¥12 billion tomorrow? Probably. As has been the case since day one, it's been the second fastest film to reach every milestone in revenue and admissions thus far in its run, and ¥12 billion (and 8.5m admissions) will be no different. Also, it'll overtake Top Gun: Maverick tomorrow, too, to become the #2 film of 2022, and is basically guaranteed to outgross Jujutsu Kaisen 0 for the #1 spot in a few weeks.

Also, since the weekly admissions estimates from 08/21-28 were just ~1,000 off from the actuals, I'm not going to bother adjusting the last set of weekdays for a more accurate figure since we're just taking a couple hundred (high/low) for each day on average.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Fourteenth Weekends
Biggest Fourteenth Weekends (2000-)
¥392.6 million ($3.8 million), -34%, ¥23.10 billion ($226.4 million) - Frozen (2014)
¥294.5 million ($2.6 million), +02%, ¥25.37 billion ($208.3 million) - Spirited Away (2001)
¥265.9 million ($2.4 million), +1,458%, ¥8.97 billion ($82.1 million), Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (2021)
¥211.4 million ($1.9 million), -17%, ¥19.49 billion ($188.6 million) - Your Name. (2016)
¥203.4 million ($2.0 million), -32%, ¥36.18 billion ($346.0 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
¥169.4 million ($1.8 million), -22%, ¥14.68 billion ($164.9 million) - Avatar (2009)
¥153.4 million ($1.1 million), -11%, ¥11.81 billion ($88.4 million) - Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
¥144.1 million ($1.3 million), -28%, ¥11.35 billion ($101.7 million) - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
¥126.0 million ($1.2 million), -33%, ¥17.89 billion ($174.1 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

It's tracking closely with Bohemian Rhapsody now on a weekly basis, and with a similar total at 14 weeks, so it may be worth using it for a possible future trajectory. BR finished with ¥13.11 billion, although this was after practically a full year in theaters before it was released on home video, and I don't know if TGM will be playing until next May. Only time will tell. Either way, ¥13 billion is probably the target.

Also, the fact that Demon Slayer, Spirited Away, and Your Name. all grossed another ¥4-5 billion (~$40/45m) after their fourteenth weekends here is pretty bonkers. (They become the only three films on these weekend charts eventually.)

Woah I'm really overblown by the performance of OP. It keeps shattering my expectations.

How far can One Piece go? 15 billion at most or can it go beyond that

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: OP Exceeds ¥11b; Second Highest 4th WK
I'm predicting it'll be right around ¥12.9/13 billion after this Sunday, following a ~50% weekend drop (it increased 48% this past weekend, so a drop of that or more is likely, as most post-giveaway weekends are).

If we give it weekly drops of 50% from there, it'll finish around ¥14.5 billion which should be the bare minimum since it's obviously going to have better holds than that most weeks, so ¥15 billion+ has become quite likely with potential for a bit more still, too.

Notably, Silver Week is interesting this year as we get back-to-back 3-day holiday weekends. Sept. 19th (Monday) is a holiday, so that'll be a 3-day holiday weekend. And Sept. 23rd (Friday) is a holiday, giving us another 3-day holiday weekend! I wouldn't be surprised if a new giveaway event is announced (maybe tomorrow during another stage greeting celebration with the director and cast) for Silver Week, so with these two 3-day holiday weekends + new giveaway, it could add quite a bit to whatever its total is at that time.

I've seen some say they plan to use a few time-off hours/vacation days on Sept. 20th-22nd, which will give them NINE CONSECUTIVE days off work with how the holidays align that week.

Silver Week 2022:

9/17 - Weekend
9/18 - Weekend
9/19 - Holiday
9/20 -
9/21 -
9/22 -
9/23 - Holiday
9/24 - Weekend
9/25 - Weekend

This will be a strong 9 days for the box office, a sort of pseudo holiday period (like New Year, Golden Week, or Obon Festival), just a a little weaker.

There are going to be those that indeed take at least one day, if not all three days, off between those holidays to get many days off.

