Thinking 650M weekend or so. Nice hold overall. Would only be 21% lower than 2 weekends ago if that holds.

Eiga has it in 4th place in its 36th weekend.

They also have: 7th in 37th, 7th in 38th, 7th in 39th, and finally, up to 5th in 40th weekend. I believe the home video release was right after the 40th weekend, which is why it had a late surge in the Top 10 again before abruptly falling out and ending its run shortly thereafter since home video releases usually kill BO performances rather quickly.

Yeah, that looks like the target this weekend (a few of the morning showings weren't counted), which would indeed be very good, not far off its third weekend.

So, the Friday estimate... the blogger said a few showings weren't counted after 8pm, but between that time (and 11am on Saturday), he estimates that he couldn't get 5% or less. Would it make sense to take the Friday update (36,274) and multiplying it by like 3/4% to get a slightly more accurate figure to use for the Friday estimate?

Down a lot versus last Saturday, of course (giveaway), but definitely a strong hold when compared to the third Saturday. The potential for a 9-day holiday over Silver Week this year (with its two back-to-back holiday weekends) has locked up ¥15 billion+, I believe, so when that time comes, we'll be discussing if it had Top 10 All-Time potential.

Also just saw the JPY dropped to a new low 24-year-low, 142.81, versus the USD. It really looks like we'll be going back to 1991, 30/31-year-low, with the exchange rate at this rate. ¥14 billion not even being enough for $100 million for a film released right now is bonkers. This doesn't impact Japanese films, but Hollywood and their upcoming films (like Avatar 2) are REALLY going to be feeling the impact of it.

Corpse, is SA hitting 13b on its 5th weekend correct? I assume OPR can only tie it at best if so, and even that may need a bit of help from actuals (or a great sunday) since it would need to hit it on monday.

Yes, it is. Its fifth week/weekend was over Obon Festival, and it clearly did huge dailies based on its fifth week total.

One Piece will fall behind Spirited Away very soon (Sunday/Monday), as you mentioned there, and then Harry Potter 1 next week (New Year bump), and eventually Frozen and Your Name.

It will continue to maintain a large lead over others films in the Top 10 (Harry Potter 2, Bayside Shakedown 2), so I think there's a fair chance it will remain above them and crack the All-Time Top 10. If it breaks ¥15 billion over Silver Week (09/17-25), it'll probably be practically guaranteed.

~¥12.9b (09/04)
~¥13.0b (09/05)
~¥13.3b (09/09)
~¥13.7b (09/11)
~¥14.0b (09/16)
~¥14.7b (09/18) *giveaway*
~¥14.9b (09/19) *holiday*
~¥15.1b (09/22)
~¥15.3b (09/23) *holiday*
~¥15.7b (09/25)

That's what I'm currently expecting the next three weeks to go. If it's ~¥15.5b+ come 09/25, I think it can do another ~¥1.8b to outgross Harry Potter 2 to crack the Top 10, and then Bayside Shakedown 2 for #9.

I think as long as #10 is in sight Toei will push it there with giveaways if it needs them, so I'd say that's very likely to happen.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest to 15 Billion
I pretty much agree.

And here is the list of fastest (and all) films to reach the elusive ¥15 billion milestone, and when I'm expecting One Piece to reach it (lower end of the range if the 09/17 giveaway gives it a major boost that weekend).

Fastest (All) Films to ¥15 billion:
17 Days - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
38 Days - Spirited Away (2001)
38 Days - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
~44-48 Days - One Piece Film Red (2022) *Early Projection*
50 Days - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
51 Days - Your Name. (2016)
53 Days - Frozen (2014)
58 Days - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
60 Days - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
76 Days - Princess Mononoke (1997)
94 Days - Ponyo (2008)
103 Days - Avatar (2009)
152 Days - Titanic (1997)

Presuming it gets there, which is all but certain, it'll become just the thirteenth film in history to reach the milestone.

Sunday is looking quite strong. If it finished just down ~30% vs last Sunday (inflated from the giveaway), it'll drop under 45% for the weekend. That's pretty impressive following last weekend's 48% increase, and would be less than a 20% drop from its third weekend.

Very nice Sunday. ~30% off last Sunday (which was inflated), which should bring the weekend decline below 45%. 45% is usually really high, but since last weekend was up 48%, declining less than that increase (and coming in 15-20% off the third weekend as a result) is impressive.

