With the current covid situation and cinema capacity restriction in US, hope the movie can get ~10M

Demon Slayer will therefore be #1 again on the weekend of 03/27 and the weekend of 04/04. These two weekends it will surely surpass the old records of Your name, right ?

Heavens Feel 3 will have a re-release on March 22. I guess this will get it to 2 billion.

Yeah. It'll take the biggest 24th and 25th weekend records. Not sure about 26 and 27 on though, since it'll likely see a massive drop-off not long after.

Think KnY has any records that it can break in the Blu Ray side of things?
If so, then KnY rewrote a lot of the history... D*mn...

I posted a little while ago about what it has to overcome if it wants to break home video records: viewtopic.php?p=2277181#p2277181

In short, while it's not impossible (hard to say anything is impossible for Kimetsu at this point!) it's nonetheless going to be more of an uphill climb than any other record it's broken thus far. Now that we have the home video solicitation, we can take a look at that and see what if anything that tells us:

Price
¥3,850 RE DVD / ¥4,400 RE BD
¥8,800 LE DVD / ¥9,900 LE BD

For TV series, the "Regular" editions aren't regular. They usually either don't exist at all, or sell so little that they never even rank, with all sales being the ironically named "Limited" edition, which is almost never limited. But with films, regular editions can make up a sizable portion of sales, so they actually matter here.

They did go with budget pricing on the REs, which actually could help a lot in driving more casual sales. Normally, anime DVD/BDs are seen as (and priced as) luxury goods for hardcore fans only, not something normal fans ever consider. But that the RE ought to convince more people to jump on it. This is a net positive for its chances.

Bonuses
• Artbox
• Audio commentary
• Booklet
• Bonus CD: Music Collection (劇伴音楽集 - not a full OST I guess?)
• Bonus DVD: Collection of previously aired promotional segments/live event digest
• Preorders from specific retailers get you a lottery ticket to attend one of five special screenings of the film, each of which will have one seiyuu in attendance

All of these are standard extras I'd expect to see on any decently major film LE release. I don't know if the 劇伴音楽集 is a full OST or not; if it is, that could help boost sales, if it's exclusive to the DVD/BD. I figure they'd make a lot more money just selling an OST separately, though.

What I don't see is 1) new exclusive print material, e.g. a manga or novel with new stories or 2) lottery ticket for a chance to attend a massive live event (the 5 screenings are minor events) or 3) brand new scenes not seen in the theatrical cut or 4) codes for special perks in a popular mobile game. Last I heard there was supposed to be a Kimetsu mobage, but it's been indefinitely delayed.

Any of those four could have a pretty big effect on inflating sales, moreso than anything that's been announced thus far. Although if we're talking about literal record breaking, it needs millions of discs, so even things like mobile game codes or event tickets probably wouldn't be adequate anyway. An exclusive manga probably would be its best shot. However, the release is still months away and there's time for release specs to change.

There's also retailer-exclusive bonuses, but they're your usual array of clear files, playing cards, posters, acrylic stands, tapestries, pins, towels, and other merch that are less likely to increase overall sales than to influence which retailer you shop at if you were already going to buy it anyway.

-

Overall after seeing this my opinion is about where it was: Nothing is outright impossible for Kimetsu (especially if they market the DVD/BDs perfectly) but there's a huge range of plausible outcomes for its home video release. Many of those outcomes are for sales to be extremely good relative to the current physical media market, but not necessarily "record breaking".

Corpse I have a question. Take an example, Avengers Endgame. The number of admissions of avengers endgame in Japan is 4.15M, is this an official figure provided by disney or an estimate close to reality ? I ask the question because for example for Demon Slayer it is the distributor who directly indicates the number of cumulative admissions each week on twitter.

There seems to be also a third edition at ¥12,870/¥11,770. This is the ufotable one, but other storefronts have it as well. https://ufotablewebshop.shop-pro.jp/?pid=158141467

Looking at Amazon the cheapest version seems to be ¥3,389/¥2,965 with no benefits.

Edit: Actually the prices are different when logged out. So I don't know how those work.

The majority of wide (or nearly wide) releases, especially if they earn over ¥1 billion, are tracked and reported (both revenue and admissions) on by the local media trade paper Bunka Tsushin until they either enter very limited release or leave theaters entirely. So their figures typically end up being a full 99% (or more, such as 99.5%) of a film's final gross and admissions.

What I do when Eiren reports the yearly results at the end of January each year, if a film's gross has gone up versus Bunka Tsushin's last reported figures, is take the difference in revenue (always incredibly small) and divide that number by the film's average ticket price at the time of Bunka Tsushin's last reported figures to get the final admissions. For example, if BT stopped tracking a film at ¥4.05 billion / 3.02 million admissions (¥1341 avg. ticket price) and Eiren later reported a final gross of ¥4.07 billion in their yearly report, I'd update that film's admissions to 3.04 million using that same avg. ticket price.

This happens with many films since Bunka Tsushin's generally stops tracking films once they enter very limited release, which I mentioned, but there are usually a few theaters in or around Tokyo that keep them playing once a day for several more weeks or months that very slowly takes the total up another ¥0.01/0.02 billion or so. Rarely is it much higher than the example I used above. You might get one or two films where the difference is up to ¥0.05 billion each year.

