Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Conan 25 Sunday Sales
It's very strong. :) Can't always break a record, especially when the franchise has set the bar so high and continues to remain around that level year after year. That opening is still a figure nothing besides this franchise and a few othrt films have managed in well over a decade.

This is another example of how business in rural locations has dropped off a lot in the past six months to a year though, which is concerning. Especially for family films (which continue to struggle.) Urban locations are excelling, so numbers overall are still good, but rural support is still needed for certain benchmarks.

The biggest thing is that it's above Blue Sapphire (revenue), so assuming franchise standard legs (or better with very little Golden Week competition this year), it has a good shot at matching or beating it to become the highest grossing film in the series still. ¥10 billion is certainly more iffy now though.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Conan 25 Sunday Sales
Theatre outside Usual Locations (231) aren't even added anything (332,112) much looks worrying. Well, Comscore estimate was high yesterday ($16.5M /¥2090M)

Well, let's go for ¥10B....

It's ¥1,907,461,750 not ¥1,974,670,150. (Google translate often mistranslates figures when zeros are involved.)

I'll have its ranking on the various charts posted soon.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Conan 25 Weekend Results
If I calculated correctly it's at a franchise total of something like 99.997 billion yen.

I took your rounded numbers for the other movies so maybe it did actually cross the mark this weekend depending on previous actuals. It crossed it on Monday regardless.

Yes, right on the cusp of ¥100 billion! And broke it on Monday. Just the third film franchise, after Doraemon and Wizarding World. The Fantastic Beasts are still doing well in Japan, so as long as they're being released, it'll take some time for Conan to reach the Wizarding World, but it will at some somewhat soon (I'd say 2024 earliest, 2025 at the latest). Doraemon will, of course, take some unknown amount of time (assuming they continue to release Conan films in the many coming years).

>Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween delivered the biggest opening weekend of 2022, easily, dominating the box-office by selling 966,367 admissions over the weekend frame across 498 screens, and 1,321,944 admissions over the three-day weekend. The 25th entry in franchise achieved the third biggest opening in the series in revenue / fifth biggest in admissions, as well as the third biggest opening weekend in April. The immediate goal will be ¥9 billion ($70 million+), but with little competition this upcoming Golden Week, there's a pretty good shot at it outgrossing Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire's ¥9.37 billion to become the highest grossing film in the series. No guarantee, and perhaps slightly unlikely (Sapphire received a premium format expansion later in its run, whereas Halloween is already playing on all of them), but it's certainly doable.

The continued strength of this franchise is truly astounding. It went from pretty regular earnings around ¥3/4 billion for about a decade before suddenly becoming a blockbuster franchise in 2016 (¥5 billion+), and then almost immediately began to approach the uber-blockbuster milestone (¥10 billion) just two years later.

>Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore held well, and its second weekend is the biggest for a Hollywood film since 2019. Doubling up over its opening weekend, it should go into Golden Week in two weeks pretty strong. It'd be a bit surprising if it doesn't reach the ¥5 billion ($40 million) milestone, and may go a bit higher to like ¥5.5 billion ($45 million) or so. Japan was the second film's biggest overseas market, and it'll be once again for the third film as it should become Hollywood's first blockbuster in 2.5 years.

>Sing 2 is holding on well enough to lock-up a total above ¥3 billion (~$25 million) now. Again, this is a pretty steep drop from the original (40%), but Japan has comfortably become its second best overseas market (behind the UK) despite that. So, disappointing compared to its predecessor, but compared to everywhere else (and given how Hollywood and younger-skewing films in general have struggled recently), definitely a respectable hit.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Little Star Wars 2021 isn't going to earn much more than ¥2.5 billion, putting it behind the 2020 release and both 2021 releases. I think there's just been too many examples (four now) of this franchise beginning to drop-off, likely because it skews so young in a rapidly aging and declining population, to find an excuse for the lower numbers now. Maybe it can get back to ¥3-4 billion next year or the year after, but I think the franchise peak is well behind it at this point.

