accounted for 32% of weekly gross this week) and this "average" fourth weekend drop (kinda "steep", being the fourth biggest 4th weekend drop among the 40+ films on the Biggest 4th Weekend Chart) tells me it's not going to have one of those uber-long runs that goes on for several months. As such, we can probably rule out ¥15 billion now and safely predict a total around ¥12-13 billion / 8.5-9 million admissions. And this is amazing! Its Golden Week opening just really, really inflated its first two weeks to make it appear it was going higher.

-Detective Conan 26 still looks good for ¥12.5-13 billion / 8.8-9.2 million admissions. So, gonna be very close between it and Super Mario, but I have to give the edge to Conan here since it's fourth week total is over ¥1 billion higher, and it's closer to that range already and doesn't really need any impressive holds to get there like Mario still needs.

-Tokyo MER is probably going to hit ¥4 billion (almost $30 million). This gross isn't big in itself, but it's quite notable for a local live-action film these days.

-Suzume and Slam Dunk haven't had their admissions updated yet, but they should be right about what I've estimated above (give or take 0.1 million). Also, it still remains to be seen which one will outgross the other. Suzume's final weekend and date is coming up (May 27th), and I don't think it's got close enough to ¥15 billion for a final weekend bump to get it there. Assume it'll finish with ~¥14.8/14.9 billion. Slam Dunk *shouldn't* be able to reach it (it slipped out of the Top 10 for the first time in its 25th weekend), but it all depends on how Toei handles it in the coming weeks/months.

Posting all this now because we didn't get all the full top 10 weekend grosses released last week for some reason, so getting ahead of this in case it happens again. When Suzume and Slam Dunk's admissions are confirmed later today, I'll update the charts.

Yeah, I tried projecting mario forward with some reasonable/good holds and it landed right around the 12-13b range. It doesn't seem like Toho has much interest in doing giveaways for it either so far...so it seems like it'll finish there.

I hope TLM can do ok, but the first numbers coming out of Asia are not encouraging whatsoever...SK presales are going really poorly and China's are completely bombing...so it would be typical Japan fashion to turn around and have it overperform instead, cause, you know, they can, I guess. :funny:

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 05/19-21 First Update
I hope for the very best for The Little Mermaid. Another big hit at the box office so soon after Conan and Mario would be nice and help get through what's usually a slow June.

But more importantly, Disney *really* needs a big hit here. They're in an almost desperate situation in Japan now, I feel, and Mermaid succeeding is vital. If it doesn't at least reach the ¥5 billion milestone, Indiana Jones 5 is their only other film with a real shot at doing it in 2023 and it's probably 50% at best. Maybe Wish, but I doubt it. And 2024 looks rough for them, too, as I'd only put Snow White and Inside Out 2 (the first one did exactly ¥5 billion, but Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 declined, so not a good sign for the sequel) in the maybe category.

3.5 years is already a really damaging amount of time to go without a blockbuster, but 4 years... or even 5 years? If Little Mermaid and/or Indiana Jones don't do it, I think Disney may be forced to consider what to do theatrically in the market. They're near that do or die situation, IMO. Couple solutions: 1. Not putting theatrical films on Disney+ at all, at least for a year and make it clear they have to be seen in theaters. 2. Or possibly selling their distribution rights like Paramount and Universal did (to great success).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Numbers (05/19-21); Charts Update
Top Opening Weekends of 2023 FINALLY updated (sorry it took a while). And I added a new top tier for both it and the Top Grossing Films Chart.

The big films are getting a little closer to ¥15 billion than ¥10 billion in the recent years, so I've added it as a milestone. Granted, it's still sort of that ultimate milestone that is still super difficult to reach (just 6 films in the last 15 years, of which 2 from the last 3 years), so it's not going to have much company above it.

As for opening weekends, they're naturally going to grow now that Japan has moved to 3-day weekends. A little above ¥2 billion was the most any film (aside from Demon Slayer because it was Demon Slayer) ever did during the 2-day era. And with Detective Conan breaking ¥3 billion last month in the 3-day era, I feel it's probably the new upper-limit a film can do now. ¥1 billion is also going to be a good deal "easier" for films to hit on opening weekends with 3-days, so we'd be needing a higher milestone anyway.