And sometimes, especially for bigger films, the studios will report the final figures as well. If you look when I update the Top Grossing Films of the year every week, I'll have [E] listed when a film "ends" its run. The [E] (End of Tracking) represents the last reported total by Bunka Tsushin. But before Eiren releases the final figures in late January, some studios will release final figures in their quarterly repots and such, and if that number is higher than the End of Tracking figure, I'll update it and mark it with [F] (Final Total).

somekindofthing, thanks once again for the detailed posts on the home video release. Very informative. I imagine this particular release is of high interest for you since it's very likely one of the very last releases in the market that has a fair chance of breaking the home video release records.

Continuous decrease is physical media, as well as a rapidly aging and declining population, is about to make most records unattainable, just like at the box office in the unfortunate near-ish future. I get the feeling that this current decade is the last hurrah for just about everything. Thankfully, records, many LONG-standing records, are being broken in the past year or two across various mediums.

Demon Slayer broke all box office and manga (2020 was the biggest year ever for the manga industry, too) records, basically. And Animal Crossing became the top selling video game ever (and the Switch might be able to challenge the DS to take the #1 console record). If Demon Slayer can also break the home video release records, then we just need something to enter the music scene and break those records soon.

Demon Slayer weekdays are huge, and spring break is yet to start!

I think the Evangelion Hype really hit it last week, but now in back to normal.

Oh yeah the super LE exclusives will score them some extra revenue in the first few weeks from the hardcore collectors, but quickly fall behind the other two editions for the more mainstream consumer base.

Yeah, that's the ¥3850/¥4400 MSRP RE after Amazon's standard retailer discount (price can fluctuate slightly but it'll hover around there).

somekindofthing, thanks once again for the detailed posts on the home video release. Very informative. I imagine this particular release is of high interest for you since it's very likely one of the very last releases in the market that has a fair chance of breaking the home video release records.

Yep. I haven't watched Kimetsu and never will, and barely watch anime at all these days (not sure how much longer I'll even be track the stuff tbh), but if one last release can make something unusual happen in a dying market, that's just inherently interesting in and of itself.

>Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time kicks the Spring box-office season off with a record start, setting a NEW March Opening Weekend Record, a record that hasn't been broken in 15-years! What's even more impressive is that due to multiple scheduling delays, it was decided to release the film on March 8th, last Monday, yet it claimed the March OW record and opened 4% higher than its predecessor. This strategy and first seven days couldn't have gone any better.

The final film of the franchise sold a very impressive 760,882 admissions over the weekend frame across 466 screens, and over its first seven-days in release, reached a whopping 2,194,533 admissions. It will begin to slow down, likely sooner rather than later, but the hype surrounding its debut, as well as the finale factor, could result in a higher than expected finish. As it stands, assuming it slows down now, I think the goal (besides outgrossing its predecessor's 5.33 billion to become the #1 film in the franchise) is ¥7 billion (~$65 million) and 4.5 million admissions.

>Brave: Gunjyo Senki enjoyed a fair debut in second place, selling 111,000 admissions over the weekend on 333 screens, and sold 156,687 admissions over its first three-days in release. I don't think this is quite good enough to get it to ¥1 billion ($10 million), but a lucrative Spring Break period could help it get there.

>Loved Like a Flower Bouquet achieved a major milestone this weekend--becoming Tokyo Theater, Co.'s highest grossing film ever! The WOM hit surpassed In This Corner of the World to become the distributor's top grossing film, and is far from finished. It's going to exceed ¥3 billion in just a couple days, and is easily on track to reach ¥3.5 billion (~$33 million) at least. And depending on how it performs over Spring Break, I wouldn't even rule out ¥4 billion (~$38 million) with how incredibly well it's been performing since day one.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train slipped to fourth place after reclaiming the #1 spot in its 21st weekend last week, dropping a pretty heavy 47%, largely from the loss of its 4DX showings. The drop was closer to 35% in admissions though, clearly an indication audiences haven't had enough of this one just yet. And Aniplex/ufotable are responding once again to the demand, having just announced two more giveaway events (on March 27th and April 3rd) to thank moviegoers. Also, fans will get to reexperience the film once again if they choose at Dolby Cinema locations when it opens there on March 27th as well. This is usually the time when even the leggiest of films begin to exit the stage, but Demon Slayer is far from finished.

>Detective Conan: The Scarlet Alibi broke the ¥1 billion milestone over its fifth-weekend of release, becoming the first compilation film to ever accomplish this feat. Expect big, big things when the next film, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet, opens next month (spoiler: Evangelion won't hold the biggest OW of 2021 for long).

>Raya and the Last Dragon held decently, but if it was going to recuperate from its awful opening weekend, it needed to do much, much better than this. It's likely going to stall out around ¥250 million ($2.5 million). The market is open for Disney to return to the box office proper, without a same-day Disney+ release and higher asking prices to show their films (this weekend is further proof Toho Cinemas and others aren't going to go along with that and will refuse to play them), so hopefully having the title of Biggest Bomb Ever under their banner will make them think twice with their future films.

