Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (09/10-11); Charts Update
Here is the Silver Week schedule again this year, and when I believe One Piece Film Red will achieve its next milestones over the holiday period:

Silver Week 2022:

9/17 - Weekend (Overtakes Weathering With You for #13 All-Time)
9/18 - Weekend
9/19 - National Holiday (Exceeds ¥15 billion, becoming only the 13th film to ever do so)
9/20 -
9/21 -
9/22 -
9/23 - National Holiday (Overtakes both Ponyo and Avatar for #11 All-Time)
9/24 - Weekend
9/25 - Weekend (Exceeds ¥16 billion, becoming only the 11th film to ever do so)

Just eyeballing I'm not really feeling +50%, maybe I'm wrong though. Did something happen with top gun today? It had the usual strong holds throughout the week but then just sort of collapsed with a near -50% today.

Saturday reservations are up 92% versus last Saturday. That's clearly very high, but probably does suggest that a ~50% increase this weekend is, perhaps, close to the ceiling. Sunday will be slightly inflated due to Monday being a holiday, too, remember, which will help the overall weekend even more.

Looks like Silent Parade (the third film in the Galileo series) will be the biggest opener in over a month, too. It did really well on Friday, and Saturday presales are solid. Could see it doing ¥300/350 million over the weekend, and achieve a four-day around ¥600/700 million. Should give 2022 another film in the ¥2-3 billion range.

Oh, and Top Gun: Maverick took a pretty big hit to its seating/showtimes on Friday due to two bigger openers (namely Silent Parade), explaining its rather big drop. Saturday presales are also down a good bit versus last week, so this weekend could see the worst hold (which will probably still be a rather "normal" hold) of its run.

I also just saw there are some double feature showings with it and its predecessor this weekend (likely over Silver Week). In fact, based on the usual locations, the double-feature has more seats and showings than TGM itself. I don't know how this will be handled in calculating earnings. Will half go to TGM, for example? We'll find out on Tuesday.

With prices increasing across industries in Japan. from the most essential like food to the least.

Can we expect a price increase for tickets? how would a 10% price increase affect moviegoers
habits?

Corpse, you've said earlier that Japanese people are price sensitive. But by how much? And would the price increase in food along with stagnant wages effect theaters regardless?

A 10% increase in movie tickets, all at once, would be pretty severe, IMO. From ~1993 to 2014, tickets only increased once (in 2014) by ¥100 (or 5.5%) in ~20 years. A sudden 10% jump (¥200 increase) would very likely deter casual/general audiences, especially families, from going to see a lot of films, I would imagine, with discount days becoming even busier than they are already.

Remember that wages have barely gone up in Japan since the 90s since the market has been stagnant economically. Little/no inflation in 30 years. With prices remaining the same for pretty much everything, so, to, have wages. So, wages would need to see an increase across most (all) industries as well to account for any sudden price increases.

The good news is that there isn't really an alternative to going to the movies, so theaters as a major means of entertainment should remain high either way. You can stay at home, sure, and wait 6 months to a year for really popular movie to become available on home video, but that wouldn't be ideal. And most Japanese households don't have some massive TV or home entertainment system to somewhat replicate the theatrical experience.

Most people get annoyed/frustrated when prices go up every couple of years (or more recently, every couple of months) for things they regularly buy in the U.S. and probably most other major markets, but imagine if things you bought for the same price every day/week for 15, 20, or even 30 years see an increase (and your pay has remained the same).

That's going to really, REALLY piss off a lot of people. If wages increase to match whatever the increase in prices becomes, sure, that's fine since it balances the price increase out, but until that's worked out, it'll be a serious issue in Japan.

Thank you Corpse. Although this is a global problem right now, I think its very uncharted territory for Japan. It'll be interesting to see how Japanese people can cope with these changes.

For relevance these are some of the things I found about the price increases.

Price increases Starting this fall (NHK)

Spoiler: show

Survey of price increases

https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/fe92a ... b5780f952e
over 20,000 items increased price in the last 8 months. And still more to increase in the following months - year.
https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/ab3c3 ... 561ecf75e7
Electricity prices soar and companies are planning to remove price caps by November. Some people are expecting it to triple the cost.

And according to a comment on 5ch even vending machines increased by 10 yen. 100>110.

