I am not sure why I am saying this but if Avatar 2 can not gross more than 2x of Top Gun Maverick (assuming ¥13.5B closing) i.e. ¥27B then Avatar 2 should not release in Japan at all.. because at 1st, USD Total will be hellish depressing and I just do not want to see it falling behind Avatar (2009) Total at least in USD to call it a victory...

My inner sense says that IMAX/4DX/MX4D will have a historically the biggest share in Weekend box office!! How should we forecast for weekend since Premium format will heavily dominate!!

I'm always one to say "never say never", but... that'd be one of the biggest surprises ever.

And it is likely to have a substantial premium format share, and thus a very high avg. ticket price, perhaps one of the highest (if not the highest) on record for a standard wide release but it can only help so much. Top Gun: Maverick has one of the highest avg. ticket prices for a non-specialty release at a whopping ¥1615. Avatar 2 can beat that, and I'd expect it to, but I don't know how much higher it can really go. ~¥1700 is probably around the ceiling I feel.

It still needs to sell a ton of tickets and can't rely much on higher tickets. The first Avatar had an avg. ticket price of ¥1513, which is still higher than the vast majority of films today. So... Avatar 2 can't make up much ground on that front, and it still comes down to Avatar 2 needing to sell a lot more tickets than the original since the avg. ticket price isn't likely be to *that* much higher.

It'd have to sell almost 16 million admissions, 54% more than the original, if we use ~¥1700 as a rough avg. ticket price in order to reach ¥27 billion.

And there's the precedent of sequels and/or follow-ups to major films often decreasing from their high-ranking (think top 10 all time films) predecessors. Harry Potter 2, Howl's Moving Castle, Frozen II, Weathering With You, and even Avatar itself all saw drops (some big drops) from their predecessors. The only follow-up (among the top tier films) to not fall into this category was when Spirited Away increased over Princess Mononoke.

That doesn't guarantee Avatar 2 will also decline, and the first dropping almost 45% compared to Titanic could have been that moment instead, but it's a trend that is rarely bucked in Japan. Original films are far more likely to put up all-time grosses/admissions than sequels are.

Thursday was down a lot compared to that insane (record) Wednesday, but Friday recovered enough to where I think we're still in good shape for a long run.

And Saturday presales are good. Predicting a solid ~20-25% drop for the weekend. It looks to be following the common trend of a better second weekend hold than third weekend hold that a lot films that open between ¥1-1.5 billion and finish between ¥11-15 billion have. And if it does, it's probably a sign we can rule out (at least somewhat soon) of anything well above that range.

Solid Saturday, down around 24% versus last Saturday. If the Sunday increase is similar as last week, we'll be looking at a Sunday around ¥475 million / 340,000 admissions. I'll use this projection to see where its third weekend ranks on the all-time charts in the next post.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Suzume - Daily Tracker Update
A few exceptions aside, most films (especially in the upper-half of the chart above) manage to more than double (2-2.5x) their third week (16/17-day) totals. So, ~¥13 billion is *probably* a safe-ish bet for Suzume, though ¥14/15 billion is certainly very doable.

And while their release dates are quite different, Shinkai's last film (Weathering With You) will probably be the best comparison as they're running reasonably close in numbers and drops so far (with Suzume doing a little better). Weathering multiplied its three week total by 2.4x, which would get Suzume just over ¥15 billion. (Not predicting this yet, just pointing out the most likely trajectory at the moment.)

Of course, there are many cases of films tripling (3x) their three week totals, and even some that more than quadruple (4-5x) their three week totals. I don't see anything really indicating Suzume will join those films, but let's wait and see what it does next week.

Key films to watch in December:

>The First Slam Dunk (Hugely popular manga series, over 170 million copies in circulation. Very long-anticipated film adaptation.)

>Fragments of the Last Will (WWII movies always have potential, and some manage to breakout.)

>Avatar: The Way of Water (The sequel to Avatar finally arrives. Clearly lots of potential based on its predecessor.)

