Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Health Update
Sadly the Whale is not in top ten in its opening weekend, which is no surprise considering a very limited release, but still a disappointment.

The First Slam Dunk still strong, I remember someone ask if it'll surpass JJK0, I think it's locked now. Especially the Golden Week ahead.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Health Update
Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone. I've made a lot of improvement over the past week. Some symptoms come and go (sore throat, congestion, some minor breathing issues) even after 3 weeks, but for the most part, it's no longer keeping me down at least. Although the general feeling of fatigue is still strong, with pretty basic things (like making a bed) requiring an annoying amount of energy to do.

But... I should be able to focus some attention back here soon.

And this isn't a bad weekend to try and begin that! The new (26th) Detective Conan film, Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, is on track to deliver a real monster opening. After the huge Friday, and the truly monstrous Saturday, a lot of records and/or high rankings are in order:

-Biggest April OW (This is 100% locked since Friday is counted now, but even Sat/Sun might be enough).
-Biggest Detective Conan OW (Again, 100% lock with Friday being counted, but Sat/Sun may be enough).
-Second or Third Biggest OW of All-Time.

The Third Biggest OW of All-Time looks almost certain to me, but it could even earn the Second Biggest OW of All-Time if Sunday holds well.

Welcome back Corpse!
Will Detective Conan become the highest grossing franchise of all time in Japan after movie 26?
I remember it was close to Pokemon's overall box office gross (albeit with more films). Can you verify this? Thanks!

Yes, thanks for mentioning this. No official number yet, but it almost certainly earned over ¥1 billion on Saturday alone, indeed making it only the third film in history to earn over ¥1 billion in a single-day. All three happening in the past 3.5 years.

This is a chart that needs some overdue updating. It's well past Pokemon now though. The 24th film put it above Pokemon as the third biggest film franchise only behind the Doraemon and the Wizarding World.

This film will put it above the Wizarding World though, taking it up to #2 all-time. It'll eventually surpass Doraemon for the #1 spot, probably in the next 5 years.

It should be able to get above ¥10 billion with this opening with relative ease. It's a pretty big jump over the past openings of the last few films.

If it behaves like past films in the franchise, and this franchise is very consistent with its legs/multipliers, it'd earn around ¥13.5-14 billion... That looks like far too big a jump, but we've had so many films buck the norm over the past few years, I won't be surprised this time.

As Kanroji said above, post-Covid Japan box-office has been able to produce some insane results. Or even during Covid, really, since it began in Oct. 2020 with Demon Slayer and hasn't let up yet with more than one crazy opening and/or run each year since:

Oct. 2020 - Demon Slayer (OD, OW, Total, everything in between)
Mar. 2021 - Eva 3.0+1.0 (OD, Total)
Apr. 2021 - Detective Conan 24 (OW)
Dec. 2021 - Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (OD, OW, Total)
May 2022 - Top Gun: Maverick (Total)
Aug. 2022 - One Piece Film Red (OD, OW, Total)
Dec. 2022 - The First Slam Dunk (OD, OW, Total)
Apr. 2023 - Detective Conan 26 (OD, OW, Total (tbd))

All achieved record openings of some kind and/or totals, or otherwise super notable numbers (like a top 3 or 5 number), and this doesn't include Suzume in Nov. 2022 (which, while performing amazingly well, was the most "expected"). Detective Conan 25 in Apr. 2022 didn't beat any records in its opening, so I left it off here, but it did wind up becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise, so it's worth mentioning too.

And while Top Gun: Maverick didn't put up any all-time or high-ranking number on any single chart (aside from some high rankings on later weekend charts), it's def worth adding because its run for a Hollywood film since 2019 is far and away the craziest and best for Hollywood. It's grossed almost 3x more than any Hollywood film since 2019.
