Really cool to see EEAAO break out in Japan. Hollywood portrayal of asians usually does poorly in asian countries. I think winning BP is extremely likely too on very good timing for a nice run.

Thanks for the info. Being a romance film with a built-in base released just before Spring Break will go a long way at the box office. It's a popular spot for romance films.

Early/Mid-July aside, Early/Mid-March is the best spot for a film that attracts children/families, as well as teens/young adults (primary romance film audience). (Basically any film where the audience comprises of those that'll be out of school for the holidays.) They get the almost two-week boost of Spring Break from ~March 20th into the first couple days of April, and then are usually able to thrive again when Golden Week begins on April 29th.

I think July slot would've been much better (timing well with anime like Tokyo Revengers a couple years ago). Still, we'll see what happens. Manga is a big seller but chapter releases are ridicolously sluggish so it kind of goes under the radar.

Yeah, I can't really think of a Hollywood Asian film ever doing especially well... Letters from Iwo Jima comes to mind, achieving blockbuster status in Japan, and Japan easily being its biggest market worldwide (grossed more in Japan than every other market, including the U.S., combined). I'm sure there are some others that have found success, but none are coming to mind.

EEAAO getting near/over ¥1 billion would be a notable achievement, and the opening weekend is looking to be enough to make it possible, especially if it wins Best Picture at the Oscars. Also note that the film releasing so late in Japan has heavily played in its favor, being the latest example of how delayed releases typically perform much better than releasing day-and-date or not long after the US and/or other markets.

I'm hoping with the oscar win it could break out and go for a 2-3b run hopefully (probably a bit biased here since I really loved the film but one can hope). Would be a bit of a shocker if it missed BP imho, seems to be such an overwhelming favorite this year.

It definitely needs Best Picture at a minimum, but the more major awards it picks up, the more likely that could happen. WOM itself will also play a major role, of course, so we'll need to see how holds are for a while after this weekend too. Should be an interesting one to follow.

Also note that Parasite (2020), major breakout (over ¥4 billion, gross only behind South Korea and the U.S.), and The King's Speech (2011), are the only Best Picture winners to gross over ¥1 billion in Japan since 2010...

EEAAO getting just to that mark would be significant. (We want more of course! Haha.)

Doraemon 42 saw a nice Sunday bump. I haven't done much estimating lately, so could be off, but I'm thinking it earned ~¥575-600 million ($4.2-4.4 million) on ~470,000-495,000 admissions. This is noticeably better than the most recent films, and even just comparing Sat/Sun, it likely broke ¥500 million which a Doraemon film hasn't done since 2019. This opening should be enough to get the franchise back around the ¥3.5/4 billion mark.

EEAAO dropped on Sunday, a little more than I like, but Sun. dips aren't too uncommon for adult-skewing openers, so likely too early to really say if it's an indication of things to come. Estimating around ~¥155-175 million ($1.1-1.3 million) on ~115,000-125,000 admissions. Definitely a solid debut that on its own with normal legs would get it around ¥700 million ($5 million). But with Oscar buzz, and likely Oscar wins, there's potential to reach ¥1 billion ($7/8 million) or more.

Most of the winter holdovers saw some bigger declines around 30-40% or so from the first batch of March/Spring releases taking screens/seating from them. This is normal when we enter a new box office season.

Corpse, do you know if it makes any difference if the theater chain is the one who funded the movie or not? How much did Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, and other movies benefit from being Toho properties? Could they have done the same regardless?

Toho distributing them played a major role in their success. Since Toho owns the busiest theater chain in the country, their films get priority at their locations, so it's quite the advantage. Toho is also a marketing powerhouse.

Even Demon Slayer's box-office success could be thanks to Toho. If it was just Aniplex releasing it (small distributor), it would have only gotten probably 1/3 of the theaters/screens (maybe even less) that it ended up receiving. They knew what they were doing by allowing Toho to share 50% distribution rights. Toho went all out on it because they knew the money they'd earn from it (50% of all sales from their theaters + 50% distribution rights).

Toei also let Toho in on distributing Evangelion 3.0+1.0, which got double (maybe a bit more) the amount of screens the last film did nationwide thanks to getting Toho involved with the distribution.

It's not unfair to say there's a much lower ceiling of what a film can do without Toho's involvement.

Wow, so the revenue would be severely bottlenecked if you didn't let Toho in with a big share.

It's crazy how they can decide not to show it if they don't have a further cut beyond the standard 50%; it seems like theater chains in Japan are influential. In contrast with American theater chains relationships with studios, especially Disney,

Thanks Corpse.

Toho, or any other chain, still play other films beyond their own. A big Hollywood film is going to still play pretty much everywhere and be given enough screens. And a big Shochiku or Toei release is still going to play at nearly every Toho locations, etc.

Although... all the major Hollywood studios, Disney aside, have sold their distribution rights to Japanese distributors (Toho) in the past decade, so that helps those films a lot now too.

The difference is that theaters are going to be more favorable toward their own films in the long-term. This isn't very noticeable early on in a film's run, but you'll see Toho releases have much longer runs on more screens at their locations vs other locations, and the same is true for other studios too.

Small distributors, let's say Aniplex, don't seem to have much influence or maybe just financial resources to open their films on a major nationwide scale. This is fine for fanbase or niche films like... Sword Art Online that mostly do their business in Tokyo, Osaka, and a few other urban locations, but for a film to reach a broader audience, and those in rural prefectures, it's a lot harder to find success without having some sort of deal with the major distributors that hold more influence and reach by owning the most theaters.

There aren't many independent theaters in Japan. The vast majority are owned and operated by the distributors/studios.

Aeon Cinemas is the big standout. They have the most locations and are the second busiest behind Toho. Warner Bros. used to own them (known as Warner Mycal Cinemas then), but WB sold them to AEON, co., Asia's largest retailer (malls, where most there theaters are, convenience stores, supermarkets, etc.), in 2012 (I believe). Aeon has gotten into film distribution in recent years, too, but they're smaller releases that largely play exclusively at their theaters.

So Suzume has hit the ¥14 Billion mark at ¥14.04B. It is about 190 million away from passing WWY. When will it probably surpass it?

Hmm... probably over Spring Break (March 21-April 2) at some point. I'd predict on closer to the start of the holiday period versus the end since March 21st is a national holiday which will probably get it close.

Doraemon: Nobita's Sky Utopia came in a good bit higher than I estimated, earning ¥663 million ($4.9 million) on 542,000 admissions. This is the sixth biggest opening in the series now. Very impressive, significantly higher than the last three films. ¥3.5 billion is likely, but it could very well approach/reach ¥4 billion.

I'll wait to get the exact figures before reposting the Doraemon History Charts and March OW Chart.

No numbers released for EEAAO yet.

Impressed by Doraemon. I thought Japan's declining child population would start impacting its box office gross but it doesn't look like it's happening so far.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: March 2023 Release Schedule
That was the logical explanation given how the franchise has declined since 2019, but perhaps it was mainly due to Covid. Only the youngest skewing films were really impacted in 2020/2021, so that can explain why the two films released in 2020 declined. The 2022 film actually did worse than those, however, but maybe there was still some health concern with families, and given it was a remake entry, maybe interest wasn't very high. Japan is downgrading the virus to the same category as the flu next week, so perhaps families were waiting for such a decision before taking their kids back to the theaters.

But yeah, the opening for the new film is pretty much back to the franchise norm. It's still below the films near the end of the 2010s, but it's a significant improvement over the past three.
