Note: The two weekends it fell outside the Top 10 have estimated weekend grosses.

And there we have it! Its run concluded on the 29th following Toei's farewell push that began days before New Year.

It went out with five consecutive weekend increases, surpassed Howl's Moving Castle to become the #8 film of all-time, and set a new 26th weekend record.

Final Weekend Stats:

-13/26 Weekends at #1
-19/26 Weekends in Top 5
-24/26 Weekends in Top 10

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Twenty Sixth Weekends
Biggest Twenty-Sixth Weekends (2000-):

¥291.8 million ($2.3 million), +37%, ¥19.70 billion ($143.7 million) - One Piece Film Red (2022)
__________
¥72.3 million ($0.6 million), -14%, ¥24.34 billion ($230.5 million) - Your Name. (2016)
¥71.9 million ($0.6 million), -70%, ¥39.62 billion ($378.8 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
¥55.0 million ($0.5 million), -30%, ¥29.15 billion ($240.2 million) - Spirited Away (2001)

Not a bad way to end your run, I'd say. :funny:

Never say never, but the 26th weekend record could stay with One Piece for.... ever. It also came super close to achieving the record for Biggest 26th Weekend in the World, I think, assuming E.T.'s 26th weekend ($2.35 million) in the U.S. is the record. A more favorable exchange rate would have gotten it there.

Suzume admission numbers are at 9.9 million and then it will hit 10 Million admissions that Jujutsu Kaiden 0 missed.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: One Piece Film Red Ends Run W/Record W
It's *probably* going to outgross both TGM and JJK0 as well to become the #2 film of 2022 now too.

What an insane Top 4 this past year. And if you add in December, an even crazier Top 5 in the last 12 months (Dec.-Dec.):

¥19.70 billion / 14.27 million - One Piece Film Red
¥13.16 billion (~¥14-14.5 billion projected final) / 9.90 million (~10.5-11 million projected final) - Suzume
¥13.80 billion / 9.84 million - Jujutsu Kaisen 0
¥13.57 billion / 8.41 million - Top Gun: Maverick
¥9.45 billion (~¥11 billion projected final) / 6.48 million (~7.5 million projected final) - The First Slam Dunk

Strongest Top 5 films in a 12 month period ever once Suzume and Slam Dunk get near/over their projected totals. And in 6th place you have Detective Conan at ¥9.78 billion. Almost 6 uber-blockbusters in 12 months.

>The Legend & Butterfly debuts atop the box-office, selling 371,072 admissions over the weekend across 382 screens. This opening is notable for a number of reasons. First, it ends Slam Dunk's reign atop the box office. Second, it helped Toei achieve the entire Top 3 films, which I've never seen the distributor manage before! And third, as KNYtracker777 mentioned, the budget here is very high (¥2 billion). So, to break even, it has to earn ¥4.5 billion... and that's very unlikely. The opening is actually pretty good, but with a budget like that, you've got to have a bigger opening than this, or hope for a very leggy run.

>The First Slam Dunk is finally dethroned in its ninth weekend, but it's still putting up pretty remarkable holds. After nine weeks, admissions are up to 6,475,170. It's guaranteed to exceed ¥10 billion, but Toei has realized it can get it quite a bit higher and has a large giveaway (500,000 copies) that begins on this week on February 1st. Therefore... I think we could see a total up to ¥11 billion now, which would be around 7.5 million admissions. Fantastic.

>One Piece Film Red ends its spectacular box-office run this weekend, and while it wasn't able to reclaim the #1 spot, it did increase for the fifth consecutive weekend AND set a New 26th Weekend Record by a whopping 304%! And not just that, it also surpassed Howl's Moving Castle on the All-Time Chart to rise to #8. And it ended its run with a staggering 14.27 million admissions.

>Suzume falls outside the Top 3 for the first time in its run so far, but with that dip came a sizable weekend increase (giveaway event) that puts it in a very strong position to become the second highest grossing film of 2022 ahead of Top Gun: Maverick and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. It's also barely shy of ¥1 billion from catching Shinkai's last film, Weathering With You, which could come back into play. And finally, its twelve week admissions reached 9,906,679, so it'll be exceeding 10 million this week.

