Nice leggy performance there, and great result for Klockworx (rarely have films reach ¥1 billion). Will probably hit a 9x multiplier. Speaking of which, I'll put together and share 2022's top multipliers later today. Meant to have this up a couple weeks ago.

Dragon Ball Super Hero having 1.90 time its opening weekend gross at the end of its second weekend at the box office, is it unusual for it to have that, b/c films including Marvel ones gross well over 2.0 at the second weekend at the box office. Is there any reason for such, and is it a new or unusual phenomenon?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Summer 2022 (July/August) Release Sche
It's, overall, fairly rare for a film to be below a 2x multiplier after its second weekend. There can be some examples where it's "normal", take Doraemon or Crayon Shin-Chan for example. They open a couple weeks before a holiday frame, so their weekdays until then are dismal as they skew so young. So, their two week totals are generally at or below a 2x. But aside from very young skewing films opening a week or two before holiday periods, or very fan-driven franchises (like Kaman Rider) that are super-frontloaded (by Japan standards), it's generally a rare occurence.

Dragon Ball had two key favors on why it missed a 2x after two weeks. First, it's a frontloaded franchise. Second, June is a very weak month that provides zero support.

That said, it should be able to recover a little bit. It received a 4D expansion this weekend, and so far, the Saturday hold is looking decent. It'll be a temporary "boost", but any help is needed. Still, I really doubt it finishes much above a 4x multiplier in the end. Battle of Gods did 4.38, Resurrection F did 3.89 (yikes), and Broly did 4.92. And all three of them had major holiday support early in their runs. A 4x for Super Hero would be kinda respectable, IMO, given it has no holiday support.

Are there any upcoming live-action films being released in China?

Quite good outside Japan for JJK0. Probably had some markets where COVID probably hindered it a bit too.

It seems the Dragon ball CGI animation was intentional and not due to lack of staff. There's also another movie or animation project coming.

Question to Kanroji or anyone who tracks that data. Does anyone have a list of top Japanese movies or Animation outside Japan and USA?

As far as I can see, nothing.

It's the anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on 1st July, so they are re-releasing a ton of pro-China propaganda movies, including The Captain; The Battle at Lake Changjin; Water Gate Bridge; Wandering Earth; My People, My Country; Chinese Doctors; My Country, My Parents; Operation Red Sea; and of course, 1921. Obviously they're trying to stoke national pride (and to blur the lines between that and love for the party) while also boost the totals for soft power wins on the worldwide gross charts.

So, apart from small films like Octonauts: The Caves of Sac Actun and some Indian flick, the whole of July is one large top-up of cinematic brainwash for the Chinese people.

39 Live-Action Japanese film are pending a date. Bit Shangai Film group doesn't take any initiative to release them as they are afraid of unstable loss. The most probable will be "The Last 10 Years" in coming months.

Doraemon: 2021 Nobita's Little Star War is currently playing in the market, well it got side-kick from Bad Guys which has Wider Audience. Currently running in the total of ¥82M (Bad Guys started with ¥29.9M, & running to the total of ¥323M, Overall defeating Soul's Multiple (¥36.17M/¥376.18M)

Yokai Watch 2018 film was a hugeeeeeee flop, earning only ¥830K. This gave red card problem to Doraemon (i.e only one month of release), which Distributor is still trying to get an extension (Doraemon films normally plays for three months)

Doraemon films is a box office feast in Dragon Boat Festival, like Golden Week in Japan. But, well yes Bad Guys having door to door WOM makes the title to have a huge advantage over Doraemon...

I am working on it. It will take time. Just for rough idea, No.1 in each market,

Europe &Middle East (in USD) is under Pokemon 1998.

Nordic Region is under Spirited Away

South America is under Dragon Ball Super Broly ($37.5M), where Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 stand at ($6.5M), Demon Slayer at ($5M).

Middle East (local currency) &Africa under Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0.

SAARC is under Demon Slayer, will go Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 soon.

Oceania is under Pokemon 1998.

China &SAR is under Your Name.

Russia &CIS under Demon Slayer.