It will tie Spirited Away as the second fastest film to ¥13 billion tomorrow at 31 days.

One Piece Film Red is breaking records weeks after weeks fort a japanese anime movie in France. Almost 1 million entries for 7m dollars in revenues. Nothing to compare with the Japan Box Office scores but still pretty good after running for 3 weeks.

And thanks Corpse for your hard work ! Your regularity and passion are really impressive.

Seems like anime films are performing better and better in many markets in more recent years! I know France is a big anime/manga market, I believe it's even second in terms of sales for One Piece specifically, so there is some basis for Film Red to be doing so well there (not saying it takes away from how well it's doing though!).

Weekend numbers and updated totals for our two biggies (OP's weekend is rounded, so it's between ¥696.5-697.4m):

¥697.0 million ($4.98m) / 498,000 > ¥12.953 billion ($95.9m) / 9.298 million - One Piece Film Red *5 Weeks in Release*
¥121.3 million ($0.87m) / 67,960 > ¥12.097 billion ($90.5m) / 7.619 million - Top Gun: Maverick *15 Weeks in Release*

I think this is may be the first time we've had two ¥12b films in the Top 5 at the same time.

**********
Last week's dailies (08/29-09/04) adjusted slightly upward to account for the higher actual total as of 09/04.

Ties Spirited Away as the second fastest film to reach ¥13 billion. So, up until this point, it was the sole second fastest film to hit every milestone from ¥1-12 billion.

Also, since we're out of summer now, the weekdays are going to be relatively low since One Piece does have some family/student (kid/teens) appeal, groups that don't go to theaters during work/school days. However, with that will come better weekends, and the impact of holidays (09/19 and 09/23 this month, with Silver Week being 09/17-25) is a lot more significant.

>One Piece Film Red reigns atop the box-office for a fifth weekend, continuing to go unchallenged. Selling a further 498,000 admissions, and dropping a very respectable 42% after increasing 48% last weekend, its admissions are way up to 9,298,313 admissions after five weeks in release. Its pace will slow for a couple weeks now that we're out of summer, but expect another boost to come over Silver Week (09/17-25), especially since it has another giveaway event that begins on the first day of the holiday period.

Expect at total well north of ¥15 billion and 11 million admissions now, and depending on where it stands post-Silver Week, it should be able to make a run at the Top 10 All-Time where ¥17.31 billion / ~12.5 million admissions (which would be enough for the Top 15 Admissions chart itself) is required.

>Bullet Train had a decent debut, or rather, a decent four-day opening. The Brad Pitt vehicle sold a respectable 283,633 admissions over its first four days in release on 798 screens (pretty dang wide). This debut should be enough to get it above the ¥1 billion ($7 million) milestone, but if it can develop some above-average legs and get enough of a boon from Silver Week, then perhaps it can aim a little higher, perhaps closer to ¥1.5 billion ($10 million).

>Jurassic World: Dominion is still doing just enough to keep its chances of exceeding ¥6 billion (~$45 million) healthy. After six weeks in release, it has sold 3,879,705 admissions, and will likely break 4 million next week. Again, not a bad performance, just a little lackluster (I think its admissions will end up behind Jurassic Park 3, for example).

>Top Gun: Maverick drops over 20% for only the second time during its entire run, if I recall correctly. Certainly no more than its third time (if any interest, I can double-check). So, that tells you how leggy its incredible performance has been after fifteen weeks! Admissions after fifteen weeks have reached 7,619,659. Expect a finish around ¥13 billion ($96/97 million).

>Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Starish Tours reportedly opened 63% above its predecessor from back in 2019, selling 86,500 admissions over its first three days in release across 128 screens.

>Minions 2 and Kingdom 2 are both winding down. I don't think the former has enough legs to reach ¥4.5 billion, but as mentioned in prior weeks, it's already the highest grossing imported animated film since 2019 and will soon have earned over ¥1 billion more than any of them. So, quite the showing for the Minions. And Kingdom 2 will eventually exceed ¥5 billion, achieving blockbuster status in the coming weeks. That's down from its predecessor, but hard to be disappointed in ¥5 billion (similar situation as Jurassic World 3, sort of).
