Thanks! I just added how many admissions were gained over the past week to the post too. That way people can maybe get an idea of where a film could be headed.

Still not confident they'll be able generate much interest beyond what the first film had for Across the Spider-Verse, but the effort Sony's putting into it is worth mentioning.

LiSA's theme song for the movie released a few hours ago and is currently #3 on iTunes. Spotify and other charts haven't updated yet.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Marvel & DC Box Office History
I haven't updated this chart all year, so here it is! All 2023 entries (and Black Adam from Dec. 2022) have been added and highlighted for quick reference as the chart has gotten quite long.

I don't want to speak too soon, but Across the Spider-Verse's reservations actually look pretty solid this weekend. It has several marked (50%+) showings (or close to it) for Friday and Saturday at some of the busier theaters. It'll definitely out-open/out-gross the first one, but I don't want to predict anything yet as to not unfairly raise expectations. I'll keep an eye on it ahead of the weekend though.

Flash also opens this weekend, but reservations don't look as good.

Looking around, I get the sense that Across the Spider-Verse might be preparing for a breakout, and could compete with the post-OT live-action films. I'll be surprised if Friday alone doesn't come in higher than the first film's OW. The first film didn't do well at the box-office in Japan, so I wish I could find home video and/or streaming and/or broadcast numbers for it to see if it caught on after it left theaters.

Seating is tight this weekend, so it might be a result of fewer showings/seating than a typical big release that makes it appear stronger than it might be... but it's looking quite good. It doesn't necessarily need a huge number of seats if it does ~50%+ capacity with what it has at key locations.

It is receiving the most seats (and showings) this weekend still though, just not a large amount due to the crowded market, so there might be a lower ceiling placed on the opening weekend. The Little Mermaid only in its second weekend, and since it opened well, it's keeping a good amount of seating. Flash is opening this weekend, too, and while it's only receiving the third highest amount of seats this weekend, it's enough to keep a solid amount from Spidey. And Mario is still doing well, not to mention a few other holdovers that are still doing enough business to hold onto a reasonable number of seats.

What do you think, JustLurking? You've been good a gauging OW potential based on reservations. (No pressure! Haha.)

Only just saw that you asked for my input, what an honor! :P

Big locations looked pretty good at a bunch of theaters I checked earlier today, some of the rural locations felt a bit sketchy but it looks solid overall, I'm not sure about it coming in that high but I would say it's plausible

Off my gut I would say it goes a bit lower than that but I haven't really been thorough enough to be confident on it, still it will be a very good OW for it

Even if it goes below I feel like the saturday sales are pretty solid, I don't think it will be as frontloaded as typical CBM, I would expect sat to top friday, maybe 600-700M on the 3-days? if things go well

I was going to say ¥500 million (3-day) looks like a minimum. I think your range looks good just hours from the first showings. ¥700 million would be 176% higher than the original's 3-day opening (¥253.7 million), and be almost 90% of its entire total.

Looks like 150M OD or so so yeah, 500-600M OW probably.

I'd go a little lower around ¥135/140 million, but yeah, somewhere around there. Not quite enough for the OD to beat the original's OW (Sat/Sun) alone, but not far off either. Should break ¥500 million over the 3-day and double up on the original's 3-day opening. The first film missed ¥1 billion, but this one has a good shot at doing ¥2 billion+.

The Flash is a pretty big bomb. It's on par with Little Mermaid's second Friday (when including Aeon) and will debut in third place behind Spider-Verse and Little Mermaid this weekend. I wouldn't rule out a fourth place debut either since Mario will see huge jumps on Sat/Sun and offset the gap from Friday pretty easily.

I mean, DC films have been performing especially poorly in recent years so it's not exactly surprising, but still... They don't often see big Saturday bumps, so taking that into account, it may only be aiming for ¥250 million or so over the 3-day. It'll definitely miss ¥1 billion with that. I'd predict ¥700/800 million total. The Batman (a disappointing ¥1.19 billion total) has been the only DC film since 2019 to gross over ¥1 billion.

I'd say more or less in line with what we're seeing everywhere for flash. The film is not doing well. Good thing the universe is about to be rebooted I guess...

That means theater count, right? What about screen count.

Wonder if it gets IMAX...

Pretty poor sunday for SV, dang. TLM had a rough 2nd weekend in general, it's not going to even come close to 5b now.

Not surprised by TLM's weak hold. Corpse mentioned that Disney+ is making their films much more frontloaded than before. You have the fan surge on OW but not nearly as many casuals attending the weeks afterwards as they'd rather wait to watch for free. As for Spiderverse, it seems it has a similar issue reaching beyond the core fanbase.
