Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Obon Festival Wraps Up
The music has definitely helped. The songs from the movie have been dominating iTunes/Apple (they occupied
the top 7 spots the other day). And the soundtrack (with the 8 songs from the movie) debuted at #1 on Billboard and #2 on Oricon last week. Four of the songs themselves have also peaked at #1, #2, #3, #5 on Billboard, while the other three original songs have all peaked inside the top 20.

So, yeah, it's had a major influence on the films performance when so many songs and the soundtrack are dominating the charts like this. Many, or most, breakout film performances are linked to chart-topping songs/soundtracks in Japan.

And agree. Oda is making bank right now, certainly having lucrative contracts with Shueisha and Toei. The trading card game that launched last month is sold out across the nation and is going for ridiculous prices online now, the manga had its biggest sales week in three years (backlog sales are way up too), the movie is killing it at the box office (it's the most involved film he's been on yet), and the music from the film is ruling the charts.

And there's the live-action Netflix series that is close to finish filming, I think. Oda was involved with it, so I imagine he got a good payout there, too. I don't know where he finds the time for all this given he reportedly only sleeps 3 hours a day most the time.

This new manga giveaway on the 27th is actually the second one. There was the first one when it opened (3 or 4 million copies, I forget), too.

OP still seems to be trending for 265M or so today. There might still be a bit of holiday here but even so, seems very solid. This weekend can drop 54% and still hit 9 billion. 10billion by next weekend to atleast match SA speed doesn't seem hard from here, maybe even doing it by saturday to cross it faster.

I think most of the holiday boost is gone now. It is still summer vacation though, which is important to keep in mind over the next two weeks.

The Thursday is indeed quite good though. I wasn't so sure when the morning/afternoon sales were coming in, but the evening/night shows helped a lot this time.

Does seem possible it'll exceed ¥9 billion on Sunday, so ¥10 billion happening next weekend is looking doable, especially with the giveaway. Hitting the mark either next Sat or Sun will make it the second fastest film to do so.

Thursday was the first test to get an early idea of legs post-Obon, and so far, at least to make sure a big decline/collapse wasn't going to immediately happen, it passed. It had one of the better holds versus last Thursday (start of Obon and a holiday), especially when you consider how high its numbers were/are compared to the other holdovers.

-2nd Fastest Film to reach ¥8 billion.
-2nd Fastest Film to reach 6 million admissions (tomorrow).

As noted yesterday, these 2nd fastest achievements have been happening since day one, and will continue to extend up to ¥9 billion / 7 million admissions, and very possibly even ¥10 billion / 8 million admissions.

Maybe I'm missing something, but shouldn't SA have passed it on day 23?

From what I saw, it released on a friday, and you have its 4 week total at 10.75b with a 900M weekend, meaning it should have passed 10b on its 4th saturday aka d23. That would mean OP beats it if it crosses it on saturday, but only matches if it does it on saturday unless I got something wrong.

You know... I think I messed up however long ago and the week 4 total is suppose to be ¥9.75 billion (day 24). Before that, it exceeded ¥8 billion (6.6m admissions) on day 20 (the Wed. before its fourth weekend).

Because official reports say it hit ¥10 billion on day 25. How'd we miss this back during Demon Slayer's run when it obliterated that record in 10 days, and then took the 4th weekend record?

Let me do some more research.

Okay, so, a lot of Spirited Away's weekend numbers on my charts are off.

The fourth weekend (24 day total) was: ¥1,027,787,100 (+4.9%) / ¥9,774,159,948.

I'm going back now to edit all the ones that are wrong.

Okay, all of Spirited Away's weekends have been updated. By searching Biggest Second, Third, Fourth, etc. Weekends under my name under box office bash, you can find the most recent updated charts pretty easily here.

Those corrected included: Fourth Week (weekend and total), Fifth Week (weekend and total), Ninth Week (weekend), and Twelfth Week (weekend and total).

So not *too* many errors, but still enough that I feel bad not updating over the years.

Ohhh okay, that makes more sense now, I was confused lol. So only needs to do it by sunday, certainly doable! Spirited Away will probably pull ahead afterwards, but 2nd fastest to 10b is no small feat.

And how we missed it...uhhh, honestly I don't know! Probably because DS was obliterating everything so fast, there wasn't really any reason to look closer at what the pre-DS record was since it was going to be a no-contest anyway.

I do recall back during Demon Slayer's run that charlie jat posted the actual weekend numbers for Spirited Away (many of mine, compiled nearly a decade earlier, had been estimates), and I corrected some of them, but ended up forgetting/missing a few weekends (4th, 5th, 9th, and 12th) probably because we were burning through so many pages back then.

So, it's been reported that One Piece broke ¥8 billion and 5.7m admissions on Wednesday (day 12).
https://mantan-web.jp/article/20220818d ... 5000c.html

I have it ¥105m lower and 40,000 admissions lower in my estimates, so I'll go back and readjust the numbers and repost them. It's doing exceptionally well at Aeon and/or outside of the usual locations now.

Did it specify on wednesday? I saw it posted towards the end of the today, so I assumed it happened sometime on thursday unless I missed where it specified.

Even before the pandemic happened, the theater industry around the world had gradually contracted and yielded to streaming services such as HBO, Disney, and Netflix.
Surprisingly, Kimetsu and Mugen Train not only revitalized the manga industry but also the theaters in Japan. As we see, in the past 3 years, numerous records were broken. From now on, I bet marketers will apply the same formula of advertisements for new movies until its effects wane.

