Post Re: Japan Box-Office: One Piece Film Red - OD Record?
Good find. And yeah, I'd use ~170,000 as a bare minimum. With the other chains reaching 80-85% capacity, it makes sense for Aeon (and others) to have benefitted as well. They were all benefitting from one another, most likely.

But I also say this because this was clearly considered a much bigger event than the past films. Not to dismiss them (they had big openings of their own), but this one basically matched/beat their OWs in one day.

Aeon having a waiting line to reserve tickets during the day, and people sharing how full some of the theaters were (Aeon rarely gets shared because they don't normally hit such a level), suggests it did very well there too.

I think it's worth noting that OP: Red is opening with IMAX, 4D and Dolby, which were pretty much sold out nationwide as far as I can tell. KnY and JJK only opened with IMAX, so there's no way red isn't getting the higher atp and probably by a decent chunk. It might come below KnY OD in admissions, but I think it will definitely win out gross.

True. Gold had an ATP of ¥1408, so it should be higher than that. Stampede came in lower though at ¥1365. If I recall, Gold got 3D showings (in addition to 4D), so that probably explains it. (3D is basically an irrelevant format now.) Stampede also opened against The Lion King, so likely received fewer premiums than normal, too.

More recently, JJK did ¥1429 (with no 4D) while DC25 did ¥1432 (all the premiums). I would expect Red to at least match them, but could wind up slightly higher, too. For comparison, Demon Slayer did ¥1338 (with no 4D) which is quite a bit lower, and I believe was due to it attracting kids/families and even seniors.

If Red did 900,000 admissions today, ¥1410 would give it the OD record. If it's more like 875,000 admissions, then ¥1450 would be required. Anything less in admissions and it probably misses the record unless the ATP comes in especially higher. It looks possible it broke the record but again, don't want to say too soon and it's a bit shy (which would still be crazy).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: All Time Opening Weekends

So yeah, it'd be #2 all-time on both lists if this happened, and has a decent bit of wiggle room to drop and remain in the same positions, too. If it came in lower (still breaking ¥2 billion or close to it), it'd still be massively huge, but since it appears to have a path to #2, breaking that previous 17-year-old record The Matrix Reloaded held until Demon Slayer: Mugen Train shattered it in 2020, is nuts.

And it might have taken the OD record with these numbers, too.

Thanks for the screen count! I doubt we get any official news until Monday at this point. There have been rare occasions when studios make announcements on the weekend, but as said, quite rare. SO... let the estimating using tricky numbers continue another day! (Demon Slayer wasn't even announced until Monday.)

As for Sunday, it's down about 14% as we head toward noon. This is very good, though I would like to see it close the gap just a bit more (closer to 10%, or less if possible) because Sundays after 8pm see a significant decline versus Saturdays, which will cut into the numbers. Hoping for a ~15% decline, but 20% or better would be satisfactory.

But the question is... is if its Saturday number is including United now, because it is for Sunday (so far).

I am hoping that decline isn't worser than JJK (-18%). About, UNITED, I think it isn't fixed yet. No notes from blogger though. I am anticipating that truth will be known on buggy night but shouldn't be painful (っ˘̩╭╮˘̩)っ

Occupancy is 61% rn, so will probably be 58-60% by end of day since that tends to drop sharply on late afternoon-evening sunday shows. Using that rate to yesterday's 500k seats gives 290k-300k, 28-30% drop from sat. Pretty sharp but considering it would've been a big victory even if this was the opening day instead still quite good IMO.

I can't answer that. If we had numbers for Aeon and United, then maybe, but I have a feeling it'd still be too close to say. :funny:

I legit think it's like 50/50. Revenue will be "more likely" than admissions if it took the OD record.

Pretty sharp but considering it would've been a big victory even if this was the opening day instead still quite good IMO.

That'd basically be the same decline Gold had on Sunday (I mistakenly said it was 24% yesterday when it was 28%), so it would at least be in line with it and not abnormally large.

It is ever so slightly improving as the day goes on, so here's hoping for ~325,000 or so today (with United being in question still).

Can I repeat the question, Corpse?