>Dr. Coto's Clinic: The Movie (Don't know much about this other than it being a continuation of the Fuji TV drama from the early/mid-2000s, but movies on TV shows always have potential. But is the ~15-20 year wait too long?)

So even for Avatar which is Disney it has a N/A thing just like there others releases. So basically it seems from now on every Disney release will have an N/A. Speaking of Disney there latest release Strange World is a flop in Japan just like other places and since the 2022 box office is ending it seems to be a terrible year for Disney in Japan. I have a feeling that if this continues in a few years they might have no choice but to give distribution rights to a Japanese distributor.

Disney has had a horrible 3 years. And yeah, Strange World is an epic bomb. It's only going to debut in 7th place this weekend, and will end up as one of their worst performers ever (maybe even their worse?). Estimating it'll earn around ¥35 million ($250,000) this weekend, and maybe just barely finish around ¥150 million ($1.1 million). Pretty sure that'll be an all-time low for Disney.

And yes, I agree they should sell distribution rights to a Japanese distributor (likely to be Toho under one of their subsidiary distributors like Toho-Towa or Towa Pictures). I really don't think they've made any profit (theatrically) in Japan these past 3 years. They have to be losing money. They've performed *that* badly. They're the only Western studio still handling their own films in Japan. (Warner Bros. have their own film studio in Japan.)

*Opening Weekend impacted by the Great Tohoku Earthquake.
**Opening Weekend impacted by theater boycotts of Disney+ releases.

Note (1): Dinosaur's Opening Weekend is a rough estimate based on its #1 weekend ranking in admissions, and reported highest opening weekend for a Walt Disney Animated film at the time, 230% higher than the previous year's Tarzan.
Note (2): No Opening Weekend data for Mulan, but it ranked 2nd in admissions, so it had a decent debut. Impossible to really say how high, but I'd guess around ¥150-200 million or so. It didn't earn ¥1 billion in income revenue in 1998, so its total wouldn't have been more than ~¥1.5 billion or so.
Note (3): No Opening Weekend data for The Emperor's New Groove, but it ranked 8th in admissions, so definitely a poor debut. Almost definitely (considerably) below ¥100 million.
Note (4): No Opening Weekend or Total data for Home on the Range, it missed the Top 10, so it was very low. I'd guess below Winnie the Pooh and possibly even Raya.
Note (5): No Opening Weekend data available for any films before 1998.

TOTALS:
¥25.50 billion ($249.6 million) / 20.03 million - Frozen (2014)
¥13.37 billion ($122.4 million) / 10.45 million - Frozen II (2019)
¥9.18 billion ($77.7 million) / 7.22 million - Big Hero 6 (2014)

¥1.95 billion ($18.4 million) / ~1.60 million - The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
¥1.65 billion ($17.4 million) / 1.25 million - Bolt (2009)

~¥770 million ($6.6 million) / ~610,000 - Encanto (2021)**
~¥615 million ($5.2 million) / ~500,000 - Treasure Planet (2003)
¥481 million ($5.3 million) / ~380,000 - The Princess and the Frog (2010)
~¥340 million ($3.2 million) / ~270,000 - Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)**
~¥325 million ($4.2 million) / ~265,000 - Winnie the Pooh (2011)
~¥150 million ($1.1 million) / ~110,000 - Strange World (2022) *Projection*

*Run impacted by the Great Tohoku Earthquake.
**Run impacted by theater boycotts of Disney+ releases.

Note: No Total data available on any other Walt Disney Animation releases. No missing films released between 1980-1998 earned ¥1 billion+ in distributor income, so none of their totals would be above ¥1.5 billion or so (and likely much less, with the exception of possibly Mulan and Pocahontas, which may have been near there).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: December Release Schedule
Not opening weekends since they're opening day-and-date in Japan now and aren't on Disney+ yet (or will be soon), but day-and-date is usually a bad strategy in Japan. Aside from some unique cases (like a film with a proven built-in base), most day-and-date releases disappoint or bomb in the market. Opening later in Japan is generally better as it allows for better release dates and a better marketing campaign that more directly targets the Japanese.