>Avatar: The Way of Water rounded out the Top 5 in its seventh weekend of release, with admissions reaching 2,152,068. We might be seeing its run coming to a major halt this upcoming weekend since it's likely to lose all of its premium screens. So, I'm still expecting a finish around ¥4.1/4.2 million (~$32 million) and 2.25 million admissions.

>RRR is still performing amazingly well, increasing once again. Admissions are up to 481,140. I believe we can go ahead and call ¥1 billion a lock. It's already the highest grossing Indian film of All-Time in Japan, but reaching the ¥1 billion milestone to earn it a spot in the books will be very significant of its own.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (01/27-29); Charts Update
I checked it before posting everything yesterday and it wasn't up yet! Lol. But... almost all the film grosses match either the final distributor number or last tracked figure for the vast majority of films above (Top Grossing Films of 2022), so barely any changes needed there.

Let me finish charts related to this past weekend, and then I'll post the 2022 Yearly Results later this evening.

Quite note: 2022 was the second biggest year ever at the box office for Japanese films! Imported Films (namely Hollywood) struggling (better than 2020 and 2021, but 2022 was still their third worst year in 22 years...) brings the overall year down a lot, but it still managed to be the seventh biggest year ever at least.

The average ticket price also dropped for the first time since 2013. Not by much, but the boost premium formats were giving them in recent years has probably stabilized and we'll settle around what it is now for the foreseeable future with minimal ups/downs.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2022 Yearly Results!
2022 Yearly Results:

Yearly Revenue: ¥213.111 billion ($1.622 billion), +31.6%, 7th Biggest Year Recorded (1955-)
Yearly Admissions: 152,005,000, +32.4%, 5th Weakest Year Since 2000

Japanese Film Share: 68.8% - ¥146.579 billion ($1.116 billion), +14.2%, 2nd Biggest Year Recorded (1955-)
Imported Film Share: 31.2% - ¥66.532 billion ($506 million), +98.3%, 3rd Weakest Year Recorded Since 1972

# Of Japanese Films Released: 634, +29.4%, 2nd Highest On Record (1955-)
# Of Imported Films Released: 509, +8.5%, 9th Highest On Record (1955-)
# Of Overall Films Released: 1,143, +19.2%, 6th Highest On Record (1955-)
# Of Films Grossing ¥1 Billion+ (~$8 million): 41 (26 Japanese, 15 Imported), +13.9%, 4th Lowest Since 2000

Number of Theater Screens: 3,636, -0.04%, First Decline Since 1993
Average Ticket Price: ¥1,402 ($10.67), -0.6%, Second Highest Ever; First Decline Since 2013

*2022 marks the fifteenth-consecutive year (2008-) that Japanese Films have earned more than Imported Films.
*Percent changes versus 2021.

Notes!

-The USD totals are based on the avg. exchange rate of 2022 (131.454). 2022 saw some of the most extreme changes in history, becoming unfavorable back in March (when inflation began impacting the US), and then reaching 30 year lows in the Fall... It's since recovered a bit, so fingers crossed 2023 can get back a little closer to pre-2022 levels.

-The decline in the avg. ticket price, while small, catches my eye. It's the first decline since 2013. General ticket prices haven't increased since 2014, so the reason we've seen so many years since then increase is due to the popularity of 4DX/IMAX showings. So, I think the first decline in 9 years is likely attributed to premium formats reaching their peak.

-2022 was a great year, the second biggest for Japanese films ever, and a respectable seventh biggest year overall. However... It's going to be really hard to improve much further until Imported films (Hollywood) manages to bounce back, which I don't think is likely due to Japan's rapidly changing demographics and Disney's erosion.

-Imported Films (Hollywood, primarily) saw a large 98% increase over last year (their weakest year of all time), but they're still FAR below their pre-2020 levels. They're still down about 1/3 compared to their weaker years before 2020. Why? Mainly because Disney is still only doing 1/4 (or even 1/5) of their usual business in the market. Until Disney, formally the biggest Imported distributor (and 2nd overall), recovers, it's going to be about impossible to fully recover.

Surprised to see how much Fantastic Beasts still makes there. If the movies were higher quality just imagine how big they'd be.

Oh, the year end chart reminds me that, after moving from 2-day weekend to 3-day weekend, Japan should just use normal calendar for year end chart, begin on the first of January and end on the last of December.

Did One Piece Film Red had the last show on Sunday or will there be more showings from Monday-Thursday to fill out the playing week?
