Keep reposting the old 2-days week-end chart when you post the new 3-days one, like you do for best opening week-end. That way we can still compare if we want.

In the short term, it might seem useful to have them both in the same chart with an asterisk, but in the long term, it wouldn't really make sense. Years from now, we'll just see it as two different eras of JP box-office analysis.

I'd say I'd go back and look for comparisons, but, as has been the case a LOT in recent years, there are none. It's way too big to compare to any GW openers, and comparing it to any holdovers won't work.

We know it's not skewing very young because its opening weekend avg. ticket price was in that more broad-appealing range of ¥1400-1450. Not to mention its evening shows have been too strong to indicate any young-skew. This could be partially a result of its first ten days being a holiday period, but I think we've had seen some sign of evening slowdown (such as yesterday, Sunday) if it had a young-skew.

So... it should be fine over the post-GW weekdays based on what data we have. EDIT: I wrote a lot of stuff after this, but considering this past weekend was boosted (more seating / holiday impact), I'll say that ¥250 million is probably a good goal.

Well... there is such a chart, but it's sort of outdated now since Japan has moved to 3-day weekends. It's going to take a very short time for the biggest aggregated weekends (formally 2-days) to only feature weekends from 2023-onward.

Detective Conan's opening weekend alone from three weeks ago would be enough to land on it (almost in the top 10) given the switch from 2 to 3 day. And yes, this past weekend (05/05-07) is by far the biggest aggregated weekend in history. Mario and Conan alone almost take #1.

Here is the chart WITHOUT any 2023 weekends on it. Do you guys want me to add 2023-onward weekends with an asterisk?

Biggest All-Time Aggregated Weekends (Top 10 Films; 1998-2022):

01. ¥3.908 billion - 10/17-18/2020 (#1 Film - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train)
02. ¥3.601 billion - 07/09-10/2005 (#1 Film - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith)
03. ¥3.561 billion - 10/24-25/2020 (#1 Film - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train)
04. ¥3.525 billion - 08/06-07/2022 (#1 Film - One Piece Film Red)
05. ¥3.485 billion - 08/04-05/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
06. ¥3.427 billion - 05/03-04/2014 (#1 Film - Frozen)
07. ¥3.423 billion - 07/19-20/2003 (#1 Film - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!)
08. ¥3.379 billion - 08/08-09/2015 (#1 Film - Jurassic World)
09. ¥3.377 billion - 08/10-11/2019 (#1 Film - One Piece: Stampede)
10. ¥3.329 billion - 07/21-22/2007 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
11. ¥3.314 billion - 07/22-23/2006 (#1 Film - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest)
12. ¥3.297 billion - 08/15-16/2015 (#1 Film - Jurassic World)
13. ¥3.212 billion - 07/28-29/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
14. ¥3.160 billion - 04/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Alice in Wonderland)
15. ¥3.150 billion - 04/29-30/2017 (#1 Film - Beauty and the Beast)
16. ¥3.133 billion - 08/16-17/2003 (#1 Film - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!)
17. ¥3.127 billion - 10/31-11/01/2020 (#1 Film - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train)
18. ¥3.106 billion - 12/19-20/2015 (#1 Film - Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
19. ¥3.100 billion - 07/13-14/2019 (#1 Film - Toy Story 4)
20. ¥3.048 billion - 07/21-22/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
21. ¥3.046 billion - 12/20-21/2014 (#1 Film - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!)
22. ¥3.026 billion - 08/04-05/2018 (#1 Film - Code Blue)

Thanks!

And yes, with the move to 3 day weekends it's not going to be directly comparable. It's too bad we don't have single day box office in Japan otherwise you could have retroactively added the Friday grosses to those weekends. But like Rouk said, a separate post 2023 list should be fine (for now).

Looks like it's making maybe half that or less. Maybe 3D plfs are really bumping the ATP up by a lot. 3D dolby was sold out pretty much every day. But looks like weekdays will not be this film's strong suit I guess. I don't see this having a doraemon-level ridiculous saturday and sunday jump but hopefully still a great one to make up for it.

What a GW it was and later this week or so beside posting the weekend actuals, highest grossing/admissions etc, do you also plan to post an update to highest grossing animated films in Japan over ¥3 Billion?

Yeah, the low weekdays are going to make it much harder to get up to that ¥15 billion (or higher) range. Maybe it's appealing younger than its first 10 days indicated since all of that was a holiday period/weekends. And there are no holidays between now and the third week of July when Summer Vacation begins to help it out over the next 2.5 months. It'll need to rely solely on its own ability to bring audiences in, OR giveaway events if it has any.

Estimating around ¥120 million ($877,000) today. That'll probably get it around ¥550 million (~$4 million) for the Mon.-Fri. frame combined.

Opening at the start of Golden Week and having its first 10 days in release boosted certainly did its work by giving it the second highest two-week total ever, though. But I imagine we'll see it drop pretty steadily from here on unless this is just the initial post-GW decline and it stabilizes quickly.

Conan ¥10 billion announcement. Top grossing, and most attended, film in the franchise now.

It's also been reported that Golden Week 2023 was the biggest on record (since 2000) at the box office, surpassing 2019's previous record by 19.1% in revenue and 12.6% in admissions over the seven day holiday period (April 29th-May 5th).

Toho is doing a hat giveaway event on thursday (only some of their locations and at some specific times from what I understood). That's not going to be super high impact but I think leaves hope that they'll have some bigger ones planned for later.

I'll be surprised if Toho (Toho-Towa) doesn't schedule at least a few giveaways during its run. They've become pretty common at the box office now, with even films like Top Gun: Maverick are getting them.

This is another advantage Paramount and Universal films have over Disney and Warner Bros releases too. Since Paramount and Universal sold their distribution rights, Toho can is better able to handle them and extend their box office runs with giveaway and other events. Warner Bros. will do giveaways for their local films sometimes, but I haven't seen any for their Hollywood (imported) releases. And I don't think Disney does them at all.

I got way behind on the Top Opening Weekends of 2023 Chart, so give me a day or two to get that one all updated.

In the meantime, all the films have been updated as of Sunday now, so gonna go ahead and post it.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Golden Week 2023 - New Record
5 of the Top 10 films this weekend ranked on the Biggest Weekend Charts of their respective weekends (2nd, 2nd again, 4th, 23rd, and 29th). And outside the top 10, Suzume ranks on the 26th weekend chart.

This is a pretty insane stat that I know has never happened and has probably never even been close to happening in the past.

I'll update all of them a bit later.
