Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Back! Updates To Come
Back! As you guys have discussed, looks like Aeon Cinemas wasn't accounted for in the weekend numbers (and a couple days prior to that), which makes putting together estimates very difficult and more like guess work. That said... looks like Kingdom 2 and Minions 2 both did really well. If I had to guess... it looks like Kingdom 2 may have outopened its predecessor (very impressive feat), and Minions 2 roughly matched its predecessor (also very impressive as younger skewing films have struggled the past 2 years).

Monday is a holiday, so numbers will be delayed until Tuesday.

I'll have last weekend's actuals posted sometime tomorrow, followed by some updates. I'll probably just wait to update the 2022 charts until ~Tuesday/Wednesday though since updating it tomorrow and then again a day or two later is silly.

And, to answer Algren's question on the last page: Sonic the Hedgehog was likely to disappoint under normal circumstances I feel due to Japanese audiences generally dismissing Western adaptations of local products, especially since (I think, haven't seen the film myself) there's a lot of Western-style humor present in the film which often fails to translate well in Japan (and probably other Asian markets).

On top of that, yeah, COVID likely impacted it further. Younger-skewing films were hit the hardest by it due to 1.) Families just being more cautious, and 2.) It opened when theaters had capacity restrictions, which theaters in Japan put in place with a checkerboard system. This means that no one could sit side-by-side or front-to-back, which made it difficult to take younger children.

I expect Sonic 2 to do better, maybe even "drastically" better given the original's performance, but I wouldn't expect much still. I'd be pretty surprised it if got to (or near) ¥1 billion, for example.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Back! Updates To Come
Just noticed the Yen is at a freakin' 24-year low versus the Dollar now.

Currently, ¥1 billion is barely above $7 million. ¥7 billion is required for $50 million, and likewise, ¥14 billion is required to reach $100 million. So, unless something extreme happens, I wouldn't expect a $100 million earner in some time from the market. Very shocking rates.

It *shouldn't* (...) go lower than the summer of 1998, but if it does, it'll be the lowest it's been since 1990 (32 years ago). I can't even imagine how long it's going to take to crawl out of this. I don't think Japan itself can really do much, so it'll take a major recession in the US, I believe, now.

If anyone was ever hoping to visit Japan, now is the absolute best time. $1,000 will get you nearly ¥139,000, which is a lot of money ($1,080 would get you 3 PS5s, for example). Prices in Japan have barely gone up since the early/mid-90s in Japan. You can get a nice hotel in Tokyo for like $50 a night now.

10 (08) ¥x40,005,430 ($294,000), -37%, ¥250,538,170 ($1.8 million), Anpanman: Dororin and the Transforming Carnival (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) WK3

NOTE: These are the actuals for JULY 09-10! July 16-17 will be released tomorrow/Wednesday due to the holidays.

>Pretty impressive opening weekend for Thor: Love and Thunder, coming in 68% above its predecessor and delivering to Disney their best opening weekend in Japan since 2019. The fourth entry in the series sold 237,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 853 screens, and 359,000 admissions over its three-day opening. It'll be pretty frontloaded, as nearly every Marvel/DC film is, so ¥2 billion will be the goal.

>Top Gun: Maverick enjoyed an excellent seventh weekend hold (admissions up to 5,358,728 as of this weekend above), and with this, has made reaching the ¥10 billion milestone 99+% likely. It does look like it dropped over 30% this past weekend, and it'll continue to lose screen/showings as the new releases are relentless this time of year, but I think it broke ¥9 billion yesterday (7/18), so even if it does see ~30% drops from hereon, it'll get above ¥10 billion rather comfortably. I think we can bump the goal up to ¥11 billion now.

>Lightyear dropped hard in its second weekend, and I think we can rule out ¥2 billion after this. ¥2 billion was already half of the normal goal of a Pixar film, but likely failing to even get to that mark now is pretty disastrous. A Pixar film potentially grossing less than a Marvel film (Thor 4) in Japan is almost unheard of outside of a handful of films (OT Spider-Man, Avengers: Endgame).

>My Boyfriend in Orange debuted to 125,000 admissions over the weekend on 223 screens, and 180,000 over its three-day opening. Nothing very exciting here, but it is decent enough and might give Shochiku, already enjoying a strong 2022, another ¥1 billion earner for the year.

>Shin Ultraman's admissions are up to 2,850,071 (as of July 10th) for gman to continue tracking.

I think I'll end last weekend's analysis there. I normally update the 2022 Yearly Chart (OW and Totals) after the weekend actuals, but I'm going to hold off until the numbers for this past weekend (07/16-17) come in tomorrow (delayed due to the holidays).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Back! Updates To Come
Would mean almost ¥1.5 billion (four-day) / ~¥1.1 billion (three-day) / ~¥750 million (OW) for Kingdom II if close to the actual.

¥5 billion was likely for it since its predecessor earned ¥5.73 billion, but an opening on this scale would suggest potential at ¥7 billion this time of year. Not many Japanese live-action sequels tend to gross more than the original, with many declining or remaining stable, so such a large increase would be very, very impressive if it happens.

Depending on how Jurassic World: Dominion (7/29) and One Piece Film Red (8/6) perform, it might be in contention to win the Summer 2022 crown.

Production budget is atleast 7x more than "Ordinary" Japanese Film.

My guess gives me ¥700M, but if a bit of optimistic tolerance then I guess it's a solid ¥1.0B Budget for Kingdom 2. Well, largely depends on the fact on what type of "Ordinary" film budget is he talking about

Let's go ¥8.0B...... via Daily Japan (https://www.daily.co.jp/gossip/2022/07/ ... 3111.shtml)

Not yet (or that I've seen), but expect an update on it (and everything else) in the next ~5-8 hours or so.

Thanks for sharing the Top Gun (much better hold than estimated) and Minions 2 (impressive stability) numbers, Kanroji. Here are Kingdom II's:

Opening Weekend: ¥797,000,000 / 527,000
4-Day Opening (Fri.-Mon.): ¥1.379 billion / 934,000

Very strong. 50% stronger over the weekend than its predecessor. I want to see how it performs before making any final projections, but ¥7 billion is probably *likely*, but maybe it can go a bit higher.

The fact that TG got hit so hard on screens (even premium) this week but still held this well is extremely remarkable, I think that makes even 11 billion pretty likely since this was probably the hardest it was going to get hit the rest of summer other than JWD next week.

Yeah, ¥11 billion looks doable. It'll become the 40th film to reach ¥10 billion around the end of the month, and among those 40 films, it'll be one of just five or six (need to double check again) to get to uber-blockbuster status *without* having one of the major holiday periods in its first 60 days in release.

I'm going to do things in reverse this week and update the 2022 OW and Totals Charts (as of Monday, July 18th) before the weekend actuals, so those will be updated and posted probably in the next hour.
