Was about to ask what was going on with monday until I realised blogger had a warning about how the seats acquisition would be messed up for a while due to restrictions lol.

Spiderman's drop is pretty disappointing considering its opening, hopefully legs will be better going forward.

What happened it drops from 79K to below 30K after 19:22 JST update. Anything wrong?

It was probably counting locked seats as sold seats, blogger warned about it. The numbers before made no sense, they were way too high.

Today's drop looks disappointing but it's still 3-way. What will happen this WK? I hope Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 continue to hold WK numbers and pass ¥10B by the end of this month.

Pretty good day, really. Not too far below this past Friday. It's just bit drops versus last Monday because last Monday was a holiday.

And yes. When theaters (Aeon now) limit capacity by marking off available seats, those seats will be counted as sold by the system until it's updated (which they were by thr end of the day).

This will probably be happening a lot for the next several weeks as more theaters will likely put some restrictions in place.

All the weekend actuals are taking a bit longer to be released today, so I'm going to go ahead and update the 2021/2022 charts since all the totals have been released already. (Will give me far less to do when the weekend figures come out.)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top Grossing Films 2021
Just waiting for Arashi and Baton to wrap up. Baton barely added anything this past week, so I suspect this was its last update. Arashi, however, might play a bit longer (say, another month), so it'll likely be the only 2021 film that is still playing when Eiren releases their 2021 yearly data in 2 weeks. It'll likely crawl past Rurouni Kenshin to crack the Top 5 of 2021.

A reminder to anyone who hasn't been around during the past quasi-SOAs, the main restriction is for businesses, mostly restaurants and establishments that serve alcohol, to close early, usually at 8/9pm. During the last two SOAs (last Spring and Summer), theaters in the affected prefectures agreed to the measures and closed at 8/9pm too (in exchange for Government compensation for loss of business), so we can likely expect that to be the case again starting on Friday.

It's not a huge hinderance, mostly just impacting films that do better in the evenings/nights, but it will put a bit of a cap on daily numbers for the next ~5-6 weeks since Tokyo and the other affected 15 prefectures are over 80/85% of the box-office.

And yes. As Jack says, legs have been very strong in the past while restrictions are in place.

1. They put a cap on daily business, so business is spread out over the long term.
2. They impact other entertainment facilities more (that rely more on evening/night buisness), so theaters typically benefit from some casual/non-moviegoers seeking them out for alt. entertainment.

Japan Academy Prize announced its nominees
https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/ ... f-the-year

Omitting from the translated news is the fact that Belle is also nominated in Best Original Score, the only anime in this category in this year. Hinting that it might just win Best Animation award. Also, Mamoro Hosoda wins every time, since the Girl who Leapt throught Time, which is the first year that has Best Animation award.

For big award like Best Picture, Acting, Screenplay, Directing, I'm wondering if this award will favor Oscar's favorite like Drive My Car, this film is very quiet in its own country.

Well, Drive My Car was released by a small independent distributor (Bitter End), so it's no surprise it didn't perform very well at the box-office back in August before all the attention it received this award season.

It's very hard for films that aren't released by Toho (and Toho-Towa), Shochiku, Toei, and Kadokawa to succeed at the box-office. These four cornerstone distributors also operate their own theater chains (accounting for ~50/55% or so of all theaters nationwide), so films released by them have a theatrical advantage over everyone else.

This is why you see smaller, and independent distributors (Asmik Ace, Aniplex, Gaga, and many others) sometimes pairing up with one of the main four for their most notable releases that require a wider release they can't give on their own. But it doesn't make financial sense sometimes (for very small films) when they have to give up more than their fair share to the main four distributors if they partner up. Say, for example, one of them pairs with Toho. Toho gets 50% of the distributor share AND the 50% theatrical share from their own theaters (the busiest chain in the country). Partnering with Toho is the easiest way to get your film in many theaters (the busiest theaters), but they're also the one partner that'll take most of the profits away from you in the exchange. This can *work* if said film does well enough at the box-office, but if they don't, a smaller distributor could end up losing more money in some cases as they're giving up far too much of the earnings.

If it ends up winning Best Picture at the Japan Academy Prize, and then win the Best Picture and/or Best Foreign Language Award at the Oscars two weeks later, theaters will give it a proper release (it has been expanded to 32 theaters in recent weeks/months) afterwards where it'll bring in significant numbers at the box-office.

Was House of Gucci released this weekend?

I imagine it wouldn't do much here, but curious if any numbers were reported yet.

Yep! It did alright, I think, 5th place debut. The weekend frame (Sat/Sun) hasn't been released yet, but its 3-day total (Fri-Sun.) was ¥112,246,060 ($980,000) on 79,251 admissions across 312 screens. Not great, of course, but fair enough. Might get around ¥500 million ($4/4.5 million) or so. Is it an award contender this season? If it can score some notable nods/wins, then up that projection a little bit (or a good bit if Oscars are involved).

Cry Macho also debuted this weekend (6th place) to ¥62,505,780 ($546,000) on 47,912 admissions across 266 screens in its first 3-days. Lower-end for Eastwood, but still being able to pull a debut like this for such an off-the-radar film is still testament to his star-power in the market. May reach around ¥250/300 million (~$2.5 million), far and away its best international market total.

It should be a contender for Gaga in Actress, but may slip in Leto in BSA and Best Picture as well (probably depends on PGA nod for the latter).

Then if all goes well with the nominations, but especially if it can pick up some big wins, then it'll be one to watch later in its run.

Most of you probably know and have seen this already (a bit late reporting it!), but below is the second giveaway (poster of the third key visual) for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 that will be handed out starting this weekend (01/22, start of its 5th week) through February 4th to the first 500,000 moviegoers.

Spoiler: show

And as Kanroji shared earlier this week, a third and fourth giveaway has always been announced, with the third being handed out between 02/04-18 (start of its 7th week), and the fourth from 02/19-TBD (start of its 9th week). The third and fourth giveaway items haven't been unveiled yet (nor have how many will be available).

So, starting this Saturday, it's going to have a giveaway event occurring until at least the end of February.

I hate Leaker's Update but thank you for sharing. BTW, how long do you expect this work to run. Can it run until Golden Week?
