Are you asking about Slam Dunk this weekend? If so, it was the fourth biggest 20th weekend ever.

I'll have that chart (and all the other biggest weekend charts before that for Slam Dunk and Suzume), the 2022 charts, and some others updated throughout the week.

Tough one. If we go off past live-action Disney remakes, it would probably do very well and be a ¥10 billion contender. Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin both grossed ¥12 billion, Alice in Wonderland almost grossed ¥12 billion, and Japan was either Maleficent's best or second best international market. Only The Lion King was a slight disappointment versus its numbers worldwide (still a success though), which I think can be linked to Japanese audiences generally not liking talking animals as main or primary characters as much in animated movies.

However, Disney has basically collapsed theatrically in Japan. All their films have bombed or disappointed since 2019. (And no, not because of all the nonsense drama that is going on in the U.S.; I don't think Japan and most of the world cares about all that.)

It's primarily due to Disney+ killing the desire to go see their films in theaters. Japan is one of the most backloaded markets in the world, maybe the most backloaded among major markets, and audiences are perfectly fine waiting a couple/few months to catch their films on Disney+. And it definitely didn't help that Disney was stubborn in avoiding theaters in 2020/2021, which resulted in many Japanese theaters (50-60%, I believe) boycotting the films Disney did begin to release theatrically due to also releasing on Disney+ either upon release or within 2 months of their release dates.

So, Disney lost a lot of favor with Japanese theater chains, something other Hollywood studios didn't have to concern themselves with since they had already sold distributor rights to local distributor Toho years ago (and Toho doesn't release Universal and Paramount films on streaming until they play out of theaters naturally), and Warner Bros. has its own Japanese studio that handles their films (and HBO Max isn't available in Japan).

Sooo... I'd bet against The Little Mermaid bucking Disney's performance in Japan (still down 80/90% versus the average year before 2020) if Avatar 2 couldn't even do it.

Corpse, I did provide 2-Days WeeKend Number but why are you uploading 3-Days WeeKend Number on 2-Days Weekend Chart. I am so confused ??

Okay, if there isn't any Breakdown you can simply add 3-Days Weekend Number to that chart. But, when we have, then?

Apparently the First Slam Dunk has even higher opening day in China than Suzume, and considering that the First Slam Dunk open in Thursday while Suzume open in Friday, it's gonna break record for sure.

But I already expect this, what I'm more interest in how it'll performance in USA, which is the land that give birth to basketball.

I noticed that TOHO Namba went out early on PS for Mario, so I took a look around and found like...2 theaters out of 20 I checked that had it up? There are probably a few spread out, but I don't have a script to crawl through them, and I sure as hell am not bothering to do it manually, so take what you get.

It's a very limited amount of screens right now, mind you (even with conan blowing up and sharing screens, there's no way a big location like Namba would only give it ~1000 seats a day, especially since tokyo revengers 2 did poorly), and mostly the small screens. There's no way to tell how much "added" demand these specific theaters are getting with being basically the only theaters in their areas opening up presales early, buuuut...

Presales look good! Definitely, I'd say. Much moreso for saturday than friday, so expecting a good bump there. How good...friday doesn't look monstrous by any means, more like decent-good, but saturday is close to seeing a lot of sellouts, and while it's not a ton of tickets, you can't sell the screens you don't have, I guess. Could be a testing ground to see if there's any worth in taking big screens away from Conan ahead of GW. So the film bombing is a definite "no" to me, which is good. Won't go out and say anything more than that at the moment, just because there really are so few locations that have it out, and they only put out one small-medium screen for it. There just isn't the sample size to go any deeper atm.

A few screens on the...very few locations I was able to find that opened (blue means <50% sold, yellow is >50%, and red is...>80%? could be over 70, honestly, don't exactly remember, while greyed out means sold-out, not that it has any yet).

Namba (only gave it the mid-size 181 screen at the moment)

Spoiler: show
Friday

Image

Saturday

Image

Nijo (pretty small location, has it on a small 68 seats screen)

Spoiler: show
Friday

Saturday

Wouldn't normally bother looking through these, but people are very curious, so have some tidbits, I guess.

Thanks, that's very good, this movie will definitely be a hit and break the tradition of western adaptations of local IPs doing poorly in Japan.

Been about 2 hours for TOHO/6 hours for movix theaters. Not impressed by the initial burst. No queue on any chain and no big sales for friday for the first few hours. Maybe it picks up later in the day with kids and stuff but eh. Saturday should be better. Also all the mario PLFs are 3D for some reason. Seems like a bad choice to me.

Before I get so far behind with the updates where it's just annoying/frustrating (already will be having to convert numbers from the past like 7 weeks...), I'm going to dedicate a few hours today to getting all that done.

And yeah, I'd say Super Mario debuted to around ¥300 million ($2.2/2.3 million) or a little more today. It's a solid start, keeps it well above bomb/disappointment territory, but it also doesn't scream big breakout right now (but with Japan, gotta wait and see more numbers before ruling things out). Like, I certainly wouldn't be predicting anything near ¥10 billion off this number alone. Feels more like a ¥5 billion+ number right now.

Its full first week is Golden Week, too, so the numbers are going to be boosted for a while too and could be misleading. But since it's GW, its numbers should be pretty high basically every day. Friday should be one of its lower days until next weekend.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Charts (Finally) Being Updated
Some notable achievements/records (excluding Detective Conan since we went over those last week, but its second weekend/total (second biggest 2nd weekend ever) is also very high and I'll have those charts up later) that have occurred in the past seven weeks:

-Suzume overtook Weathering With You several weeks back.

-The First Slam Dunk has been in the Top 5 for a staggering 20 of its 21 weeks now, slipping to 6th place on the last weekend of March, but has been back in ever since.

-Shin Kamen Rider is the highest grossing film of all-time in the 60+ film strong Kamen Rider franchise.

-Doraemon: Nobita's Sky Utopia is the first Doraemon film since 2019 to exceed ¥4 billion.

-Top Gun: Maverick rose to a tie with The Last Samurai to become Tom Cruise's highest grossing film in Japan.

I had a look at saturday PS earlier today and it felt a lot better than its friday PS to me. I think weekend will end up being a lot better than one would think off 300M OD. Hoping for 300-550-600 wknd. I do agree people are being too hasty in saying 10b is a lock n stuff though.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Charts (Finally) Being Updated
That'd be a great 3-day result. There are 4 national holidays starting with Saturday this week, schools are out, etc., so the numbers are going to be high than normal for its first 7-10 days in release.

It's important to keep in mind it's opening over one of the three major holiday periods of the year before trying to project a possible finish from that since it's going to add some degree of frontloading.

Golden Week 2023

Sat.: April 29th (Showa Day-National Holiday)
Sun.: April 30th
Mon.: May 1st (Discount Day, Aeon Cinemas Day)
Tues.: May 2nd (Pseudo-Holiday before a National Holiday)
Wed.: May 3rd (Constitution Day-National Holiday, Toho Cinemas Day)
Thur.: May 4th (Greenery Day-National Holiday)
Fri.: May 5th (Children's Day-National Holiday)

And Sat/Sun next week will also be a little stronger than normal since the last weekend of a major holiday period is usually boosted from people going to the theaters before going back to school/work again.

Sunday (Apr. 30th) *might* be the weakest day since it's between Showa Day and a discount day. It's still going to be a bit stronger than normal since there's no school on Monday of course, just relative speaking compared to the other days of the week this year. If not it, then Tuesday.