Crazy numbers for Evangelion. Any idea what the reception is like? I remember you saying the 3rd one was the worst-received in the series.

Also, any idea how many theaters/screens it was playing in? Not sure why BOM stopped including it in their chart, but I always thought it was crazy that they showed Evangelion 3.0 pulling that opening from 223 theaters ($63,442 average)... I don't know if that's actually accurate, though.

Reviews are very good. It's averaging above a 4/5 on various movie sites (Eiga, Yahoo!, etc.). And 4.5/5 is really as high as anything can go, so averaging above a 4 (4.2) is exceptional, really. Definitely appears to be the ideal farewell for the franchise based on its reception at the box office and from critics and fans alike.

And yes, 3.0 got a mixed-reception. Its average reviews were usually between 2.5-3/5 from critics and fans. I'm not too sure why, haven't seen it, but I'm recalling it may have been something with the story. Perhaps one of the biggest factors was with how well-received 2.0 was (which even increased the franchise's popularity/appeal), and how 3.0 just didn't live up to it.

Also yes, 3.0 opened at 223 theaters. That's actually a fair count, even pretty high for a regular "niche" anime series that largely only play well in urban prefectures. But of course Evangelion wasn't as niche as it was years before, and had gained a lot of popularity before 3.0 opened, especially after the release of 2.0, so releasing it in more theaters located in rural prefectures to get the theater count close to/above 300 probably would have been the smarter decision.

Khara partnered up with Toei and Toho to give the final film an optimal release. It's playing at 347 theaters (350-380 is typically optimal, so pretty close there) across 466 screens. Below is the general theater count key:

General Theater Count Key:
<100: Limited / 101-149: Wide / 150-199: Below Average / 200-249: Average / 250-299: Above Average / 300-349: Very Wide / >350: Optimal.

400+ is usually impossible, but breaking 400 is actually possible right now as well (Demon Slayer has been above 400 at times (first ever)--and is currently at 390) if a film is getting all (most) IMAX, 4DX, and/or Dolby Cinema theaters since there are little/no Hollywood films opening or not opening as wide as they could be (see: Disney) to split/share them with.

Thanks for the info! I'd actually never gotten around to watching 3.0 (probably in part due to having the perception that it wasn't as well-received) but have rented it to finally watch tonight (will look forward to 4.0 becoming available).

And is that theater count key for anime releases or everything? I notice that for the openings where BOM was still tracking theater count many of the bigger Hollywood releases are listed as 600-900 theaters.

That key is for everything. The 600-900 you see at BOM is the screen count. I'm guessing that Rentrak and any other service that provides the numbers report the screen count over the theater count. The local trade paper from Japan does the same in their weekly report. And since I get the admissions from them, I also use the screen counts in my updates.

Hollywood films tend to have much higher screen counts due having more versions being available versus the average local film. A big Hollywood 3D/IMAX release will need screens for at least 3 or 4 formats per theater where available for example (dub, sub, 3D, IMAX). So a big Hollywood film will get the same 300-350 theaters like a big local film, but the screen count can easily get into the 600-900 screen range in order to accommodate the various versions/formats.

Local films don't really do 3D any more (3D really faded out after just a few years in the market), and don't require dub showings of course, so their screen counts are naturally lower and much closer to the actual theater count.

So, yes, all the films that have done $100 million or $200 million, or in Demon Slayer's case, $300 million on its way to $400 million, have done it from just 300-350 theaters (or less before premium formats like 3D/IMAX) or a little higher. Demon Slayer is the first film I've seen break 400 theaters (got up to 418 at its highest). Before it, 370-385 is as high as anything would get up to. Frozen II, if I remember correctly, played in 382 theaters.

Indeed. Not very surprising, but impressive nonetheless since it's only the second "franchise" film to win Best Animation.

Here is the list for the major categories:

44th Japan Academy Prize Results:

Picture of the Year
--->Midnight Swan
-The Asadas

Though look like this year it'll be Mamoru Hosoda's Belle turn to win, and the next year will be Makoto Shinkai's post-COVID story, and the year after that will be Hayao Miyazaki's final masterpiece.

Probably true. Except I wouldn't bet on Miyazaki's next film to come out by 2023, and probably not 2024 either.

Should be a pretty solid weekend ahead. Not only is Evangelion 3.0+1.0 still posting big numbers (should be just ¥500 million or so shy of becoming the highest film in the franchise already after Sunday!), but all the openers are looking at pretty solid starts based on Friday and Saturday pre-sales.

Also note: Saturday may be bigger than Sunday this weekend since it's Vernal Equinox Day and Movix Cinema Day. When a national holidays lands on a Saturday, it doesn't typically provide too much of a boost, but they can assist with keeping some films from dropping too much if they were looking at a noticeable decline. Similar situation with Movix Cinema Day. They're the third busiest chain, so their discount day (every 20th) provides a small boost to admissions across the board, but any benefit in revenue is generally quite small since it's mostly cancelled out by the discounted tickets. However, with both a national holiday and a chain discount day, I wouldn't be too surprised if a few films take particular advantage and have stronger than expected Saturdays.
