Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Evangelion's 1st WKND; Sat. Tracking
Oh, and we'll need to wait to see what happens on Sunday, and probably for weekend actuals on Monday as well since it'll likely be close, but it might set a new March Opening Weekend Record after all despite, again, opening on a Monday and having five days under its belt already.

The first Narnia has held the March OW record for 15-years now, so it'll be nice to finally see that broken.

21. ¥546.3 million ($4.9 million) / 421,921 [588] - Sing (2017)
22. ¥516.1 million ($5.1 million) / 462,283 [344] - Doraemon: Nobita and the Green Giant Legend (2008)
23. ¥512.0 million ($4.2 million) / 384,000 [339] - Catch Me If You Can (2003)

This prediction is using a 10% drop tomorrow and knocking ~5% off the average ticket price of what most IMAX/4DX releases see since Sunday is Toho Cinemas Day (discounted tickets). However, with this Sunday being a Toho Cinemas Day, it could very well remain flat with Saturday or see a slight bump in admissions. Therefore the prediction I put together *should* be on the safe, conservative end of its range.

I'm pretty confident it'll break ¥1 billion, as a 20% drop or higher on Sunday would be needed for it to miss and that's pretty unlikely. But the March OW record (even though it's not much above that mark) does require a good Sunday result (no higher than a 10% dip to be safe).

And, of course, remember that this film opened this past Monday.

Only its opening day has been released, but I'm estimating around 1.3 million admissions for a gross of ~¥2 billion ($18/19 million) from Monday-Friday. This weekend should get it above 2 million admissions and ~¥3 billion ($27/28 million) for its 7-day total.

THX!
Since weekdays are usually included in the opening weekend numbers, we might have another Japanese movie leading the WW charts...

Looks like Saturday is coming in around $5.5mil - $24.4mil lifetime.

Would that put the opening 7-days closer to $29mil/$30mil assuming a 10% drop?

If that user is using actual figures versus estimated figures, yeah, or if their estimates are close.

Daily numbers aren't reported in Japan unless the distributor releases them though, so it's unlikely any numbers besides its opening day (which was reported) are official right now. Having access to Rentrak could also yield actual figures, but not many have access to them.

I see they're tweeting the Top 5 in Japan each day, and that's never released by anyone, so my guess is they're estimating. Nothing wrong with estimates, of course (that's what we do), just remember that they are estimates and can change when actuals come in. Their estimates look fine to me across the board. I'm estimating ~¥2.6 billion ($23.9 million) as of Saturday, so pretty similar.

¥x13.5 million ($0.1 million), -48%, ¥25.36 billion ($248.5 million) - Frozen (2014)

Biggest 23rd-24th Weekends:
Spoiler: show
Biggest Twenty-Third Weekends (2000-)
¥123.7 million ($1.1 million), -28%, ¥23.83 billion ($226.1 million) - Your Name. (2016)
¥x66.5 million ($0.6 million), -32%, ¥28.70 billion ($236.1 million) - Spirited Away (2001) *est.*
¥x13.5 million ($0.1 million), -54%, ¥12.89 billion ($115.6 million) - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
¥x11.5 million ($0.1 million), -15%, ¥25.41 billion ($249.0 million) - Frozen (2014)

Biggest Twenty-Fourth Weekends (2000-)
¥101.0 million ($0.9 million), -18%, ¥24.04 billion ($227.9 million) - Your Name. (2016)
¥x60.0 million ($0.5 million), -10%, ¥28.85 billion ($237.4 million) - Spirited Away (2001) *est.*

Note: Spirited Away is estimated in Weeks 23-24. Annoyingly no weekend figures are available from Weeks 23-31. It fell outside the top 10 in its 25th week, but resurfaced again in its 32nd week following its Oscar win, and remained there through its 37th week. I estimated its 23rd and 24th weeks based on its weekend ranking (which is available) and any known grosses of the films in the top 10 at that time.

Note 2: Tracking ended for Howl's Moving Castle in its 23rd weekend and for Frozen and Bohemian Rhapsody in their 24th weekends, respectively. Howl would, months later, receive an expansion around June 2005, I believe, to help get it to its final total of ¥19.6 billion. And Bohemian Rhapsody would continue to play in limited released for many, many more months to reach ¥13.11 billion.

A rough drop this weekend, especially in gross since it lost its 4DX showings (which made up the balk of its business in recent months). Although, increasing over the last 3 weekends sort of prepared it for this weekend's drop.

The decline in admissions is going far better, probably looking at a 35% decline or so versus last weekend. It'll probably stabilize again pretty soon, and we have Spring Break in two-weeks that'll give it a nice little bump as well.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Evangelion's 1st WKND; Sat. Results
Begins Sunday a few thousand admissions up over yesterday. Should be looking at 250,000+ once again, but I don't want to call much higher since it'll slow down heavily after 5pm again like yesterday due to Tokyo and neighboring prefectures closing early.

That said, unlike every other film on the list, it doesn't have to be concerned with matching its Saturday evening/night sales (something Sundays rarely can do) since it doesn't have many of them due to restrictions. A sizable lead on Sunday is typically needed around 5-7pm in order for it to beat Saturdays. So just as long as Evangelion is ahead of yesterday come 5/6pm, it should finish the day ahead of yesterday.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Evangelion's 1st WKND; Sat. Results
Turning in. Will update the rest in the morning.

It's still outpacing yesterday (up 7,000) and if it doesn't beat Saturday, it's going to more or less match it or come very close since Sunday evening/night business isn't as weak (in comparison to Sat.) as it typically is now with Tokyo and surrounding prefectures still closing early.

So:

-New March OW Record is very likely. It hasn't been broken in 15-years, so major accomplishment there.
-Exceeding ¥3 billion for its first seven days is very likely, becoming one of the ten fastest films to ever reach that milestone.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Evangelion's 1st WKND; Sat. Results
Yeah, it finished below Saturday. Not unusual or anything, just that Toho Cinemas Day was an opportunity to best Saturday. And still managed a sub-10% decline though (~8%), which is what it needed on paper to open above ¥1 billion, claim the March OW record, and exceed ¥3 billion as of Sunday.

Now, these milestones aren't 100% guaranteed. We only have data from its opening day to determine how it's doing in rural prefectures and what its average ticket price could be, so there is a little room for error either high or low. But it's very likely that it achieved all three goals.

I'll have the Hourly Tracker updated in a minute, followed by final update and charts over the next couple of hours.

Very likely took the March OW record, finally ending Narnia's 15-year hold on it (though Narnia will keep the admissions record). There IS a scenario, though unlikely, where it could fall just short (like ¥1.02 billion), so leave a little room for it to come in second.

I'm estimating Evangelion's 7-day total (Mon.-Sun.) at ¥3.1 billion ($28/29 million) with 2.06 million admissions.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Evangelion's 1st WKND; New March OW Re
Also big for IMAX this session was Japanese anime Shin Evangelion which set a new opening day record for the format in Japan last Monday. Across the first seven days, the franchise-ending film grossed $3.4M to place as the 2nd highest IMAX opening week for a local title in the market, behind the recent Demon Slayer.