As for Manga, Shueisha apparently will raise prices 8-10% (depending on magazine demographic) for volumes starting November. Which is a first on its history I think.

These are some of what I found. And yes some Japanese people are pissed. The Japanese Government urged companies to increase wages. So we might see some relieve hopefully.

Great post. Thanks.

I imagine there will be many non-imported items (or items that require little imported products to make) seeing their first price increase in decades (or ever). And yes, companies will have to increase wages. Many haven't in decades, again, as there has been no need to as the market has been stagnant, but if people are expected to suddenly pay 10-20%+ more for things off the same pay they've had for decades, then, yeah, they'll clearly need an increase.

Ah so that's it, not so much that it took a big hit but its ticket sold are split with the double feature version.

Anyway saturday looks like +35%ish, last giveaway sunday was down about 20% IIRC but with monday being a holiday maybe -10% or matches this time, +10-20%ish weekend. Probably delays 15b to tuesday instead.

There's also a major typhoon that is going to, potentially, impact Sunday evening and Monday (more so Monday since it moves up through the urban prefectures then).

Saturday was up ~35-40% versus last week. Not as high as I was predicting, but obviously still a lot and impressive. ¥15 billion is still possible on Monday, though Tuesday looks more likely.

And I haven't mentioned this in a while but its running total is still outpacing every film except for Demon Slayer, Spirited Away, and Harry Potter. It'll fall behind Your Name., Frozen, and Howl's Moving Castle in time (Week 9/10), but it's not expected to outgross any of these films (plus Titanic and Princess Mononoke) and remains ahead of those (Bayside Shakedown 2 and Harry Potter 2) it's aiming to outgross to earn its #9 spot on the All-Time list.

Stronger Sunday than I was expecting, up about 5% versus last week, which keeps the chance that it hits ¥15 billion on Monday alive and perhaps even likely again. Holiday Mondays usually aren't much weaker than Sundays, especially for a film that has some younger appeal (children or students). Just need to keep an eye on the major typhoon and how it potentially impacts business.

Unfortunately, the system bugged out sometime around (or before) 7pm since that update is the same as the end of day update... So, Monday is certainly a lot higher than it appears. Not enough for ¥15 billion on Monday, I don't believe, but it's now within ¥100 million, maybe even ¥50 million.

I'll have the Monday estimate (going a fair bit high to account for the missing ~20%) up shortly. Been busy.

And note: With Monday being a holiday, actuals will be delayed until Tuesday.

Monday is a rough estimate since the system used to track admissions bugged out last night. I don't believe it, or the weekend frame, were quite strong enough to get it to ¥15 billion on Monday, Day 45, but it was a strong holiday weekend regardless. AND we have another 3-day holiday weekend coming up in a few days from 09/23-25 as well.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Silver Week 2022
The preliminary figure for One Piece is that it exceeded ¥14.9 billion on 10.72 million admissions on Monday. So, ¥15 billion ruled out for Monday, but without an actual figure (for now), it's hard to say if it got there on Tuesday. Since the admissions basically match with what I have estimated above, then I think the gross will also be similar (especially since the weekend frame was almost exact at ¥4m / 3,000 off).

And based on the Tuesday (up 7% vs last week), it will have broke ¥15 billion. But, we won't know officially until we get the actual figure as of Monday later today and/or an official announcement from Toei before then.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Silver Week 2022
For all those interested since it's releasing on home video in Japan on the same day. Theatrically has been the only way to see it for the past 9 months (besides piracy in some markets, I guess).

NOTE: Since Monday was a holiday, we have the updated totals as of Monday for many films, so for anything above ¥500 million, their updated total on the Top Grossing Films: 2022 chart will be as of Monday (not the Sunday above).

Just a quick note since I rarely have time to actually type up any Weekend Analysis these days:

Top Gun: Maverick's increase is a little misleading because the double-feature showings with Top Gun were added to it, and those double-feature showings didn't have any numbers reported, so it's impossible to know the difference. Either way... this will allow it to exceed ¥13 billion now. It probably was going to anyway, but this will assure it just in case.

Also, if there are any films people have questions about, like where Jurassic World 3 might be headed (I'm predicting ¥6.3 billion (~$46.5 million)) so we'll know when/if it exceeds $1 billion worldwide, feel free to ask. Until my work schedule clears up, the usual analysis where I discuss a handful of the Top 10 films is on hold.
