That is cool Corpse you created a new category of phenomenon which is ¥15 Billion, what made you decide to do it?

Ha, I just posted the explanation above having missed your comment.

In short: More films are getting closer to that milestone, but still not quite being able to reach it, so I figure it's probably time to add it as a more "realistic" milestone for the charts. It's still very difficult and shouldn't be expected for films to reach it (as I said, only 6 films in 15 years have done so), but it's at least becoming slightly more in sight lately.

I also added a new tier to the Opening Weekend Chart I went over above. In short: Since Japan is on 3-day weekends now, ¥1 billion is easier to achieve on opening weekend, so we need a new top tier as a result I believe. I made it ¥3 billion instead of ¥2 billion because Conan did it last month (and Mario did ¥2.5 billion over its holiday boosted second weekend). But that was a crazy opening that shouldn't be expected. I think this will be a very, VERY rare milestone to hit, but we know it's possible now.

I completely agree. Japan was often the biggest international market for Disney films in the past, and to see such a reversal of fortune is really quite tragic. I'm surprised Disney isn't panicking more or trying to save their status ASAP in the market.

I don't know if they would give theatrical releases a full year without going on Disney+, but they should at the very least consider it an option even if just for subscribers in Japan. Other streaming platforms already utilize geographic content blocking, and Japan in the past has already been conditioned to theatrical release dates months behind the rest of the world.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Walt Disney Box Office History
Here is Walt Disney's box-office history ahead of The Little Mermaid.

Disney hasn't had a single film open above ¥500 million since 2019 in Japan, and they've only had one film even get on the Totals chart since then too (Avatar 2 down near the bottom there), so they really need something to turnaround their dreadful situation in the market.

If Mermaid can do Maleficent or Cinderella numbers, that'd be a start at least, but they're really overdue (and in need) of a ¥10 billion earner.

Walt Disney Box-Office History:

Thanks for sharing, KNY. I need to see if the other chains are bumping them up ¥100 too.

This is the second general ticket price increase in 30 years (first back in 2014). In this case, ticket prices will remain the same for students (elementary through university), seniors citizens, people with disabilities, as well as on some discount days.

Also, The Little Mermaid isn't opening until June 9th. So its opening will see the price increase effect. I think we all assume it was opening this weekend since Disney has been on the day-and-date train the last couple years. June 9th is a better date, same as Aladdin in 2019, since it's two weeks closer to Summer Vacation. And if it's big in the US, let's say near/over $150 million over its four-day OW, it could generate some interest here, and it gives Disney something to market over the two weeks.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest to 10 Billion
Based on my estimates for the week, including this weekend, I have Mario hitting ¥10 billion on Sunday or Monday. 9th fastest film overall to reach this major milestone, and 2nd fastest for an imported (Hollywood) film.

Weekdays still leave much to be desired, and it continues to lose pace with many films below it on this chart as a result (several more will catch it soon), but it's averaging holds around 25/30% which is still solid and will keep it going for a while. Still looks to finish around ¥12-13 billion at its current pace (¥12.86 billion needed to crack the All-Time Top 25).

Fastest Films to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster Milestone):

_____
20 days - One Piece Film Red (2022)

So based on the weekdays, is Mario skewing very young? I assume it's also not playing as strong in the rural areas.

It's skewing young, but not super young like Doraemon or something. It's doing roughly a third of its weekly business on the weekdays, which is a firm younger skew. Younger-skewing films also perform well in rural areas, which Mario is also doing.

It's not skewing so young to greatly lower its avg. ticket price by much at least, but it is skewing young enough that it puts a bit of a limit on the box office since the weekdays are suffering. It's having strong weekends, but the key to achieving truly great totals (like up to/over ¥15 billion) is having good weekdays too. The all-time biggest films, or films that perform well for many months, have close to a 50:50 split between weekdays and weekends (some have been almost exactly 50:50 to the decimal point, like Demon Slayer which was 50.2:49.8, IIRC).

The idea is that the closer a film is to a 50:50 split, the greater its appeal is to every demographic. They're able to benefit from bringing in people who'd check it out during every daypart of every day of the week. Business isn't limited to certain days at certain times.

Thank you for the explanation. In the domestic opening weekend, 62% of Mario's audience was between age 18-34. I guess the audience demographics are similar or even younger in Japan.

Might be hard to say this exactly since Japan is old and 15-29 (closest comparison) only accounts for ~14% of its population.

