Post Re: Japan Box-Office: One Piece Film Red - WKND Actual!
Yeah, not sure about WOM. I'd be weary of online reviews just because review bombing can be a thing. 3/5 isn't exactly bad though. Not good, but I just checked Film Z (often considered the best OP movie) and it has a 3.4 on Yahoo!.

We'll see how the weekdays and future weekends hold (Monday is currently looking huge, so no sign of negative WOM impact yet if it exists). That'll be the best way to determine reception. But either way, even having the worst legs in the franchise gets it to ¥10 billion.

Next several posts will be all the chart updates with the actual, by the way (then I'm going to bed.)

RED was just ¥1.1B away from DS OP with just running on ⅓ of DS screen. It's just my belief that OP would have killed DS OP if it has atleast got ½ of DS Screen. If Forum is asked to believe in sometime that is possible then it's the OD record. That would have been killed!

Huh? First of all it had 910k seats, which is over 70% of what DS had on saturday, and second, even while having way more seats DS' attendance was higher at 77% for the weekend! There is no scenario where OP is coming close to DS' weekend, at most a few more screens on saturday could've allowed it to beat DS' opening day but that is all.

Hell, you could make the argument that the only thing limiting DS' first weekend was...not having even more screens, seeing as it still had absurd attendance on it and dropped single digit on the following one. Let's not start foolish comparisons please.

I am talking about OD. It just my theory on OP. That's why I told, if forum want to believe that could be possible is the OD records, if it has atleast got more shows in TOHO chain and if screen numbers were closed to 600, then OD record would have fallen.

OD record could have fallen, but DS's OD being a Friday makes it much more impressive anyway. There is no world where OP's Saturday comes close to DS's Saturday.

We'll have these discussions every time a film achieves a massive opening. Demon Slayer's OD is vulnerable since it was a Friday (One Piece just showed that, but it likely requires a Sat. OD to do it), while its weekend is untouchable. Everything being second to DS for..., well, an extremely long time (I'll refrain from forever), doesn't devalue how impressive they are, too (e.g. One Piece being just rhe second film to open over ¥2b with no previews and beating The Matrix Reloaded's previous 17 year OW record in both revenue and admissions. That's enormous.) Doesn't really matter if DS is higher because it can't really be reached anyway.

Also, what a Monday for One Piece! Using a similar ratio as the weekend, it may have achieved 415,000 admissions or so, for a gross between ¥575-600 millon. Monday is Aeon Cinema Day, so those admissions could be slightly higher, too.

It's the... fourth biggest Monday, I think (I'll check), or the second biggest non-holiday / opening day Monday.

Based on my Biggest Single-Days Chart, it'll be the overall sixth biggest Monday behind: Demon Slayer's third Monday (holiday boost), Demon Slayer's first Monday, Toy Story 4's first Monday (holiday), Frozen's eighth Monday (holiday), and Evangelion 3.0+1.0's first Monday (opening day).

So excluding holidays, and Evangelion's OD, it'd be the second biggest non-holiday/OD Monday.

I might do a Daily Tracker for One Piece (like I did DS and JJK0). I'll wait to see what Tuesday looks like before deciding. There's a chance the weekend spillover pushed Monday really high, so I'd like to see another day before seeing if we may have a juggernaut on our hands beyond the OW.

I have to say, immediately doing a giveaway plus the stage greeting is quite smart of them. Normally this weekend should be quite deflated, but thanks to those it will probably hold well enough.

Any word on Super Hero?

And is it likely to get an increase at all next weekend for Obon Festival?

Not yet, but I think it's back in the Top 10 (10th) after falling to 11th last weekend. It ranked 10th in admissions last weekend and this weekend, but it likely held better overall than Thor 4 and Quintessential Quintuplets (this had a giveaway or something last week) and managed to slip past both of them to rise from 11th to 10th in revenue.

I'll have the Weekend Actuals up when they're available in a few hours.

And yeah, as long as it doesn't suffer some massive screen/showing cuts, Obon Festival will boost it and probably give it a weekly increase (as it should most films).