However, theaters are still dropping Disney releases once they go on Disney+ (or shortly after). Which is also especially harmful in Japan since it's a super-leggy market (leggiest major market, I believe). Sometimes a month in release only accounts for ~50% of the eventual total (sometimes even much less).

It's a lose-lose for them. Open day-and-date and likely disappoint and have a run cut short by theaters dropping them when they go on Disney+... Or not even open since waiting for a better opportunity a few weeks/months later can't work anymore because theaters won't play them if they're available on Disney+ (or will be shortly from their theater release date).

So... neither situation works for them in this particular market, once their biggest (or second) prior to 2020. Their annual earnings are still something like 80-90% below normal in the market, they're not even in the top 5 distributors anymore, and they can barely compete with independent distributors now.

They just have to stop with the streaming and give their films ~3-4 months exclusively in theaters. The MCU films can do fine with ~60 day windows (they're not even getting this though) as they're frontloaded and make most of their money in 2 months. The MCU isn't even very big in Japan anyway, so I don't know if it really matters with them... But everything else really needs a minimum of 90 days exclusivity in theaters. Or they can do it on a case-by-case basis. A film like Avatar 2 or anything that's going to put up a huge gross ideally needs up to 4-6 months in theaters.

Disney is alone in all of this. Every other studio has avoided this since they don't do theatrical windows and don't put their films on streaming until after they've played out in theaters. Warner Bros. Japan handles WB films (and HBO Max isn't available in Japan), Universal and Paramount both sold their distribution rights to Toho who doesn't release them on streaming. And local studios don't do streaming while still in theaters either.

So... Disney either needs to delay putting films on Disney+ in Japan until months after the rest of the world (unlikely), or sell their distribution rights like Universal and Paramount have, I guess.

It is a pleasing number for me. :P Partly because Disney is being stubborn and not adapting to the market, but I also don't like their politics, so I'm glad they're screwing up in Japan. Normally I would support Americana spreading across the globe, but they're just not opening their eyes to the world. It's as if they only value the opinion of Twitter or something. Thankfully, their dogmatic approach is also hurting them domestically.

I love the Slam Dunk manga and glad about its release in Japan. I known it prob will not receive a North American theatrical release but maybe a streaming release from Crunchyroll in North America. I could be wrong but It would surprised if this comes to Western countries like North America.

Just noticed some toho theaters opened PS extra early for slam dunk, not sure when it started but it's already open in some theaters. Looks real good to me (I think Ebina was the only location out of the few I checked where it was meh, everything else was strong to very strong) but it doesn't seem like it's going to open super wide in terms of screens, which makes sense I guess since it has to share with Suzume.

A big opening is almost assured, I think. Probably over ¥1 billion.

I just wonder what legs will be like. I suppose this boils down to the film's reception though.

Sunday was a tad weaker than I expected (off ~31% vs last Sun.), but still good. Gives it a weekend decline around 27/28%, which is very similar to Weathering With You's 29% third weekend decline. So, the holds so far have been almost identical. Weathering was about to enter Obon Festival at this point run though, so Suzume will likely fall behind next week and maybe stay there until New Year. But that is a month out, so it's not guaranteed to outgross Weathering at this stage yet since it'll go into its major holiday period with lower numbers.

~¥13-15 billion (~$92-106 million) is the most likely range I feel.

I think it's going to be really hard for Suzume to match Weathering with You, I'm not convinced new years can make up for the lead it'll get by then if it has to compete with both Slam Dunk and Avatar for screens, especially if it ends up not getting any premium throughout that period.

Its total in Japan hasn't been updated since August. Kanroji might have something on its OS/WW figures.

And thanks for the JJK0 data, Kanroji. I'll add that extra ~10,000 admissions to the total in the next update.
