Post Re: Japan Box-Office: DBS:Super Hero Debuts (Sun Admin Track
JustLurking mentioned that some Broly animators (and the director, I believe) moved over to One Piece, presumably for the Wano Arc which began back in 2019 and is still ongoing. And with OP being a weekly show, they wouldn't have much (if any) time to spend on anything else. Not to mention One Piece Film Red is opening in August, which would have taken any non-anime time they did have.

Makes sense, I suppose, to go the faster and cheaper route with a CGI Dragon Ball film if animators/resources weren't there for a Broly-esque style of film again. But you're also risking a loss in revenue since domestic CGI films very rarely succeed (at least on the same scale as traditional animation). However, if it does over ¥2.5 billion, which it should (¥3 billion isn't impossible), the profit margin might be comparable to the last couple films given the (likely) cheaper production costs this time.

DBS:Super Hero : ¥670M / 498K or 500K admits

TC is 407 (incl. 38 IMAX)

No.1 in admits (though disputed) but revenue actuals is needed to confirm No.1 in revenue

So ¥670 million is the actual?

Is there a source?

¥670M is the reported closest figure to actual. I think TGM-DBS difference should not be more than ¥1M or so (???)

The initial actual reports are rounded, so it'll be between ¥664.5-674.4 million (rounded to ¥670 million) when the final figure it reported soon. The 500,000 admissions is likely rounded right now, too, and will be between 494,500-504,499. If you've seen 498,000, then that's probably right.

A little odd the actual-actual hasn't been released yet, just the preliminary (rounded) number.

And Top Gun's total coming in below what was reported by Paramount (or whoever) Is likely due to the exchange rate....

The Yen just hit a 24-year-low versus the Dollar, and is now the weakest it's been since October 1998. And with inflation in the US still rising, and the BOJ still being stubborn, it's going to grow even weaker over the summer.

The Yen is down 15% versus the Dollar in the last 6 months (most being since March).

I am not sure if 500K admits for DBS is correct but I believe 498K is somehow more accurate as pointed by you but in news reporting at "livedoor" Breakdown is 300K Sat + 200K Sun. DBS supposed to have defeated Top Gun both in admits and revenue (Though, I think revenue is a bit close)

Well that top link says it's exceeded ¥670 million.

Do they not know but know that Top Gun did ¥669 million and as Super Hero was #1 that's why say it's succeeded it?

DBS : ¥669,890,220

I was correct difference was less than ¥1M (was close to TGM's 3rd Weekend: ¥669,128,700)

If it was going to come that close I'd rather top gun took it for 5 consecutive #1s, shame :P

Talk about close! I believe there have been a few closer races for #1, but nothing so high being this close comes to mind.

I want to wait until the actuals come in for the weekend admissions, then I'll repost the Dragon Ball History and June OW Charts.

So if Super Hero did ¥670,000 from a 357,000 weekend on Mimorin and today is at 37,500 then can we say a ¥70 million Monday?

Mondays are Aeon Cinema Discount Day, so the avg. ticket price will be a tiny bit lower. But yeah, ¥70 million is a good estimate.

Dragon Ball Super's admissions came to 497,526. Rather than reposting all the associated charts (the franchise chart, the June OW chart, etc.), I've just gone back to edit all of them on this page or the last page. So, if interested, just go back and check them again.

One of the closest battles for #1 we've ever seen, and I can't even recall any two films competing so closely for the top spot while grossing this much.

>Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero managed to just barely edge out the weekend victory in its debut by a mere ¥761,520 ($5,641)! The 21st entry in the Dragon Ball franchise, and second in the Super series, sold 497,526 admissions over the weekend across 407 screens. We've discussed it a good deal this weekend, so I won't go on for too long. In short... this is a good opening (see various charts above), but it is down 30% versus Resurrection F, 18% versus Broly, and 2% versus Battle of Gods. All three of its predecessors opened before a major holiday period, which this one didn't have the benefit of since Toei was hacked which delayed the film by 2 months. Expect a finish between ¥2.5-3 billion (lower-range more likely).

