It is interesting that the hashtag "ボロボロに泣いた映画を4つ挙げる" (it generally means List 4 movies that made me cry) is trending today in Japan. Among classic Hollywood movies such as Titanic, UP, Toy Story and Japanese family movies, the most mentioned Japanese animated movie is Mugen Train. Tomb of the fireflies, One Piece Red and Violet Evergarden are following, too.

I'm glad you brought this up. I recently read that One Piece Film Red is apparently sad, emotional. I'm not looking into why, to avoid spoilers, but if a death or some other tragic event occurs in the film, it's certainly a big reason why this film has managed to breakout so much.

Many of the most successful films in Japan are tearjerkers, with notable sad/tragic scenes or storylines. I think it serves as a distraction for many of sorts from the real world and their own problems, a level of escapism that an action or adventure film or something can't really provide in the same way.

So, if One Piece Film Red does have a notable tragic scene/story as well, it really helps explain, in part, on why it's so big.

Monday is an actual.

Also, the JPY has reached another new low 144(!) vs the USD, and if it gets much worse (no reason to believe it won't, as inflation and interest rate hikes continue in the U.S.), it's going to go back to 1991 levels (off the top of my head, I think it needs to reach 147/148). The Yen has lost 20% of its value in just 6 months. So, expect USD figures to get worse and worse.

Yeah, so the tearjerker / emotional aspect combined with the popular music (just read Ado's songs in the movie broke a record on the Oricon streaming charts this past week), not to mention appealing heavily to the core fanbase by including Shanks, it was a perfect storm on all fronts. This is the perfect recipe to achieve success in Japan.

Looks like it'll hit 10 million admissions as early as Sunday (Day 37) if it manages a very strong weekend hold, or up through Tuesday (Day 39). It'll become the 21st film to sell 10 million admissions. I'll have where this places it on that chart here soon.

As of Friday, it rose two more spots in the Top 100, overtaking Bohemian Rhapsody and Frozen II, to 19th place. Over the weekend, it'll surpass four more films (E.T., Armageddon, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Last Samurai) to crack the Top 15 All-Time.

And, as long as it manages to drop less than 39% this weekend (seems almost certain as Fri. was only down 21% vs last week), it'll surpass Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as well to become the #1 film of 2022 and reach #14 on the All-Time Chart.

Solid sixth weekend, down ~29/30% versus last weekend. And with this, it overtakes Jujutsu Kaisen 0 to become the new #1 film of 2022! Depending on the actual admissions, 10 million will be exceeded on Monday or Tuesday, Day 38 or 39 (fourth fastest).

And the big moment, the ¥15 billion milestone, is up next week. The next giveaway event begins on 09/17, the start of Silver Week, and next Monday (09/19) is a national holiday. So, a big three-day holiday weekend coming up, which will provide a substantial increase over the sixth weekend, that could propel it to the milestone come next Monday. And it'll have most of the week left to rake in a lot of extra money, including another three-day holiday weekend (09/23-25).

I'm a huge fan of both One Piece and Ado so I'm really happy to see Film Red do so well. 18 billion for #9 all time highest grossing movie is the goal right?. I wonder if it's possible for a local live-action movie to top Bayside Shakedown 2 because once it got bumped out of the top 10 all-time highest grossing (most likely when the second KnY movie comes out), there won't be any Japanese live-action movie in the top 10.

If it's at/above ¥15.5-16b after September 25th, its eighth weekend and the end of Silver Week, I imagine it can get to ¥17.36b to reach the #9 All-Time spot.

Once Bayside Shakedown 2 gets bumped out of the Top 10, whenever that happens, it's going to ve nigh impossible for a local live-action film to ever make it inside the Top 10 again, IMO. It's become almost impossible for them to reach the Top 100. Live-action films have been on the decline for the past decade, and nothing has come even close to matching Bayside Shakedown 2 in 20 years. It was the last local live-action film to reach ¥10b.

Also, when One Piece knocks Harry Potter 2 out of the Top 10, Bayside Shakedown 2 will be the only sequel in the All-Time Top 10. I suppose you could argue Film Red is a sequel but it's not really.

Thanks, Kanroji! Super close to the estimates (barely have to change anything on the daily tracker), which is great news since we should be able to get closer and closer as time goes by.

The actual admissions (as of Sunday) remain estimated at 9.94 million, meaning they'll be between 9,935,000-9,944,000 when the actual comes out later today. So, I think it just barely missed 10 million admissions on Monday. Still, if it fell just shy, it'll exceed the mark on Tuesday, its 39th day in release to become the fourth fastest film to reach the milestone.

Doing some math, and giving it around a 50% increase next weekend due to the giveaway, I have it hitting ¥15 billion next Monday, a national holiday, its 45th day in release. It *could* do it on Sunday, day 44, but Monday looks like the safer prediction.