That's a possibility (like they announced when it hit ¥5 billion, and maybe ¥7 billion, too).

I'll keep my estimates for now, and if nothing is announced until Monday, be pleasantly surprised again if it comes in higher.

I think Super Hero has gone off Mimorin entirely now. It is still in theatres? Though I suppose we won't hear much of anything now when it's not far off ¥2.5 billion. How long until the final total is given out?

Thanks for the clarification, JustLurking!

Super Hero was dropped by a lot of theaters on the 17th. The site I used to check for theater counts for any film unfortunately shut down, and I don't know one off hand that will having it readily available. It's possible its run ended (not being in the top 25 now is a strong hint), but if not, it's in so few theaters it's barely earning anything now.

Who knows, Toei might not care if it gets to ¥2.5 billion. Remember that Battle of Gods finished with ¥2.99 billion. So, Super Hero doing ¥2.49 billion wouldn't be that strange, I suppose. The final total will either be announced around the time of the home video release, Toei's quarterly reports, but if not with either of them, we'll have to wait all the way until the end of Janurary for Eiren's report.

Cumulative Total (14-Days): ~¥8,430,302,810 ($62.9 million) / ~6,065,000

**********

Achievements after today:

-2nd Fastest Film to 6 million admissions.
-Surpasses Film Z in admissions for new franchise record.

So, it can drop as much as 62% this weekend and still exceed ¥9 billion on Sunday. A large drop is likely (coming of two giveaways and Obon), but drops over 60% are really rare. And looking at some key locations for tomorrow, I don't see an indication it'll drop anywhere nearly that big.

If I had to guess, I'd say a drop more around 45/50% can be expected, taking it up to around ¥9.2/9.3 billion, making it easily the second fastest film to exceed ¥9 billion.

And from there, exceeding ¥10 billion becomes quite easy and will likely happen over next weekend (August 27-28), which may be higher than its third weekend, making it the second fastest film to achieve uber-blockbuster status. It'll be coming out above this milestone very strong, too, so we can likely ¥11 billion, and ¥12 billion, or perhaps even higher.

Last weekend's Top 10 (top of page 855) has been updated. There was a new Paw Patrol movie that made the Top 10 (#9), but since it was released by Aeon Entertainment, and thus playing largely at their theaters which we can't track right now, it was missed.

Also, Algren, if you're reading... Sonic the Hedgehog 2 bombed today. 9th place debut on Friday at the usual locations (~45% of the market), but I'm thinking it was 10th nationwide since Tang (which was 10th) is playing in more theaters and was barely behind it.

I'm estimating it grossed about ¥20/21 million (~$150,000) on ~16,000 admissions. Saturday and Sunday will be bigger than Friday, but since it's summer vacation, they shouldn't be significantly higher. So, I'd predict an OW around ¥60 million (~$450,000) and a 3-day of ¥80 million (~$600,000).

It'll almost certainly finish below ¥500 million (<$4 million), maybe a good bit less, too, if it's skewing really young (young-skewing films generally collapse in September).

Mon. (08/15): ¥586,000,000 ($4.4 million) / 428,000
Tues. (08/16): ~¥435,000,000 ($3.3 million) / ~315,000
Wed. (08/17): ~¥400,000,000 ($3.0 million) / ~295,000 *End of Obon Festival*
Thur. (08/18): ~¥270,000,000 ($2.0 million) / ~190,000
Fri. (08/19): ~¥265,000,000 ($2.0 million) / ~185,000
Sat. (08/20): ~¥365,000,000 ($2.7 million) / ~250,000

Cumulative Total (15-Days): ~¥8,795,302,810 ($65.6 million) / ~6,315,000

**********

Big third Saturday drop as expected (post-Obon and last Sat. was boosted by start of the second giveaway (which sold out on the same day)), down around 55%. Still, it's more than enough to let it exceed ¥9 billion tomorrow (~¥9.2 billion).

As for Sunday, reservations look quite good and are higher than Saturday's at a glance. Sunday increases have become uncommon in recent years though, so I don't want to predict an increase yet, but it is looking good. If Sunday if flat with Saturday, the weekend drop will be right around the 50% mark, while a Sunday increase can keep it below 50%.

This will probably lead to an increase next weekend, too, with the major third giveaway (another manga) event.

How are the other holdovers handling the post-Obon weekend?

The bigger ones (Jurassic World 3, Kingdom II, Minions 2) are down the expected ~40/50% or so versus last week, while some of the smaller films weren't impacted as much with ~25/35% holds. With one exception... Top Gun 2 is actually up versus last Sat. (about 5%), which is remarkable. It might be inflated a bit from the giveaway that began on Monday (still a fair number of them left going into the weekend), but since that started five days ago, I think the most of this can just be attributed to the film itself. It'll overtake Kingdom II and Minions 2 to rise up to third place in its thirteenth weekend.

And the wide openers this weekend all bombed (notably Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Violence Action, looking to barely crack the Top 10 in 9th and 10th place), except for the one-week-only rerelease of the 2003 Pokémon film (likely 4th place debut).

I estimated it at ~¥4.536 billion ($34.0 million) on Wednesday, the last day of Obon Festival. Since then, I think it's right around ¥4.71 billion ($35.3 million) going into the weekend. Assuming a 40% drop, it'll be just shy or right at ~¥5 billion ($36.4 million). It should finish its run with about ¥6 billion (~$43-45 million).