>Top Gun: Maverick delivered another amazing hold, but what would have been a likely 5-week run at #1 was snapped (but it'll regain the top spot next weekend). The film sold 418,000 admissions in its third weekend, bringing its three-week admissions up to 2,839,650. I wish I could give a projection here, but this is a perfect example of why (and how) that's just not doable in Japan sometimes. The third weekend is only down 19% versus its opening weekend, so it's performing at a level that is going to take a few more weeks to get an idea of a finish. That said... it's likely to get over ¥7/7.5 billion ($50/55 million) at this rate, and ¥8 billion ($60 million) is certainly doable. But, again, it's too early to say if that'll be its likely finish since it could go for more. We just need to wait and see.

>Shin Ultraman received a 4DX expansion this weekend, and thanks to that, it finally delivered a hold it needed earlier in its run. It hasn't held poorly by any means (averaging 30%), but expectations were a bit better following its breakout opening. This expansion has locked up ¥4 billion, and it might be able to get closer to ¥4.5 billion (~$35 million). I know ¥5 billion was being talked about, but don't think it missing that mark is disappointing. ¥4 billion+ is really, really impressive here.

>The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie shows the meaning of barely dropping in its fourth weekend! This is why I didn't want to project a finish for it last weekend, because based on last weekend, I'd say ¥1.5 billion was looking possible, but now, thanks to an event or giveaway, it'll easily exceed that. It's always hard to project finishes for films with large enough, and loyal enough, fanbases when events and/or giveaways are involved. So... who knows. Maybe it has ¥2 billion+ potential.

>Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween continues to do what it needs to do to get to ¥9 billion, and... I feel safe calling it now. In fact, there's a decent chance it'll have enough gas to get above Zero the Enforcer (¥9.18 billion) to become the second highest-grossing film in the franchise! Giving it -35% weekly drops, it'll finish around ¥9.13 billion, so just a tad better and it'll get there. The First of Blue Sapphire (¥9.37 billion) is out of range unless Toho feels the desire to get it there, but even still, this franchise being able to pull what would have been FOUR consecutive films (if last year's film wasn't hit with theater closures) in almost four consecutive years is outstanding and something that may never happen again.

>Teasing Master Takagi-san: The Movie is estimated for the weekend. I don't want to estimate ¥100 million, because I'd have to add it to the 2022 Opening Weekend Chart and have to go back and remove it if it missed. If/when its actual over the weekend frame is released, I'll go back and add it if it did come in above ¥100 million. Over the three-day though, it sold 102,758 admissions on 151 screens.

>Lesson in Murder has held very well for almost its entire run, and despite its low-opening weekend, it's guaranteed to reach the ¥1 billion milestone now, maybe even ¥1.1 billion. Might seem like a "so what?" situation, but it's definitely not for a small distributor like KlockWorx. And the box-office can always use more films not expected to gross ¥1 billion get to the mark.

>Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpuden is going to reach ¥2 billion; it'll be a crawl since it barely makes anything on the weekdays, but the weekends will be just enough to get it there. This is notable since many other very young skewing franchises, like Doraemon or Pokémon, have dropped off in the market in recent years, almost certainly due to the changing demographics. It might be because Crayon Shin-chan was never as big as most of the others so it's not noticeable yet, but let's remain optimistic while we can.

Free! The Final Stroke - Part 2 is receiving a 4DX expansion in July. This suggests Shochiku will be targeting the ¥1 billion milestone. And with its steady business as of late, it should almost certainly get there. It's already the highest grossing film in the franchise, but the ¥1 billion mark will be the cherry on top.

Shochiku Yearly Growth is like :noway:

Toei is at bad phase because of Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes delay and yes of course the hack. ~~

It's lovely reading this. So it's likely to end as Cruise's 3rd biggest film in Japan, just ahead of the original Top Gun (¥6.7b/$42m) but behind M:I-2 (¥9.7b/$94m)) and The Last Samurai (¥13.7b/$126m). Damn, he's unequivocally still the biggest Hollywood star in Japan.