Yeah. Super flop. DC isn't popular / unknown, and outside of Disney and Illumination (or basically Illumination only now), most imported animated films fail in Japan. So, it was a result of a double-whammy.

I'll have the Weekend Actuals up later this evening and include its numbers. (It missed the Top 10 though.)

Nope earned almost 7x more than Super-Pets but still only debuted in 9th place. That may tell you how poorly Super-Pets did (Paw Patrol's third weekend, 10th place, was even 3-4x higher). LOL.

Ugh. I want to say "well at least that's good for Nope", but not even that's true, lol. Yay PAW Patrol!

>One Piece Film Red enjoyed a huge fourth weekend increase, so much so that it achieved the second biggest fourth weekend of all-time. The film sold an additional 832,000 admissions, bringing its four-week total up to 8,200,234. It became the second fastest film to exceed both ¥11 billion and 8 million admissions. It's still earning too much to really make an accurate projection on where it's heading, but we should expect a finish above ¥15 billion and perhaps 11 million admissions for now, with potential for a run at the Top 10 All-Time.

>Jurassic World: Dominion held well, and with this hold, should have guaranteed that it'll exceed ¥6 billion and 4 million admissions. Nothing very exciting here, as it'll be down around 25% from its predecessor, but it's not a bad performance either. Just "okay".

>Top Gun: Maverick dropped for the first time in three weeks, but it's only an 11% decline and its fourteenth weekend is higher than its twelfth weekend, so, yeah, clearly nothing to be concerned about, far from it. Its admissions have risen to 7,446,516. Given how leggy its been for the past several weeks, it's still not clear where it might finish! As mentioned in an earlier post, its weekly numbers and total is similar to Bohemian Rhapsody at this stage, so it could be aiming for ¥13 billion (~$97 million) and 8.1/8.2 million admissions. When this stunning figure is "only" going to be good enough for third place, you know it's been a very strong year for the box-office.

>Kingdom II is making its path to ¥5 billion more and more difficult, but I'm assuming it's still going to get there, although it could be a little bit of a crawl. Similar to Jurassic World 3, this is "okay", and ¥5 billion is strong, but in this case, following its very impressive OW, it's sort of lackluster as it'll finish about 13% below its predecessor despite a much higher start. On the other hand... if it didn't have such an unusually large debut, finishing near-ish its predecessor would have been expected and considered good, as it happens with many live-action sequels like this.

>Minions: The Rise of Gru is still doing pretty well, but we'll need to watch what happens after this upcoming weekend since younger-skewing films usually fall hard in September. As it stands, its chances of reaching ¥4.5 billion are decent, but if it would miss, no biggie. It's still the highest grossing imported animated film in 3 years either way.

>Nope. Not much to say here, expected disappointment (although breaking 100 million over the three-day isn't *that* bad for this sort of film). If anyone is curious, it sold 70,183 admissions over its first three-days on 261 screens.

>Finally, for Algren, DC League of Super-Pets was a Super-Flop. Its exact weekend ranking isn't known, but based on admissions from the usual locations, it looks to have debuted in 15th place... Its weekend frame gross is also unknown (estimating about ¥16 million ($115,000), but over its first three-days, it earned ¥23,760,800 ($172,000) on 19,019 admissions across 268 screens. So, yeah... extreme flop, but at least WB tried because 268 screens, while not very wide, is pretty decent, meaning they gave it a chance.

REMINDER! I posted the 2022 Charts early this week, which can be found at the TOP of this page.

I don't specifically care about DC League of Super-Pets, lol. I am just interested in U.S. movies releasing in Japan.

Corpse, do you have a release schedule for September and October?

I didn't see any updates, but I'll check the usual sources again later to see if it got one. But I doubt it did.

Algren, I'll post the Sept. & Oct. release schedule either later this evening or tomorrow.

Second fastest film to reach ¥12 billion. And, it overtook Top Gun: Maverick today to become the #2 film of 2022 (#1 of the calendar year).