Spoiler: show
Change "JJK" to "OP"

I can't answer that. If we had numbers for Aeon and United, then maybe, but I have a feeling it'd still be too close to say. :funny:

I legit think it's like 50/50. Revenue will be "more likely" than admissions if it took the OD record.

Yeah attendance usually rises in the early afternoon until like 3/4, then loses a lot.

Also united is definitely being counted now, I think. The seats% look correct now. 0.378 of 625k gives 236k, which matches properly with the 237k we're at now, so that should be working fine now. Though will make comparing to yesterday harder I guess.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: One Piece Film Red - OD Record?
Damn impressive Sunday. ~64% sell-rate with a lot of seating. Not as strong or impressive a Saturday, but it's bigger (and more impressive) than everything, I believe, except for Demon Slayer. Getting 391k at the usual locations without Aeon is pretty absurd. Very, very few have gotten there WITH Aeon included. It'll be comfortably above 500k with Aeon included, which only Demon Slayer has only exceeded before.

Getting near a 50% sell-rate is very impressive and very rare for these very wide openers, and most tend to fall below 40% (35-40% is sort of the standard range). The only films above 50% (for the weekend) since 2014 are the 2016-2019 Detective Conan films (52.1%-56.4%), the second Yo-Kai Watch movie (59.1%), and, of course, Demon Slayer (77.2%).

And One Piece Film Red may have sold 70% of all its seats for the weekend. Not having Aeon (and with United bugging out on Sat) makes it hard to determine a precise sell-rate for One Piece Film Red, but with Saturday looking like it was over 80% (~82%, perhaps), and Sunday now at ~64% (maybe a tad less since Aeon usually trail the other chains in sell-rate), it looks like ~70% with some rough math. That'd only be behind Demon Slayer if accurate (but everything will be second to DS, so no shock there).

I'll do my best to provide some estimates here soon. Hoping we get a breakdown by chain again, since we'll have United this time and can use Toho for a rough Aeon number.

Most of the day played like I thought it would, but then evening shows actually held impressively which was surprising to me. 2.2-2.4b weekend range?

Yeah, I think so. I'm not going as high as ¥2.4 billion, personally (unless the chain breakdown, if given, might change some of the math regarding United yesterday), but ¥2.2/2.3 billion is what I'm currently getting.

I already have some estimates and a whole list of records and/or achievements made (over a dozen strong currently), but want to make sure no updates (like the chain breakdown) comes out in the next hour or so to change anything.

I only saw the chain breakdown someone posted at 14pm (I'm only on mobile rn for...reasons and can't access 5ch) for today, but it had united below kinezo. If that holds and was also true yesterday would be probably a flat 70k from united, or +67k since like 3k was already included in the number we got.

Thanks.

There are two key variables here (well, I guess three) that ultimately make any estimates close to "guesstimates".

-No Aeon data. We can estimate, but since they're the biggest chain (by location/seating), being high/low of any estimate changes the math a good deal.

-The Average Ticket Price. This shouldn't be too hard to give a range for (using past films), but again, the high/low end of a range can change a lot when the admissions are this high.

-How the other chains (the remaining 30% or so of the market) performed. Toei releases, in the past, tend to do pretty well outside of the usual locations, so that's encouraging. On the other hand, the urban regions (the majority of the usual locations) have been pulling further ahead of the rural regions (the majority of the remaining market) over the past year or two. The most recent (bigger) film we have from Toei is Dragon Ball Super just two months ago, and its 497k admissions was taking the usual locations admissions (which included Aeon) of 357k and multiplying that by 1.39. That's a higher usual locations admits-to-nationwide admits multiplier than what most films get these days, and a good sign for One Piece. I'm been very stubborn to use a multiplier much above 1.3 (and won't for my estimates), but if it's closer to 1.4, that'd be a significant boost with admissions this high.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: One Piece Film Red - WKND Estimate
Okay, here are my estimates (yes, in range-form so some marks will be unknown until Monday). Waiting to crunch some numbers further isn't likely to change the ranges by much, and I have some house cleaning today.

Image

Saturday: ¥1.22-¥1.30 billion ($9.2-9.9 million) / 875,000-905,000 admissions.
Sunday: ¥950 million-¥1 billion ($7.1-7.5 million) / 675,000-700,000 admissions.
Opening Weekend: ¥2.17-2.30 billion ($16.3-17.4 million) / 1.55-1.61 million admissions.

