RRR is indeed doing great. It's been hanging out in the Top 20/25 since it opened back in October (including the first month or so in the top 10 + some random weekends along the way), and it's back in the Top 10 this weekend (week 14).

I think it's too early to say, but it could eventually hit ¥1 billion if it receives some key awards, including performing well at the Oscars.

Despite premiering in October and I think there is a rule by Eiren that if a movie hits ¥1 Billion in December or beyond before the next year it would be counted the following year. If RRR potentially hits that important mark if the reasons you have mentioned then would it be counted by Eiren in the following year which is 2023 or this is a special circumstance? I might be wrong about the Eiren rule but this would be among the unique cases.

I believe it's if a film earns ¥1 billion or more from December. So unless it grosses quite a bit more (maybe earning... ¥1.5 billion, if it was around ¥500 million back at the start of Dec.), it should remain a 2022 release. We'll likely have to wait until post-Oscars to see what sort of bump it gets then, because it will likely need an Oscar win to gross significantly more than ¥1 billion.

>The First Slam Dunk continues to put up amazing holds these last couple weeks and achieves an 8th consecutive weekend atop the box-office, and... I'm now expecting it should exceed ¥10 billion! It's, in fact, just about guaranteed thanks to the numbers its put up lately. Admissions exceeded 6 million with 6,109,122 after eight weeks in release as well, and just might be able to reach 7 million.

>Suzume is STILL in the top 3 after 11 weeks, having never fallen out of it yet in its run. It also delivered a very good hold this weekend, too, which keeps its chances alive of possibly outgrossing Top Gun: Maverick and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 to become the #2 highest-grossing film of 2022. A gross over ¥13.5 billion I believe is likely, but let's wait to see what future holds look like before predicting more.

>One Piece Film Red... wow. It rose back inside the Top 10 last weekend after falling out for a couple, and now it's all the way back to #3 after a monster 335% increase in its 25th weekend of release, achieving the second biggest 25th weekend of all-time. Toei is really, really pushing the film in its final weeks of release (last day being January 29th), so I wouldn't be surprised if it goes even higher in its final weekend. It's likely to outgross Howl's Moving Castle to become the #8 highest-grossing film of all-time now, but can it powerthrough and hit ¥20 billion come January 29th? Let's wait and see. Admissions also reached a stagger 14 million, making it the 11th most-attended film of all-time after 25 weeks in release.

>Avatar: The Way of Water slips to 5th place in its 6th weekend of release. Expect a finish a little above ¥4 billion (~$31 million) and 2.2/2.3 million admissions (currently at 2,047,062).

>RRR has been mentioned in the thread several times in recent weeks as its impressive run continues, and it managed to rise back inside the top 10 this weekend, its 14th week of release (admissions up to 417,006). No recent weekend data is available, but the increase this weekend looks to be quite high (maybe as much as 100% or more) based on the #10 film from last weekend. If it keeps doing week during the award season and can pick of an Oscar, I think we can expect it to hit ¥1 billion.

Here you go, pookpooi!!! Took a little while, but all updated.

If there are any films NOT on the list, let me know. List includes both pure Musicals and Musical Films. The list is heavily Western (Hollywood), but I know there are many missing anime films similar to Love! Live! (already on the list) that would be here. Just remind me of them and I'll go back and add them at a later date.

One thing that may complicate it and make the list grow a ton will be if all the Pretty Cure/Precure films count as Musical films. Anyone know?

Oh thank you, I thought you're gonna wait until One Piece Red has its final number.
I haven't check the list carefully, but I already spot that it doesn't have a live-action Disney's Jungle Book? (Yes, it really is a musical film)

Basically the changes that have happened to the Japanese Box Office over the past 30 years are these below:

1. Going from Distribution Income to Revenue Income in 2000.

2. Having Previews included in OW to excluding them somewhere late 2000s.

3. Switching from Two-Day OW to Three-Day OW this year.

They are the three things that I think of, but were there other changes that have happened or that is it Corpse?

Nothing as big as the 3. For point 2, that happened in 2010. So, there's been one major change at the box-office once per decade over the last 3 decades.

One other notable change was when, for the first time in 20 years, general ticket prices increased by ¥100 in 2014. It's been the only ticket price increase since the early 1990s (I think I read 1993, but don't quote me) even to this day.

With the rise of new Covid cases recently, will it affect theaters in the coming weeks?

Nah. Cases were over 200,000 a day back in December, more than double now, and no restrictions were put in place anywhere. And the box office hasn't seen any impact.

The government is suppose to rule on downgrading the severity of it to the lowest grade (same level as the flu) in the near future too, which will cause less strain in pretty much every field (medical, education, business, etc.).

So back to this. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I thought RRR was a favorite for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, yet it wasn't even nominated yesterday?

Let's see of interest dies down at the box office over the next week or two now, or if it's staying power has little/nothing to do with award season.

Speaking of Oscars actually several movies like Top Gun Maverick and Avatar 2 for example were nominated for best picture. I known there were several more that were nominated but just want to focus on these two. For Top Gun Maverick if it wins will a bigger expansion finally get it to surpass The Last Samurai as Tom Cruise highest grossing film in Japan, and for Avatar 2 despite the fact it will lose all premium screens to Demon Slayer on Feb 3, is it possible if it wins to go back on premium screens and make more money or will it most likely be finished?

For Demon Slayer since Mugen Train is the highest grossing film of all time in gross and admission, is there a possibility that this could gross at least ¥10 Billion or not and either way it will def decline not matter what from Mugen Train since sequels/follow-ups to ¥15 Billion or more grossers with one exception decline.