>The Last 10 Years has already earned way more than expected, and if Warner Bros. keeps it just wide enough throughout Golden Week, its chances of reaching ¥3 billion (~$25 million) are still very much alive.

>Jujutsu Kaisen 0 managed to hold onto the 10th position for a second week, achieving an outstanding 17-consecutive weeks in the Top 10! It's only ¥39 million away from becoming the 15th highest-grossing film of all-time, which it should do shortly into Golden Week (probably at the very start, April 29th or that same weekend). Its admissions are up to 9,600,956.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (04/16-17); Charts Update
Japanese live-action films barely earns any revenue outside Japan. But their is always a market where our live-action/anime films earns a lot in comparison to combined Other Overseas market (America+Europe+Africa+Oceania) Ofc, do not blame me if you end up watching in festival or fan Screenings. Below there is a spoiler of which film I am talking about has achieved a rare milestone...

Spoiler: show
We Made A Beautiful Bouquet finally exceeded ¥90M in Mainland China. It's a very rare milestone in this big market as I have explained earlier that Japanese Live-action doesn't meet the expectations of Chinese Audience. As a side-note, I would like to explain that Maoyan projection originally predicted ¥20M ending when people raised issues with piracy with nominal Tuesday OD of ¥8M, but it's over WOM in Douban and Ticketing Platform Maoyan score has proved that it's worthy watching.

Indeed, we had extra-ordinary multipler for this film in Japan. I remember somewhere above 19x and so far "The Last 10 Years" has crossed 10x multiple, so you know how much appreciations We Made A Beautiful Bouquet has received from Japan and China. Indeed, China is it's 3rd Overseas market after Korea and Hong Kong to receive a Theatrical Release. It's a very rare moment in History of Japanese Films to premiere a film in Mainland China ahead of Taiwanese (Because, Taiwan (China), Korea, Hong Kong (SAR) &Macau (SAR) are either of the 1st Overseas market for Japanese Films.) It's now the 2nd Highest Grossing Japanese non-anime/live-action film in Mainland China just below Shoplifter (¥99M). I hope more live-action films get release here.

Official Poster after breaking ¥90M in Mainland China, along with their scores.

Live-Box Office Tracker "Maoyan" has tracked that the film has grossed so far ¥90.17M.

Glad it found success in China. It is indeed rare for live-action Japanese films to find financial success outside of Japan.

I'm assuming those are international numbers for JJK?

Interesting that it became the 4th biggest anime film ever in Germany behind the first three Pokémon. Was it just thanks to a wider release or something? (Hello, Mark!) Would have predicted a Miyazaki film or something else.

Good to see The Numbers have things updated properly!

Quick weekend update:

Detective Conan 25 appears to be holding a good bit better than last year's film, at least at the usual locations, and since Sunday is guaranteed to be stronger (because last year's film's second Sunday was the first day theaters in Tokyo, Osaka, etc., closed ahead of Golden Week due to COVID), it's guaranteed to have a bigger second weekend. So, I'd expect a second weekend over ¥800 million, which could challenge or approach the franchise second weekend record (held by Blue Sapphire's ¥886 million).

Fantastic Beasts 3 is still holding pretty well in second place, perhaps looking at another mid-30s drop, although I hope Sunday gets the third weekend hold closer to 30% as we approach Golden Week. It's very likely to outgross Spider-Man: No Way Home now to become Hollywood's biggest film since 2019, and if GW delivers, then it should break the blockbuster milestone (¥5 billion).

Crayon Shin-chan 30, the top debut this weekend, will see a solid start in third place. I don't have how the more recent films performed on Saturday in mind, but it looks to be at least close, if not on par with, at least a few of them. If it sees a nice Sunday bump, it will likely achieve an opening weekend comparable to many other films in the long-running franchise.

From the looks of it, I think it's performing well. I'll check its admissions at the usual locations this weekend and compare them to Part 1 a bit later today. (Unless someone beats me to it!)