Low-end determined giving Aeon less admissions than Toho, multiplying by 1.28, and using an atp of ¥1400 (below Gold).
High-end determined giving Aeon equal admissions as Toho, multiplying by 1.32, and using an atp of ¥1430 (similar to some recent openers).

Some records and achievements (depending on the actual):

-1st or 2nd Biggest OD Ever (Revenue and Admissions).
-2nd or 3rd Biggest OW Ever (Revenue and Admissions).
-Second Film to sell over 1.5 Million Admissions on OW.
-Fifth Film to earn over ¥2 Billion on OW, and only the third without previews included.
-Third Film to earn over ¥1 Billion in One Day.
-Second Film to sell 900,000+ Admissions in One Day.
-Third Film to sell 800,000+ Admissions in One Day.
-Second Biggest Opening Saturday (Revenue and Admissions).
-Second Biggest Opening Sunday (Revenue and Admissions).
-2nd Biggest OW for an Animated Film (Revenue and Admissions).
-New August OW Record (Revenue and Admissions) by over 100% (r and a).
-New Franchise OW Record (Revenue and Admissions) by over 50% (r).
-New Toei OW Record (Revenue and Admissions) by over 50% (r).

Revised. :mer:

More support on why we might need to consider non-Demon Slayer records/achievements moving forward. (Or just kinda ignore Demon Slayer on them.) Films (like this one) could sell 100% of all their seats all weekend and it still wouldn't be enough to challenge all kinds of records DS holds because it's just not mathematically doable under normal box-office conditions. It's like counting to ten with your hands with nine fingers.

Can a record be broken if there physically aren't enough seats to break it?

This has shown the OD record is vulnerable (and might have been broken), largely thanks to Demon Slayer opening on Friday while One Piece opened on Saturday, but beyond it, the Saturday, Sunday, and various other records can't really be reached. And that's both amazing (showcasing Demon Slayer and showing what the BO could produce), and sort of disappointing because it can't exactly happen again (the first 3-4 weeks, in particular) so everything will be vying for second all the time.

Hi Corpse
Can you post the Obon dates please? Just so we know when the holiday period would start boosting the holdovers' daily performances. These are always fun to track. Many thanks.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: One Piece Film Red - WKND Estimate
I think maybe, just maybe the next One Piece movie (which would probably be the last one with the manga running) could beat DS record, maybe?

Imagine something like Hayao Miyazaki directing the last One Piece film? XD I know it's impossible, but you know like maybe haha.

But something that could potentially do it is a sort of ending to One Piece that's canon and unique to the movie. I think that could do numbers.

I think if they had adapted a canon part of the story (like Kimetsu and JJK) did, the movie could have done a bit better. Example a One Piece ROCKS film would be amazing.

But even if the last OP movie in 3-4 years can't be Demon Slayer's record in Japan, maybe, just maybe it could worldwide. (The One Piece Netflix series could increase dramatically the "low" number of fans it has outside Japan, it's amazing how OP is so unpopular in the US for example -relatively speaking, but i think I saw it sold the same as Komi can't communicate in the US in 2021 or something like that..)

Anyway, glad film RED did well. Now make a canon movie, you cowards!

It most likely can't. Even leaving aside the matter of DS being the more popular series in jp (though that gets somewhat alleviated by OP opening on saturday instead, as well as premium shows), DS' OW is almost a japan market cap. With the ridicolous attendance you basically need those seats to even dream of matching it, and even if you could get those seats (which only happened due to covid removing competition), you actually need to fill them afterwards.

That said I'm not sure how one can even make an OP canon film, assuming you mean some sort of manga adaptation. The arcs are way too long (how does one even fit a nearly 100 chapter arc into a film?), it simply cannot be done without major cuts. OP:Red is about as close an OP film can be to canon as possible, residing outside the manga timeline but introducing info that is "canon" to the story (i.e. Shanks background), even moreso when Shanks is a character we know very little about and the film is basically the first time fans are getting a proper introduction to his story (and the marketing realises just as well, which is why the main poster of the film features a huge shanks, much bigger than Uta herself despite it realistically being her film moreso than Shanks').