>One Piece Film Red delivers the shot of energy the box-office has been needing for the past couple of months, and in doing so, achieved the 2nd Biggest Opening Weekend of All-Time (Revenue & Admissions) in the process! By selling an unbelievable 1,579,522 over the weekend across 495 screens, it also become only the second film in history to sell over 1.5 million tickets on OW. Seating data was a bit complicated over the weekend, but estimates suggest is sold around 70% of all its seats.

From here, even the worst legs in the franchise will get it to the uber-blockbuster of ¥10 billion. I dislike calling this milestone a "lock", but with an OW on this scale, it nearly is, especially since it's showing signs already (very strong Monday, giveaway and stage greetings in its second weekend) that it probably won't be overly frontloaded. I won't predict any higher for the time being, but I also wouldn't be surprised if the outlook goes up after next week.

Here is a list of Records & Accomplishments:

-2nd Biggest OD Ever (Revenue and Admissions).
-2nd Biggest OW Ever (Revenue and Admissions).
-Second Film to sell over 1.5 Million Admissions on OW.
-Fifth Film to earn over ¥2 Billion on OW, and only the second without previews included.
-Third Film to earn over ¥1 Billion in One Day.
-Second Film to earn over ¥1 Billion on Two Days.
-Third Film to sell 800,000+ Admissions in One Day.
-Second Biggest Opening Saturday (Revenue and Admissions).
-Second Biggest Opening Sunday (Revenue and Admissions).
-2nd Biggest OW for an Animated Film (Revenue and Admissions).
-New August OW Record (Revenue and Admissions) by 142% / 130% (r / a).
-New Franchise OW Record (Revenue and Admissions) by 64% / 39% (r / a).
-New Toei OW Record (Revenue and Admissions) by 64% / 39% (r / a).

>Jurassic World: Dominion took a hefty seating/showtime hit with One Piece opening, and its second weekend reflects this. Pretty poor hold, indeed. We'll see how far Obon Festival takes it, but I believe its chances at ¥7 billion are already over. I'd expect a finish around ¥6-6.5 billion ($45-50 million) now, for a 20-25% decline from its predecessor.

>Minions 2 held well again, as expected being pretty much the only family/kid / younger-skewing films over Summer Vacation since Lightyear bombed horrifically. It should do extremely well over Obon Festival, and likely exceed ¥4 billion even if it doesn't look like it judging by its current weekend gross / total. ¥5 billion is doubtful, but I wouldn't completely rule it out until we see the post-Obon total first. Kids' movies do very well over the holiday period.

>Kingdom II continues to post just average, or slightly worse than average, holds. Looking at it... I'd think ¥5 billion was in question. However, it has a major giveaway beginning on August 11th (1 million copies of a 48-page manga), just in time for Obon Festival, so that'll surely give it the boost needed to reach the blockbuster milestone... I think. It's unclear if it'll be able to match/outgross its predecessor's ¥5.73 billion though.

>Top Gun: Maverick is still holding ever strong, achieving an eleventh weekend in the Top 5. It's well on track to exceed ¥11 billion, and with Obon Festival just days away (and another giveaway event), this one could even find its way up to ¥12 billion (~$90 million). Incredible performance since day one, and still has quite a bit to go.

>Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero resurfaces in the Top 10 after the two Disney releases collapsed further. Its run is drawing to a close, but with Obon Festival ahead, it'll get a final bump to exceed ¥2.5 billion and probably 1.8 million admissions.

And special note: While the bottom half of the Top 10 is very weak right now, unfortunately, but despite that, due to the strength of One Piece, this weekend (08/06-07/22) became the 4th Biggest Aggregated Weekend (Top 10) in history!

Looks really good. Tuesday will be its weakest day all week, and at its current pace, could be on track for ~300,000 admissions+ / ~¥425 million+. That'll be a low day any film would gladly take.

That also means Monday + Tuesday may combine for ¥1 billion+ or be just shy.

Also, some of the younger skewing films are having excellent holds (even increases) today, meaning the initial impact of Obon Festival is likely being seen. If those hold for the rest of the day, then Wednesday could be the first day we see a noticeable impact across the board.

And hope Belle does well in China, Kanroji!

I think tue shows that monday had a bit of spillover (being down 21% from mon when the rest of the top10 is basically even, which mostly makes sense seeing as aeon monday is currently a non factor), but still an excellent day regardless.