Thursday is the first of the month, national discount day, so expect a good result tomorrow. Since it's Thursday, though, the weakest day of the week, I don't know if it can beat Monday or Wednesday, but it should at least match them, I'd think. It has another stage greeting on Thursday to celebrate its performance, too, with the director and cast, and some event is expected to be announced, which could be important for the future box-office.

¥4.70 billion ($34.7 million) / 3.32 million [45] - Kingdom II: To Distant Lands (Toho, Sony)
¥4.57 billion ($36.1 million) / 3.13 million [E] - Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (Warner Bros.)
¥4.39 billion ($33.8 million) / 2.95 million [F] - Shin Ultraman (Toho)
¥4.17 billion ($37.1 million) / 2.77 million [E] - Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony)

Still find it funny that just because the yen number is higher doesn't mean the dollar amount is higher...

I know it is likely due to the fact that the yen was stronger earlier in the year.

Yep! It's not usually this extreme, but the Yen took a nosedive versus the Dollar back in March and in a matter of weeks, it hit a freakin' 20-year-low. And it's gotten even worse over the summer, reaching 24-year-lows (like this past week...). Jujutsu Kaisen 0 grossed $122.7m (from this past Dec.-April), but that wouldn't even be $100 million now.

I believe Japan has suffered the most versus the strength of the dollar this year.

Here is a MASSIVE extreme to show you all if you missed it:

026. ¥11.81 billion ($88.4 million) - Top Gun: Maverick (2022) *14 Weeks in Release*
027. ¥11.80 billion ($142.8 million) - Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Practically identical gross (Yen), but there is a $55m difference here because of how abysmal the exchange rate is this year.

This isn't box office related but I just love this story:

Quote:
Japanese Minister declares war on old-fashioned technology

Japan's digital minister has "declared war" on floppy disks and other retro tech used by the country's bureaucrats.

Around 1,900 government procedures still require businesses to use the storage devices, plus CDs and mini-discs, Taro Kono said. He said regulations would be updated to allow people to use online services. Despite its reputation for innovative high-tech gadgetry, Japan is notorious for clinging to outmoded technology through its office culture.

Floppy disks - so-called because the original products were bendable - were created in the late 1960s, but were falling out of fashion three decades later thanks to more efficient storage solutions. More than 20,000 typical disks would be needed to replicate an average memory stick storing 32GB of information. But the legacy of the square-shaped device can still be witnessed to this day, as their visual appearance inspired the traditional "save" icon.

A Japanese government committee has discovered about 1,900 areas in which businesses are required to use storage media like floppy disks when making applications or holding data. During a news conference on Tuesday, Mr Kono also criticised the country's lingering use of other outdated technology. "I'm looking to get rid of the fax machine, and I still plan to do that," he said.

Turning to storage devices, he asked: "Where does one even buy a floppy disk these days?"

This is not the first time Japan has hit the headlines for its analogue habits - which remain a paradox given the country's proficiency at developing exciting new products.

Various explanations have been offered, including poor digital literacy and a bureaucratic culture with conservative attitudes.

There was shock when the country's cyber-security minister admitted in 2018 that he had never used a computer, saying he had always delegated IT tasks to his staff.

And it was not until 2019 that Japan's final pager provider closed its service, with the final private subscriber explaining that it was the preferred method of communication for his elderly mother.

Yeah... Many business still use 80s/90s technology. Flip-phones are still used by many Japanese over smartphones, too. They've made the transition more the past couple years, but I have little doubt they have the highest percent of flip-phone sales and usage in the world still.

The Japanese are a very "material" people. They still like to buy physical items (like CDs, books, etc.), and have been slow to adopt streaming over turning on the TV and watching broadcast television. They're not keen on subscriptions, contracts, etc., and just prefer to buy something and own it.

Half of Japan's population is over 50, and a third is over 65, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise they've held onto old tech for so long, even to this day. But it is amusing when articles like the one above come out.

That is quite a staggering statistic.

I share their love of physical media, old tech, despite not owning physical media and having a smartphone. But then I'm big on nostalgia. It must be like a time travelling to visit Japan, in some ways.
