What's your analysis of The Bad Guys' opening ... is that good? or bad? any comparisons?

A bit surprising to me. Obvious it's not very much, and bad/disappointing, sure, but it could have been worse. The second weekend hold was a little eh, and this time of year is the worst for animated/family films (only 2 single holidays between now and New Year), so the total will ultimately be disappointing (~¥300 million ($2.0 million)).

¥300 million about to be less than $2 million ($2.02m today) due to the worsening exchange rate is really nuts, by the way... I've (we've) been watching as the JPY has reached 10, 20, and now over 30+ year lows vs the USD over the past 7 months or so, but seeing the currency down nearly 25%(!) now in value this year is insane. Need that US recession like yesterday, honestly.

I'll post the November release schedule (and rest of October) tomorrow or Thursday. Going to get the weekend actuals and associated charts posted throughout today first. And thanks, Kanroji! Been a little while.

>One Piece Film Red achieves an incredible 11th consecutive weekend atop the box-office, and while this weekend barely pulled off an increase due to the giveaway, it at least shows there's a bit more to get out of returning fans. It's just under ¥200 million away from entering the All-Time Top 10, which it should do come next Saturday or Sunday (Oct. 22nd/23rd). Admissions are up to a whopping 12,319,559 after eleven weeks.

>Body Search saw a decent debut in second place, selling 131,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 351 screens, and 165,976 admissions over its first three-days. Nothing great, of course, but not bad for an October release. A ¥1 billion total is possible with this debut, too.

>Silent Parade had a very unfortunate fifth weekend decline. Pretty shocking even. This rules out the chance it still had at ¥3 billion, unfortunately, so it'll likely settle with around that ¥2.8/2.9 billion level. Still respectable for sure, but it's also concerning that local live-action films are struggling to reach ¥3 billion these days. They've been on the decline for years (over a decade, really), but to see that decline still seemingly ongoing is unfortunate.

>Whisper of the Heart disappointed, only selling 79,000 admission over the weekend on 352 screens, and 108,155 over its first three days in release.

>Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Starish Tours is having the definition of a roller coaster run with either big drops or big increases basically every week. I know it's the effect of giveaways and such, it's just hard to project/track this one. ¥1 billion looked like the target a few weeks back, but they blew past that, and now ¥1.5 billion appears to be the goal but I suspect it'll also cross that without any issues. I know it's grossed more than anyone was expecting though, so if anyone is in the know as to why this Uta no Price Sama release is clearly bringing out the fans, let me know!

>Top Gun: Maverick did it! It managed to hold onto the Top 10 for a 21st consecutive weekend! I wouldn't expect a 22nd weekend, but it's also not impossible since it'll, presumably, hold better than the two films above it next week and might be able to hold that 10th place spot again. Admissions after 21 weeks are up to 8,207,525.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/15-16); Charts Update
Here is the remaining October release schedule (excluding very limited releases):

10/21:
[255] - The Line that Defines Me (Toho)
[208] - RRR (Twin)
[160] - Break of Dawn (Gaga, Avex Pictures)

10/22:
[200] - Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of a Dark Night (Aniplex)

10/28:
[346] - Sadako DX (Kadokawa)
[340] - Three Sisters of Tenmasou (Toei)
[128] - A Turtle's Shell is a Human's Ribs (Asmik Ace, Aeon Entertainment)
[x70] - Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These Conspiracy - Chapter 2 (Shochiku) *3-Weeks-Only*
[N/A] - Amsterdam (Disney)

Amsterdam doesn't have a theater count (advance sales aren't available), so not sure what's happening there. Is it releasing on Disney+ in the near future (~<30 days), maybe? They may have changed how they're handling it theatrically or something.

I had 208 above, but if you manually counted yourself just now, it's likely 211 (a couple to a handful can be added closer to release).

Quite a good count for an Indian import.

I just searched 10/21 there were 209 of them + 2 which open later, but yeah 200-210.

Really good count for an Indian film. Director's Baahubali 2 had a leggy run at low levels doing around 365M. I am expecting 500M+ for this one.

Seems reasonable given the count. Do you recall if Baahubali 2 debuted or made it inside the Top 10 at any point? Because if it didn't, RRR has a fair chance at cracking it this weekend.

Next TWO giveaways. The first begins on Oct. 29th (Shanks figure) and is limited to just 200,000 copies. And the second begins on Nov. 12th but hasn't been revealed yet.

Last week's weekdays (Tues.-Fri.) have been adjusted down. It does appear that last Tuesday had some error (definitely too high), so I took half of what was needed to adjust the week from it alone.

Suzume is obviously the film to watch in the usually barren month of November, as it has ¥10 billion+ potential just from being the next film from Makoto Shinkai. I won't go on and on about how I dislike this release date for such a high-profile release, but it should be very big regardless if it would dip from Weathering With You.

Also, pretty sure the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime movie is the widest Bandai Namco release ever. Not 100% certain, but looks likely. They may have broke 300 with a co-distributor in the past, but I can't think of any solo distributed films getting this treatment.

Slime is quite a bit bigger than SAO nowadays, so I imagine there's some potential for 2b atleast there especially since it opens wider than aniplex releases.

Seems reasonable given the count. Do you recall if Baahubali 2 debuted or made it inside the Top 10 at any point? Because if it didn't, RRR has a fair chance at cracking it this weekend.

No Baahubali 2 didn't made to top 10. It had a low sustained run and various re-releases to reach 350M+.

Saaho made debuted in top 10 on FRI but for weekend was outside top 10 in 2020.

I feel optimistic about it. ¥2 billion is a good goal. Could be the second biggest film of November, too, depending on what Motherhood does (could be leggy).

AEON is lost nowadays, think the chains remaining are Toho, Movix, United, 109 and Kinezo.

Yeah, Aeon hasn't been counted since July, unfortunately. We've been having to make estimates from ~45% of all locations versus the ~65-70% when Aeon was being included.

Also... that Friday seating you shared doesn't include Toho. The programmer said they changed their formatting yesterday, so the system didn't calculate them correctly (looks entirely omitted from the Friday seating numbers). Good news is that it should be corrected ahead of the weekend, and Saturday's seating should include them again.

I don't know what the 4.6 (or others in that column) number represents, but the 0 is where the overall number of theaters nationwide will be added over the weekend. For example, the count above is from 102 theaters of 375 overall for One Piece Film Red. Friday openers get a 0 in this column by default until the weekend.