South East Asia is a mess, Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 (Malaysia, Cambodia, Mongolia), Doraemon 2021 Nobita's Little Star War (Vietnam), Stand By Me Doraemon (Indonesia), Demon Slayer (Thailand, Singapore, Laos)

Special News:
→ Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 is the first Japanese Film to receive a wide release in Africa, grossing $300K (By Africa, I didn't include Egypt, it falls on Middle East)
→ Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 is the only Japanese Film to win two consecutive weekend in Saudi Arabia (Thanks because Dr Strange didn't got released on Saudi Arabia)

Super Hero had a soft drop from Saturday to Saturday. I take it that because it opened in 4DX today that Sunday will see a decrease this time around?

Also this Dolby expansion next week....is that anything worthwhile? Will it have any notable effect on. Ext weekends drop?

Sunday might come in a bit below Saturday as a result, yeah. But, this has set it up for that <30% third weekend drop I mentioned. Down about 28% at the usual locations today in admissions, that's probably sub-25% in revenue due to the 4DX ticket prices. So Sunday would need a fairly sizable drop to miss a 30% weekend drop.

Keeps its chances at ¥2.5 billion alive.

The Dolby Cinema expansion won't be a impactful since there are only 7 of them in Japan. But, their tickets are expensive, and if attendance is high enough at them, they do provide some benefit (a few percent, perhaps, in this case).

And thanks for responding Algren and Kanroji.

I don't know, -28% with a 4D expansion+giveaway is pretty bad I think. Sunday tends to decrease over saturday on giveaway weekend, so something like 48-50k sun for 37-40% drop seems plausible imo.

Top gun keeps being really good.

Apparently Shin Ultraman only had a 25% drop from last Saturday. It's been suffering some 30-40% drops on the weekdays so the uptick is nice. It's supposedly guaranteed to cross 4 Billion Yen tomorrow. I'd like to see it at least hit 3 million in attendance. It'll probably be at about 2.68 tomorrow, so I understand that's quite a hike.

4DX tickets carry a ¥1200 surcharge in addition to whatever you payed for the admission. So, if you bought a general admission (¥1900), it'd be ¥4100 (the highest ticket possible except for premium/luxury box seating). If you're a college or high school student, it'd cost you ¥2700 instead (at most places). The cheapest option available would be ¥2200 (every admission is at least ¥1000).

Standard Tickets:
¥1900 - General
¥1500 - College
¥1000-1500 - High School Student
¥1200 - Seniors
¥1000 - Age 3 through Jr. High Student
¥1000 - Disabled

Premium Tickets:
¥2200-4100 - 4DX/MX4D (¥1200 surcharge)
¥1600-2500 - IMAX (¥600 surcharge)
¥1500-2400 - Dolby Cinema (¥500 surcharge)
¥1400-2300 - 3D (¥400 surcharge)
¥1200-2100 - Dolby ATMOS (¥200 surcharge)

Special Tickets:
¥4000-4900 - Premier Luxury Seating (¥3000 surcharge)
¥2000-2900 - Premier Box Seating (¥1000 surcharge)
¥1400 - Late-Showings (Showings after 8pm generally)
¥1200 - Discount Days (1st of the Month or Day of the Week/Month per chain)
¥1200 - Female Patrons on Wednesdays (Depending on location)

This is roughly what you see at most major chains.

Now 4.2%

Do we know how many 4DX theatres the movie opened in?

I believe there are 46 nationwide (not 100% certain, but it's around there), so I'd assume all/most of them. The Sunday was pretty good. Down another ~28% or so, just like Saturday, so taking into account the 4DX/MX4D expansion, I'm going to presume it dropped in the low 20s this weekend (~21-23%?) in revenue.

Now, is roughly a 28% drop in admissions from an expansion AND a giveaway (wasn't aware of this, so thanks JustLurking) good? A little questionable. It's only in the third week, so it's not like it was going to remain stable or anything, but a better drop would have been more encouraging because next weekend will probably drop hard (the Dolby Cinema expansion will help a little bit, but not that much). Still... don't want to be negative here. This is a "good" third weekend in the end, especially if the 4D share comes in high to get that revenue drop as close to 20% as it can.