Here is Japan's population breakdown by age as of 2021 (has trended older, 50+, since):

0-14 (~15.0 million; 12.0%): Very young skewing; daycare, children.
15-29 (~18.0 million; 14.3%): Younger skewing; teens, students, young-adults.
30-49 (~31.5 million; 25.1%): Adult-skewing; college and younger-aged workers.
50-69 (~32.0 million; 25.5%): Older skewing; average-aged workers.
70-84 (~22.0 million; 17.5%): Very old skewing; older-aged workers, senior citizens.
85+ (~7.0 million; 5.6%): Approaching retirement, retirees.

And here is roughly how a film performs (by percentage) when it skews toward these age groups:

In-Season Months (Mar., Apr., July, Aug., Nov., Dec.): [During Holidays/Holiday Periods]
0-14: Very strong weekdays, often accounting for ~65-70% (sometimes higher) of their weekly earnings.
15-29: Stronger weekdays that can accounting for ~50-60% of their weekly earnings.
30-49: The most balanced age-group for these months, with a slight skew towards better weekdays.
50-69: Weaker weekdays, often coming in below 50% of their weekly earnings.
70-84: Very weak weekdays, typically accounting for around ~35-40% of their weekly earnings.
85+: Minimal differences here since most people in this age-group are nearing retirement, or already retired, so are sort of already on holiday if you will. Slight skew towards weekdays.

Note: November is included in the "In-Season" months, but it's by far the weakest of them and usually only applies to a film when they're released in the last week of the month, four weeks out from Christmas/New Year. Personally, I'd exclude it and label it an "off-season" month, but it usually comes in just slightly above the "off-season" months in earnings in most years.

Off-Season Months (Jan., Feb., May, June, Sept., Oct.): [No/Little Holiday Support]
0-14: Very weak weekdays, often only accounting for ~20% (sometimes less) of their weekly earnings.
15-29: Weaker weekdays, typically accounting for ~35/40% or so of their weekly earnings.
30-49: The most balance age-group once again, with just a slight skew toward better weekends.
50-69: Stronger weekdays, often accounting for ~50-60% of their weekly earnings.
70-84: Very strong weekdays which could account for ~60-70% of their weekly earnings.
85+: Optimal weekday performances, not unusual to see weekday shares accounting for ~70-75% of their weekly earnings.

Based on this, with Mario doing about a third of its weekly business over the weekdays (32% last week) in May (off-season), I'd say its biggest age group is 15-29, followed by 0-14 and then 30-49.

That is a very helpful guide, Corpse. I noticed that Mario's Mondays have been unusually strong these past few weeks (including today). Someone online said it was because of miscellaneous school vacations?

I honestly don't know and I wouldn't go off of what anyone says. I believe it's a big question mark and predictions are sheer guess work. Japan can behave very differently than other big Asian markets like China and Korea, too, so can't always set expectations that way either.

Pre-2020, I would have expected a high total not unlike Beauty, Aladdin, and Alice. But now? Disney is in such a bad state in Japan (theatrically), I wouldn't be surprised if it bombed anymore because every Disney film has (or greatly disappointed) since 2020. Except for Marvel, I guess, but their totals have always been low in Japan and they can't really drop much.

If any Disney film is to get the studio back on its feet in Japan, it should be this one. It's quintessential Disney. Largely unknown cast aside (for the market), which can be a big issue, it checks all the success boxes.

*Fingers crossed*

It opens June 9th, same weekend that Aladdin opened. We'll get an early idea of what might happen on June 6/7th when reservations go live.

According to http://www.kogyotsushin.com/archives/alltime/, Top Gun Maverick finally surpassed The Last Samurai as Tom Cruise highest grossing film in Japan in Yen, thus not having that annoying tie.

And Maverick is still in theatre after a full whole year! Even Suzume which released almost 6 months later already end its run with ¥14.79B. Slam Dunk has ¥0.46B to catch up with Suzume but it's already drop from top ten weekend ranking so it's gonna be very hard to climb up.
Meanwhile, Mario hit ¥10B on Sunday.

I think they dropped Suzume from theaters too soon. Should have kept it playing until it hit ¥15 billion.

It took almost 3 months to get that ¥0.01 billion! It was at ¥13.70 billion since the first week of March. :funny:

Glad that tie is broken now though. 365 days in theaters complete.

And thanks for some of the weekend numbers, Kanroji! Nice final (29th) weekend for Suzume. Yeah, couldn't get to ¥15 billion, but it finished much higher than it was looking at the start of the year.
